Greenlizard0 Weekend Football Thread ** spoilers ** [30th Mar - 2nd April 2012]

Liverpool could end up finishing up in the bottom half at this rate, it's not even like they have any significant injuries to speak of or use as an excuse, the team they put out today is pretty much their first-choice?

Fair play to the Toon though they've done really well with their new signings who have slotted right in and Pardew has been doing a good job too.

I agree. European football could be a poisoned challace for us next season if we get it (apart from the obvious financial benefit).

Just look at Stoke this season.

Expect us to qualify for the Europa league and then be fighting for a mid-table position in the EPL next year.
We won't get into Europe this season, there is no way Liverpool are going to beat everton they way they are playing and that's the only way we were going to get in( unless we can overhaul Chelsea which isn't going to happen)

Difference is, Stoke were crap last year, played crap football and are crap, Stoke are crap this year and play crap football, they just had one particularly lucky year in the league. They weren't out there smashing good teams 3-0, they were scraping wins against teams with a whole lot of cheating and fouling thrown in to spoil the other side. Euro football has cost them to some degree, but so is simply being a pretty poor side ;)
Ignorance is bliss when you don't rate a team isn't it? You've just made up every single one of those points about them last year.

But again this is where making a killing on players who aren't worth it comes in, you can strengthen and build the squad effectively without getting into debt and relying on income you might not get.

I mean, Newcastle have on a dozen + occasions looked like a side who could geniunely compete for a top 4 place, Stoke, honestly never once in 5 years have I ever watched them, even winning, even with a decent margin said to myself, they look like european/top of the table team, ever, their football is dire, their tactics are terrible, they don't have particularly athletic or fit players, just big thugs. Newcastle, not saying they'll win the Europa league and move up to 4th, but they are a completely different prospect to Stoke to the degree that they are incomparable, quite simply one team can play football, the other can't.

I'm sorry but stoke play to there strengths like every team does it might not be pretty but it works ( I personally couldn't sit and watch that drivel but stoke fans do)

Yup, I lied on purpose, really I watched stoke all last year and I loved the beautiful flowing passing football and the way they looked like a top team all season, no really I did. They were fantastic getting to 13th in the league, they weren't known for fouling and didn't play a particularly aggressive type of football and they certainly didn't have any luck reaching the final in that the toughest team they had to beat was Bolton.

I didn't say they can't, they still play crap football, who cares, that wasn't the point made or my point. Someone said Euro football could hurt Newcastle like it has Stoke, except, it won't because Newcastle simply play much much better football.

As for working, that's one way to describe it, accurate and also not, it works in as much as they got 13th in the Premier league which is vastly better than many many teams in the country, it doesn't work in that they will never finish (outside of maybe a fluke here or there) in the top 6, it simply isn't good enough to ever get there.

But its really neither here nor there, Euro football did effect Stoke as they looked in several post Euro games just diabolic and tired, tiredness could certainly hurt Newcastle but being a simply better footballing team they will still scrape out results as other better teams do after Euro games. Stoke are where they are now because of the quality of the team mostly and slightly due to some extra bad performances post Europe, we're not talking about them competing for 7-8th had they not been in Europe in the same way that Newcastle aren't going to go from pushing only 5 points behind 3rd currently to mid table just because or European football.

EDIT:- Honestly didn't realise how close Sunderland/Fulham/Swansea/Norwich are to Liverpool, though you would normally put money on even a poo Liverpool to beat Villa next weekend, mighty close though.

Sixth gets us into Europa league doesn't it?

As good a season as you've had and squad you've built, I honestly can't see how Newcastle can progress beyond where they are now in the near future. If that turns out to be the case then the best you can hope to achieve (in terms of trophies) is winning 1 of the 2 domestic cups.

Neither can I but being one of the only clubs Ran in a financially sound manner and not spending way beyond our means I would be overjoyed with top 7 every year. We could then focus on trying to win a cup (FA/Carling or Europa) and thats nothing to be ashamed of considering we aren't spending £100mil every summer.

I would be overjoyed with that but it depends on a) hanging on to sixth which is no guarantee and b) being able to cope with europe and league.

Nope 5th and the 2 cups get a euro place,so if Chelsea finish 5th they get Euro Liverpool have it for carling cup and the FA cup will get it( if the winner is already in euro it goes to the runner up if the runner up is in Euro it goes to 6th place) so if everton beat Liverpool they will get he euro spot

DM isnt even worth a response , I can write pages and pages of absolute drivel regarding Arsenal but its bit like smaking msyelf in the head = pointless

He has truth in his ramblings regarding us no one can deny it but its personal opnions cloud his judgement and make him look bitter, Whats up Dm did one of the naughty thug stoke players look at you badly from your comfortable armchair?

We went from the manor ground to the Mestella in 10 years, NO TRUE stoke fan from that time can even believe we would be able to upset the likes of the glourious Arsenal fans in years to come

Or he was squaring up to him to get in his face, and as you said a fake headbutt, no intention of actually doing it therefore not a red and it is a red for Perch for diving and also the trip of Reina when he collected the ball :)

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA

Edit - LOL

That would be a shame if we missed out, still a tremendous effort though.

I would be happy being a "cup" team as we don't have the resources to win the league unfortunately. Finish as high as we can every year and try and win a cup is good for a club who hasn't got insane money. Ideally we would push for fourth but it's pretty well locked up these days.

I can handle losing the euro place to everton I would have been suicidal if we had lost it to Sunderland

I love how Kenny Dalglish says that if people can't see the Simpson handball was a penalty they should "go to Vision Express", yet then has the gall and hypocrisy to claim that Carroll 'stumbled' when he clearly dived. It probably was a penalty, but if he's going to say something like he did, he immediately loses all respect in my book. I thought it was a well-deserved win for Newcastle today, they were the better team for the first half and apart from Liverpool having the Simpson penalty appeal and the blocked Suarez shot, Newcastle looked comfortable.

Spurs also got a decent win, I hope they get CL football as I like the way they play.

Don't forget the fact he said Suarez chested the ball in the goal the other day... :D

What judgement did I make that was untrue that my personal opinion "clouded" exactly, I do love posts along the lines of "you're wrong, because I say so but I won't tell you why".

My personal opinions FORM my judgement on Stoke, as do yours, that is kind of how it works, I dislike their style of football, I find no entertainment in it, and its not good enough to be top of the league, there isn't much more too it.

Also you can't upset Arsenal fans, I'm not upset, I dislike Stoke, nothing more or less, I neither brought up Stoke nor said they couldn't play they way they could the ONLY thing I said is Newcastle are unlikely to "suffer" from European football "like Stoke did" as SOMEONE ELSE said, because Newcastle are simply a team playing top 6 football this year, Stoke weren't at any stage last year or this year.

You'll also find I'm the least over reacting fan on this forum whos opinion NEVER changes from one game to the next on a bad result. Stoke can beat us, as can West Ham, or anyone else, if they play well, good on them, if they fluke it, lucky, that's football we get lucky and beat teams we play worse than, again that's football. I've never gotten upset or angry at another team beating Arsenal, because it only means Arsenal didn't play well enough, nothing more or less.

Lastly..... I watch football from a sofa, not an armchair ;)
