Wife played today and she said it was ridiculously hot out there, to the point that apparently one of the older guys took a turn due to the heat

Not surprised tbh, did the full 18 but was well and truly cooked by ~15 at the latest. All of us where, I was the old one in the group at 'only' 42, we all drunk plenty but were just done in by that heat.

I think 9 would've been fine tbh, even felt reasonably good through 12/13 but very quickly fell apart after that.

Played 9 after work this evening, my wife was planning to play as well but after spending 4hrs in the car and training people, she decided.just.to walk round with me

Paired up with a guy who was on the first tee waiting on a 4 ball and offered me the option of playing with him as he was only playing 9 as well, so we had a good chat and a relaxed game

Started with a birdie but then followed it up with a double on the second, made a par on 3 and another bogey on 4. A couple of pars got me back on track and a birdie on the 7th got me back to +1 overall

Finished the round with another couple pars which left me thinking what could have been without the double

Hoping to play another 9 on Saturday as I haven't got time for a full round, then a comp off the tips on Sunday (7,100yds)

no comp for me this weekend as there's only the open and i don't know 3 other golfers with hanidcaps.
Went for a lesson yesterday was really good, chap called Andrew Waple over at carus. Wasn't sure what to work on so we hit some shots and he gave me a few bits to work on. One of them is an instant fix which was a standard feet setup as the ball was a little back in the stance causing my body to do some unique things to hit the ball.
Worked a the angle of striking the ball as was hitting down to much (likely why my elbow is achy) and dropping the hands a bit before the turn.
Lastly worked on left arm only chipping to try getting me used to not getting bunched up at the end of the swing and making strike more consistent.

Went out this morning for 18 with my lad and finished a few over my handicap with a good few thinned shots which i was expecting but when i do hit it well its a lot better and the clubs make a nice clicky noise,

Took a couple of days off whilst I hid from this bloomin' heat but had a comp at my local yesterday afternoon where they turned it into a par 3 course for the lols. So all the par 4/5's we were starting half way down the fairway to be a par 3, longest was the 9th at 195 yards. Was quite good fun and interesting, played ok to start with, 2 bogeys to start and then 3 pars but then for 3 holes I just messed it up, 7&8 I lose my first tee ball but made a 5, so 'par with my second ball' so irritating... But good fun at least :)

Today I played Kingsdown in their Mens Open, betterball stableford. I had my handicap cut a bit as it was a max playing handicap of 18 when off the whites my 19 index gives me 22 shots technically but hey. As a team we got 41 points and the leader when we put the cards in was on 43, not terrible really. We had 2 holes were we both double-bogey'd it (my mate was playing off 9 I think), also he had like 3 birdie putts just miss and I had one I left way short at least, oddly my putting pace was the issue today but still think I avoided any 3 putts at least. But yeah, could've come in with several shots more and been in with a chance but good day none the less.

Still warm though. Once the sun came out it was like 28c and felt hot still. Tomorrow is 22 max, maybe even some rain, can't wait! Off to play Stockwood Vale, do enjoy it there so good times :)

Played another 9 today and shot +4 which was 1 over my handicap

My excuse today was trying the new putter that I won recently and left loads of putts short as it has a soft insert rather than the milled face I am used to

Playing tomorrow from the very back tees so my usual putter is back in the bag, but I get a few more shots (5 off the yellow, 7 off the white and 9 off the blues)

Temperature is supposed to be cooler, but I am hoping the wind is not as strong as it was today - on our par 3 7th hole I hit 4i today from about 165yds and was still short of the centre of the green, but tomorrow that same hole is about 40yds longer from the blue tees

Stableford off the yellows yesterday, 31pts playing off 12. Driving was scratchy, irons solid. Putting, just couldn't get anything to drop on the front nine. Felt like everything was bang online but 2ft short, I guess they've had to water the greens so much they were just that bit slower. Blobs on 15 (my fault) and 17 (fly flew across my ball in the middle of my swing) cost me a chance of shooting to my handicap.

Today just a casual knock with some regulars, made three birdies  Driving was awful, switched to 5w at one point. After birdieing the first two par three's joked I'd complete the set. Nearly chipped in for one at the third of them and hit a great tee shot into the fourth but just missed the putt. One of my playing partners out did me with five on his way to shooting +4 gross (76).

Tough winds today and just under 7,100yds saw me shoot 80(1 under handicap)

Felt strange to be getting 9 shots from the very back blue tees when I normally only get 5 (yellow) or 7 (white)

The 16th is a par 5 that is 600yds and today it was playing a heck of a lot longer as it was straight into the wind (my watch said 610yds to the back of the green when we were stood on the tee)
Both of us said that if someone told us we could walk to the next tee and write a 6 on the card, we would take it and run - we both made a bogey as well

Last time I checked, I was sitting about 7th out of almost 70 players, so happy with that

EDIT - Confirmed 7th place finish (nett 71) and 4 shots behind the winner (20 handicap) who shot a nett 67

Got a new record yesterday...

Managed to hit my 60° 190 yards with what was probably the thinnest thin of all time.

Tried to get clever with a full-blooded shot with it and thinned it so badly that I'm surprised the bounce (T grind on my SM10, for reference) didn't slice right through the ball :D

Got cut to 5.3 after the round yesterday

Went out after work and played 9 with my wife as she is playing a team match tomorrow for the first time

Made a birdie on the first, then a lost ball on the second saw a double bogey result - decided I am going to change my tee club on that hole and accept the longer second shot. The hole is a dogleg right with OB all down that side and if you don't fade your tee shot enough you go through the fairway and the rough is very high and thick at the moment

Rallied for the rest of the round with 7 straight pars but had at least 4 birdie chances that didn't drop

How many of you ditched the 4 iron for a hybrid or wood? What does the long end of your bag comprise of?

Me me me! :p

Saying that my first two iron sets didn't have a 4 iron so didn't really ditch it, my Takomo's came with a 4 iron and did give it a go but didn't stick/see the point.

My main staples in the top end of my bag right now are Driver, 5 Wood ('ancient' Callaway Mavrik) and Srixon Z U85 2 Iron. I've also got a 3 wood that rarely sees the light of day and a 7 wood (Callaway Paradym) that I love but when carrying I favour the 5 wood really and use that as a space to drop a club/save weight as they're kinda close.

I'm not sure I'd reccomend the 2 iron really, it is a 'driving iron' style so actually not that hard to hit but you do need some swing speed, when I first got it I was a lot slower (and I'm still pretty slow) so it really just didn't work, now though I can get it to carry a good 170-180 ish depending on strike and it's got a lovely low ball flight for those windy days. It's doable off the deck, for me probably more successful off the deck than a 3 wood, but it's more of a tee club really most of the time.

5 Wood though, love that thing, everyone should have one :D

I keep meaning to look at replacing it tbh, mostly cause as mentioned it's very close to the 7 wood really, I dunno if a newer/shinier 5 wood would have that bit more speed to seperate the two or whether I should go something like a 4 wood. But it works so why change :p I've had it ~3.5 years now, and barely been playing golf for 4, so it's like 600+ rounds old at this point and by far the 'oldest' club in the bag. There is a wear mark on the shaft so I guess when it breaks that'll force me to get a new one

I've currently got driver then 4 iron through to wedges. (only 12 clubs total). So a big gap between driver and 4 iron. I "can" hit my 4 iron around 200 yards total roll out on a perfect strike, but that's rare, and I just generally don't feel comfortable with it and even the 5 iron at times. Driver can go anything from about 250 - 290 total. There are holes where I am finding I can't hit driver as I'll roll too far into ditches or rough, but I can't do a weak driver swing or it just doesn't work for me. Like I can't hit driver 75%. For me it's full swing or nothing.

So I need something between 4 iron and driver and I may even replace 4 iron with something else entirely. I used to have a 3 wood but hated it so stopped using it. I found on good strikes it went nearly as far as driver, and on poor ones...well...anywhere. Completely inconsistent and I could never hit it off the deck so ditched it. This will mostly be used off the tee. I've been trying to simplify my setup as much as possible so have just been sticking with driver and the rest irons. Not sure what to do really.

How far do you find 5 wood goes in comparison to your drives? Do you use it off the tee as well?

I'll use it both off the tee and deck, seems reasonably similar between the two but maybe a slight advantage off the tee. Currently Garmin has my average drive as 228 and average 5w as 193, gotta love averages though, feel like that's close to what I'd expect to carry 'my best' with those clubs, today for example I hit a lovely 5w draw from the first cut of rough and it landed in the greenside bunker at 188 yards. But then I also hit 2 in a row on a par 5 with both being mediocre strikes for 169 and 162. So yeah. 193 :p

Off the tee it's a great club to hit when Driver brings all the trouble into play, it's so easy to hit off the deck and even lighter rough that once you tee it up it feel like you can't miss.

I have never found a hybrid that has worked for me, so my last couple sets of irons that were fitted have gone all the way to 4i - current set is a combo of Srixon Z785 4-6i and then Z Forged 7i to PW

The top end of my bag goes driver - 3w - Srixon ZU85 2i then 4i down

Offtt- been unwell for nearly a week...

Played Royal Troon last Thursday in team match. Scorching 30 degrees at tee off.... Umbrellas were up to keep the sun off!! 3 litres of water and factor 30 all round.

Played really well on the front 9, was 5 up thru 5 including a birdie at 3 and a given putt for birdie from 4ft at 5.

Put it in the coffin bunker at the postage stamp (7th) but got out first time from a stinker of a lie. Went on to play not so well on the back 9 but won 4&3.

Team won 5-1 overall which means we are unbeaten in the group stages with 5 wins and a draw. Into county quarters finals now. Waiting on other groups to play to a finish to see who we get.

Course was lovely as always, green super smooth but not too quick.

Played Wednesday medal - absolutely awful - probably worse gross score of the year..... 88.

Handicap up to 5.8 now - needs to be more like 7/8 at the moment - struggling off the tee still. No practice time:(

Played with the regular group today, and after last week's cut to 5.3 I was only getting 4 shots off the yellow tees

Which would have been fine if I hadn't forgot how to putt - had 4 3-putts across the round today and only scored 33 points (gross 79)

Without those I should have had 37 points and shot 75 as I drove the ball well with multiple 300yd+ drives and some good iron and wedge shots but couldn't buy a putt

Pins were a bit tough today as it was day 1 of our club champs so true course was set up a big t tougher than normal

On the plus side I did win one of the nearest to the pin holes today

Handicap will creep back up a bit as today's score was pushing out a counting score which was a differential of 4.0

Played comp yesterday and it was windy, shot 31 over playing of 21
Today I went out and shot 8 under my handicap with an 85 with 8 pars and no lost balls.
Confusing old game. My aim for the summer is to get my HCP into the teens and being 13 over today is showing its there somewhere

Handicap went back up to 5.8 after the round yesterday

Played a mixed open today with my wife and some friends of ours

Being brutally honest, the course was not in great shape. It has been a while since I last played there, but the greens were not receptive and beyond slow. Needless to say we won't be rushing back there anytime soon

We finished with 72 points and when we left, the leading score was 86

The scary thing is it is one of the courses we considered joining when our old club closed - after seeing it today we were glad we didn't

Today I went out straight after the England game and was first on course. Absolutely beautiful out there. Saw deer on some holes again.

Par 4 388 yards. Driver middled down the fairway...baby draw.
I've got 95 yards in to the flag which is middle of the green, slight slope running up to the hole.
As it's so early, the groundsmen have left the sprinklers running on this hole. Two of them are firing just before the green high into the air, creating a pretty mist with a rainbow running through it as the sun has risen low in the sky straight behind the hole.
I pure my 56 degree straight on line with the hole...
It glides over and through the fine mist of the sprinklers and for what seemed like it was fully online, but I partially lose sight looking straight into the sun...
I see it bounce a couple of times and it seemed like it was online, but then the sprinklers and sun cause me to lose it again.
I wonder up and take the uber long way around to the green to not get wet.
As I wonder up to the green... ffs where's my ball?!
How the hell has that scooted off the back of the green.
Keep looking. Nope.
It can't be?! Can it!?
Checks hole.
