Greenlizard0 Weekend Football Thread ** spoilers ** [17th - 19th September 2011]

A manager defending his player? shocking. He's alluding to the fact that at 3-1 down it's a desperate lunge/challenge in an attempt to keep his team in the game and that's exactly what it looks like rather than an attempt to break Hernandez's legs.

It's pretty amusing how United fans can call Cole a dirty player yet for the last 15 years we've been subjected to "he's not a malicious player it's because he can't tackle"

I haven't ever said that. I'm not going to be held accountable for the words of 340~ million other fans.

Cole is a dirty **** and AVB seems to be a bit of an arse, Chelsea tend to be extremely bitter in defeat anyway. Also, we all know Cole CAN tackle (though he's very overrated).

What did he say in defence?

Villas-Boas admitted that Cole was fortunate not to be sent off, but argued that the incident might not have happened had his players not been “emotionally drained” by decisions that went against Chelsea. Smalling and Nani were both offside for their goals.

“Maybe he wouldn’t have been sent off if the linesman does his work, he would have been less emotionally drained and maybe if it was 0-0, Ashley would have been in more control of the situation and not done that red-card foul,” Villas-Boas said. “I’m not looking for excuses. It’s the reality because it’s 2-0 rather than 0-0. It was a good game for Phil [Dowd], but I’m pretty unhappy with the linesman.”

Didn’t really expect him to say much more really but of course expected some red folk to see red. ;)

In that case every other manager must be an arse. SAF done an interview the other day when asked about Lindegaard replacing De Gea, it was a relevant question due to Lindegaard's performance which was asked in a non inflammatory way yet he went off on a rant. Every manager defends their players.

I take it when Mourinho takes over at Man U he won't be a ******?

:p

He'll always be a ******, some tossers are likeable though, others not so much. :p

Way to completely miss the point.

So you admit scholes is a dirty **** too ;D?

Maybe he didnt need to go off on a rant, but it was also pretty obvious the interviewer was asking as much about De Gea for Chelsea game as how good Lindergaard was against Benfica (imo)

I think you meant WAS (as he has retired)

Big difference that Scholes's game didnt rely on tackling where as Cole's (being a defender) most definitely does.

When Xavi and Iniesta to name but two players who have recently said Scholes was easily the best they have played against - that kinda shows how he is seen within the game imo.

The recent (in last two seasons) couple of hand ball incidents were worse than any of his "malicious" tackles

You have a lot of spare time Tom, or have a job which pays you to do little 0.o

Why? Do you think it really took that much time to search this thread and find Gilly's rather limited number of posts and highlight them? As they're all bashing United it was actually very easy to do :D

Is any of it inaccurate?

Chelsea scored, and should have scored more. The tackle on Rooney was a great challenge, it was given because Rooney fell over. I laughed at Rooney for missing a penalty (as many will have done). Anderson is pap (did you see his 'outside of the boot swept pass out to the right wing' just before he went off? No-one within 50 yards of the pass) and I was saying manyoo were then stronger. Rooney fouled Ivanovic in the run-up to the attempt on goal that saw Hernandez get injured (would never have happened if Dowd hadn't had his red specs on). The draw would have been fair, and Giggs had a miss that was listed as the worst ever.

Butthurt?

No mention of the possible Career ending tackle by cole then? which never warranted a penlty but a yellow :D

Couldn't be a pen if the ball was out (which I was first to guess at I think).

He was patently trying to block it. It is a pretty nasty challenge though, is anyone denying that? I didn't.

Earlier in the same move was a foul on Ivanovic though, if the ref hadn't missed it the challenge wouldn't have happened as play would have been stopped ;)
