*** Grand Theft Auto IV - The Official Thread ***

Not having the game Im just going to guess here, isn't there a helicopter at the helicopter tour place in the bottom right of the middle island? (worrying how much I've picked up about this game)

see you're doing it again. it is EXACTLY like looking through frosted glass and i keep saying its not just the background, its everything. re4 on the wii had the same look but that never bothered me because it was on the wii. its not acceptable on the ps3. if you arent seeing what im seeing on my 40" screen then im happy for you. its blindingly obvious on a big screen. you wonder why people keep saying the same thing when you arent listening lol.

give it a rest ffs man, some people like myself LOVE yes LOVE the filtered look of the PS3 version, I'll take that any-day over the dithering on the 360 version, just PERSONAL PREFERENCE, but like I've said countless of times on here I don't think either version is ultimately better, get over it, accept it, play the game and enjoy it.

I love you too :)

Anyway, back on topic eh?

I have the middle and right islands open to me at the moment. Is there anywhere I can easily get a helicopter from and are there any cars worth storing bar the turismo and the comet at this point?

I really like the 'viper' style car which you get, can't remember the name of it now and the Strategy Guide doesn't have all the vehicles listed this time :(

I noticed another thing though yesterday. As you know, if you leave your engine running in a parking save point then it's likely to be nicked so you hold the exit button to turn the engine off - well as I was exiting a turismo a taxi passed by a bit too close and took my door off and when i came back it had gone

I don't understand why some are still moaning about the different versions, get over it ffs and play the game if you not happy then sell your copy, everytime i lookin here its somone complaining, just play the damn game.

"The Snow Storm" - What a really **** Mission ;[
Hah! So I'm not the only one. I tried it about ten times, in two sessions, before I left it until I had nothing else to do, then I went back to it (a bit like the train chase mission). After I paused and thought about what I was gonna do, I did it second time (first time failed due to falling in the sea and getting run over by a patrol boat). Not sure this is the thread for spoilers, though.

+1

and if anyone doesn't like their 360 version i'll buy it for £15 ^^

What I meant was show me a TV that ships with the sharpness at 0 by default, it's only the movie buffs who are anal about achieving a pixel perfect image that will ever turn the sharpness off completely, the majority of gamers including those on this forum will all likely have some level of sharpness enabled.

what does it matter what the sharpness is set at when shipped? you wont find a single lcd that doesnt have to be tweaked to get the best out of it. not one.

But anyway, where you set the sharpness control depend largely on how it works. some tv's work on a 1 to 100 scale with 50 being off and anything below applying a blur. my tv (sony) works on a different scale. 0-30 with 0 being OFF. on my tv there is no way to apply blur with the sharpness control. if 50 is really off on your tv then your not applying sharpening at all, but from that image you are so i dont know. i have never needed to use sharpening for anything, none of my games on my ps3, wii, nothing. except gta4:)

All I'm saying is that a sharpness setting of 50 will not affect sharpness on most TVs, while lowering the sharpness will apply a "blurring" mask at a varying aggressiveness while increasing the sharpness will do the same but with an "edge enhancing" mask.

it all depends where that 'off' setting sits on the sharpness scale. for other games or bluray, or anything from the pc, mine stays at 0 and you cant say films suffer because of it http://homepage.ntlworld.com/james.miller700/apocalypto1.jpg

no:) if you are playing it on a tv comparable to mine, you'd be saying the same thing too but of course, you'd be singing a very different tune then. the 360 version on the big screen looks a lot better unless you apply a lot of sharpening.

Right after nearly a week of playing it, and letting the hype leave the system

My verdict of the game is 7/10. It really isn't that special. It's nothing on Vice City

90% of the missions are so unimaginative its untrue, pretty much all of them involve you shooting about 20 people then losing your wanted level. Fun the first few times but boring after that.

As well as that, and I've already said this in the multiplayer thread, that just seems rushed, now I spent the best part of Saturday online with a few friends, and we all agreed, that apart from the "oh my god its GTA online" value, there really isnt much to it and it just feels rushed and tacked on for the sake of it

Another problem I have, why do I keep getting all of this money? I have near 600k, and naff all to spend it on. I spend about 10k on guns every few missions, but other than that, nothing. Food is $5 at a time, taxi fares are barely anything. What about the properties or something. Otherwise I don't see the point in the amount of money at all

The characters are also all pretty dull. Other than Brucie, none of them seem like your typical GTA characters, something quirky or hilariously messed up about them. They're all just rather plain. And certain choices in the game are rather pointless when you have been given no emotional attachment to certain characters other than a couple of missions between them. Also, whats with the girlfriend system? I have 4 girls at 100% now, and I really haven't seen these benefits that the game mentioned at the start of the game. And other than to pass two minutes, I really can't see another purpose. I'm not moaning about that, but, it just feels like yet another feature thrown on just for the sake of having it

There are quite a few glitches in the game too most annoying of which is if my motorbike flips over upside down, my character seems too stupid to turn it over, even though if its turned on its side down an impossibly thin alley he'll do it just fine. which can cost you a mission.

Don't get me wrong, it's a great game, but it certainly isnt game of the year, it's just a game that was carried way too far by its hype.

Flame away if you must

I actually find this more enjoyable than SA tbh, i played that for a few hours and soon lost interest in it, but its deffo not as good as the hype machine says.

Not going to flame you as it's your opinion. But out of curiosity what would you give GOTY to then? If you don't think this game is GOTY then you must have something better in mind???

Well in a pretty dry start to the year in games it hasnt got much competition

But I got just as much enjoyment if not more from Burnout Paradise, Lost Odyssey and RSV2

And the fact Burnout especially offers far more replay value that I can see GTA4 giving. I certainly wouldnt want to have to play through half those missions again

And walking around causing trouble isnt half as fun as the previous games have been

agree

I think it's great I haven't played it for hours and hours yet but actually the missions are quite boring at the start I've enjoyed more just cruising around in the car.

Some quirks are there though but you can't have everything.

I am impressed by the game of pool and the bowling is fun.

I love the slow mo' vids off the ramps.

There was a ramp late last night I didn't get enough speed up so ended up landing on the motorway below and got a message saying "not far enough" or something like that so I presume there's an unlockable for doing the jump.

Also just got my "warm coffee" unlocked :p

Careful, all the pathetic little fangirls threw enormous tantrums when I said this at the games release.

I pretty much agree with everything you've said in your post. The game just seems to lack that maniacal GTA edge that most of us really love. The characters, with one or two exceptions feel far too 'serious' and none, with the exception of that nut case Brucie are memorable. My second gripe is that too much 'fun' has been stripped out of the game, and the huge scale of Liberty City merely serves as filler to spread out the few mini games and shops.

I'm thankful for the multiplayer, evenly though the lobby and game selection system was designed by a buffon. But without the instant laughs of mulitplayer GTA IV, to me, is essentially a tarted up GTA III, minus the charm of VC and San Andreas.

One of my hopes for the DLC cash cow is that it adds some more stuff for us to do in the city.

Anyway that's my tuppence worth. Back to the flaming and recriminations. :D

I agree with the missions being a bit boring. I like some of the ones where you have to call your target to find where they are, or apply for a job and going for an interview. But too many of them are, go here, kill this, come back.

I still love the game, my GOTY.

What I find most exciting though, is what they are going to do next. We all know how awesome VC was after GTA3, so I am hoping for something spectacular next time round :)

Still loving this game though.
