Greenlizard0 Weekend Football Thread ** spoilers ** [28th December 2013 - 1st January 2014]

You're old, your eye sight's gone.

And you can't call the Suarez/Eto incident dubious. The foul was clear as day and Webb had a clear look at it - maybe his eyes have gone too.

You watched the game on TV I assume , you've seen replays and had an opportunity to form an opinion based on more than that spilt second you see in real time, all through your red tinted glasses.
Even if it was clear on Suarez, **** him after last year.

So by that logic Suarez should always be punished in any future match? Give over if that was case allot of other players would never get a pen again. This is a ref who let a karate kick be okay.

Of course not, that would be silly.

Even Neville called the called the Hazard incident a (clever) dive and the Suarez one a blatant pen.

Not to mention the Eto challenge on Henderson that should have been a red. I was surprised at the lack of coverage for the Oscar challenge at the end - that was worthy of a red card too.

You were hugely fortunate today with some terrible decisions by Webb.

It's all very close at the top. Not much in it.
However, the top 3 have built a small 3 pt gap, over the rest.

I've said from the get go this season that Chelsea will win the title (they have the best manager in the World) and I don't see any reason to change my prediction.

Man City do have the best squad, though, so if anyone can negate "the Mourinho effect", it will be Man City.

Arsenal have played some great football at the start of the season and have now come off the boil HOWEVER, they are still hanging in there, grinding out results, which is what you need to do if you want to win the title.

Liverpool are difficult to assess. On the one hand, they have arguably the best striker in the World. But I can't help feel that if he has a few bad games (which he definitely will) or gets injured, Liverpool will tumble down the table. I think Liverpool's season will be depend almost entirely on Suarez's form.

And then we have Everton. Are they overperforming because of an outstanding manager? Or have they been held back for many years by Moyes and now that he has left, they are performing at their true level? Whatever the case, I do not believe that they can finish in the top 4. I think 5th or 6th for Everton.

I think the top 4 will consist of:

Chelsea, Man City, Arsenal and Liverpool.

Out of interest: question for Everton supporters: are you happy that Moyes has gone?

That's that then if Neville reckons it wasn't a pen and the Suarez one was.
It didn't look that bad on Lucas by Oscar but Lucas definitely seemed to grabbed Oscar's throat which should've been a straight red surely.
We were better than you today, irrespective of any officials decisions, fortune favours the better.

You hinted that my views were clouded by bias. A former Utd player that openly admits to hating Liverpool, as well as every non-Chelsea supporter that I've seen comment on the incidents, said the Hazard incident was a dive and the Suarez one was an obvious penalty.

Oscar jumped in two footed - it was a very bad challenge. And no, Lucas didn't grab Oscar by the throat. He pushed the side of Oscar neck/shoulder and Oscar pushed him back.

So Oscar & Lucas should've been sent off then if that's the case or maybe just Lucas if it wasn't that bad a tackle and Lucas retaliated to it badly as it really didn't look that bad in real time.
Neville may openly hate Liverpool but he doesn't let that cloud his views on what he sees, he just says what he sees. If you're going to start using his views (or every non Chelsea supporter's) as gospel then you're in a bad way.
As I said, in real time both liked like pens but I personally couldn't care if Suarez never got another one ever.

Not at the time and that's all that matters. Martinez himself has said he couldn't believe what great shape the club was in on and off the pitch when he took the job. Martinez is doing things differently and bought in a few players but he inherited a solid team to begin with.

I prefer the football we now play but I don't for a minute think that we will finish any higher than we would have done under moyes anyway, we will just score more goals and play a more attractive entertaining game.

I think the defence he's been left has done martinez massive favours and he was left the best bunch of players we had for years.

Eto, Oscar and maybe Lucas should have been sent off if you think a push is worthy of a red card. I guess Oscar would get an extended ban as he should have already received a red card for his challenge, before he pushed Lucas :p

And I've not used Neville or anybody else's opinion as my own. I gave my opinion which you claimed was down to bias - I simply pointed out that every sensible person/non Chlesea supporter shares that opinion. Maybe your views are a result of watching the game, albeit without replays, with your plastic glasses on. Do they give them out free too? ;)

And no **** you don't care if Suarez doesn't get a penalty, especially not against you. I wouldn't want Hazard to get a pen, against us or otherwise, even if Skrtel kicked him in the head and not just because he's a cheat. I want Liverpool to win and none of their rivals (+ Utd) to.

We've had arguably our hardest 2 games of the season back to back, with an already thin squad that's been hit by injuries, and shocking decisions from the officials have cost us points in both games. It's ****ing annoying.

The ref was a disgrace. Eto'o should have gone, Suarez should have had a pen and Oscar should have been given a red at the end. The fact that none of these game changing decisions were given is worrisome.

Of course this doesn't change the fact that Liverpool were mostly awful. The midfield looked like a bunch of bullied scared kids and the defence hasn't got a clue.

You've said this a few times and I can't help but think you're doing Martinez a huge disservice.

From a personnel point of view you've still got Jagielka & Distin at the heart of your defense with Howard behind them but you're defending in a totally different way to how you defended under Moyes.

You only have to look at Liverpool when Rodgers took over to see how good a job Martinez has done with regards to your defense. We were excellent at the back under Dalglish but when Rodgers took over and the same back 4 were asked to play very similar to how Everton are now, we looked a mess.

We weren't as good as we were against City but we weren't awful. You could see that 10 of that starting 11 were playing their 4th game in 2 weeks.

I questioned after the City game whether we could put in another high tempo midfield performance for a 4th time in a short period and it's not a surprise we couldn't, even less so when Rodgers said that both Henderson and Allen (who was forced off with an injury) went into the game injured.

Playing City and Chelsea away back to back was always going to be hard but with the injuries we have and such a short turn around, it was a massive task.

I think your over egging it a bit there Baz. As one of the commentators pointed out at the end of the game. That was Chelseas 29th game compared to Liverpool's 21st. Two games back to back against strong teams should not be a big ask really. Maybe Liverpool's squad isn't as strong 1-25 compared to the likes of the other teams but until a week ago, Liverpool have had the benefit of game, rest, perpetration and then a game 6 or 7 days a later

I thought Chelsea were by far the better team today, but Webb was a total disgrace. His decisions (or lack of them) had more influence on the result than any of the players did. As usual, more concerned with showboating for the cameras than refereeing the game properly.

I'm glad Rodgers didn't call him out for it and complemented him for his performance. It's the only way to get any change out of the egotistical *****

Loads of ways you could look at it. Maybe he's just more fortunate that Moyes got in more versatile defenders in the first place. It's not like Martinez showed any signs of being able to assemble a good defensive unit at any other club he's been at. Having a solid platform to build on has made his job far easier that say the defence moyes has been left at United.

Right now Hibbert could get a run out at United ;)

As a chelsea fan i am used to 'Pool stealing pts and legs from us, but this game showed how far liverpool have come in less than a year.

As long as they qualify for CL they will be a force to compete with spurs and manU in the next season. John Henry will need to invest major cash though which might be a problem because city, chelsea, barca, RM, BM, will all be going after the same sort of options in the summer.

Allen, Sakho now out for up to 2/3 weeks. Bloody ell. Hope fsg give some funds this window, Chelsea showed there depth as well compared to ours, Ivan off Cole on. 2 of the best defenders in the league.
