Because I spent five years in England. Didn't like it. Too cold, too dull.
i left SA about 8 years ago, not looking back to be honest, been here in the uk for that time now, the world is huge and i wanna work and see it all.
i was born in JHB, but lived most of my time in East London/Knysna, i find the UK great, but hell Africa is always in my blood. I’ve been asked many times if i would ever go back and my response is always the same “i don’t think i would, holiday yes, but living no”. i know the country and people are fantastic, and I’ll always call myself an SA boy, but it holds no future for me, and if i think about having kids in future, sure yes i say i would like them to grow up there and experience it, but the days i remember from my childhood are far from what happens now. i couldn’t live in a compound worrying about being attacked etc etc, daily life, sure knysna was sheltered and safe in comparison, but even so.
I’m glad I’ve left; I’ve made some great friends over here, been able to move and live freely, travel wherever and do whatever. When i talk to and meet up with mates from my schooldays back there i find them very narrow-minded, and well, shortsighted.
Sure the weather sucks here most of the time, but you learn to live with it. as to being dull, that’s a matter of opinion. I suppose East London was never the hub of excitement, and frankly today is very very dull, knysna was cool, relaxed and enjoyable. London has soo much to offer, and the rest of the country as well. I find living and enjoying what the different places have to offer is the best thing to experience, travel broadens the mind, and offers up plenty of opportunities. The best thing about the UK is the multi cultural aspect of it, and being in the centre of the world, sod the Americans thinking they are the be all and end all, the centre of the map, this place is the hub, cheap flights to wherever you like, any time, any day thanks to the pound.
I`m about to make a shift to Australia within the next few months, and that will bring about far more, things to experience, people to meet, places to go, work etc etc, so should be great.
Getting back on topic, sorry to hear about your boet, i`m constantly hearing about these things happening, moreso from zim, and it baffles me why people stay, but then well that’s their choice and so be it.
