Growing Vegetables

Gardening is easy but you need to keep an eye on what is happening, I'd say at least 10-30min a day (but that depends on size of the garden). My parents have a garden with glass house and grow tomatoes, lettuce, carrots, potatoes, and many many more vegetables, on top of that they have sweet cherry trees, peaches, grapes, apple trees and some berry trees. It's not rocket science to grow vegetables. But me myself cant be bothered, I prefer to use my computer and play games or watch TV :)
How could I forget, fresh strawberries :D yammme :D

Because they are in the dark the plant draws more nutrients and stuff from the soil so the stalks are better, however if kept in the direct sun you get better leaves as we all know due to photo synthesis, however you dont eat the leaves

Gotcha. I force mine with an old bin over the top. every 2-3 weeks I was getting an armful of 12-14" stalks. Bloody lovely it was too :D

Im going to keep mines in the garage, and bring it out every so often, her dads ****** me off about the whole deal tho. hes so patronising about gardening, he came up to the plot on saunday and i was close to cracking his coupon with a shovel, god you would thing the old phart was the only one who ever grew veg, n he doters around getting in ma way. ahhhhh

I have apples, pears, plums, cherries, blackcurrants, raspberries, blackberries, potatoes, cabbage, purple brocolli, sprouts, parsnips, peas, rhubarb, and grapes on the go at the minute.
The plums look like they are going to be a bumper crop this year as well

Well I've had to leave my "grow patch" for nearly a month now due to other commitments. With the very unusual sunny weather this bank holiday weekend it's time to dig it over, get out the compost and see what I can plant this year.

Looks good, If you are lucky some garden centres may have some established plants you can get n so you wouldnt be too late.

I would say you would need to dig in a fair bit Manure or compost tho and give it a good waterng

What kinda stuff is a fast grower, meaning doesn't take long till i can eat the stuff. Would be nice if it made a lot as well. Just fancy trying my hand at gardening (hope the council garden bit out back will be ok).

You get letuces that you just pick the leaf and use it like that so you dont have to wait for ages on a letuce forming.

Im not 100% sure on fast growing Veg but a quick google should sort you out.

One thing i did find that looks quite good is Growing Vegetables

Any of the gardeners here know if an average sized bucket would be big enough to grow a single globe artichoke plant? Never grown one before and I want to grow all my veg in moveable containters- mainly as a cheap way of having them raised as the bottom of my garden does not drain well.

Also, I recently planted a bunch of tulip bulbs but they didn't do well at all- some leaves and then they died. I'm guessing it's because the bulbs were very small and had been stored for ages. I'm hoping that they have got stronger now tehy're planted and hopefully grow better next spring. I heard that once they go over a good method is to feed them (i'm guessing miracle grow?) and this will pretty much then stay in teh bulb for next year. anyone know if this is a good thing to do? Also, would it then be best to take them out of the containers in a month or so and store them dry, or replant then now ready for next year?

thanks in advance!!

Our patch is doing quite well apart from the lettuces are getting attacked by slugs - no great shakes as the lettuces were for the chickens and the slugs are busy on them and leave the rest of the veg alone.

Beetroots are up, onions are doing well.
Purple sprouting is doing really well as are the sprouts.

Sprouts I am not too sure about as I thought the best tasting ones were found after a good frost not in mid summer.

Beans and peas are now climbing up the sticks and the rhubarb has been attacked a few times for some nice stewed rhubarb snacks!

Bought a few 'spud bags' which I have been topping up regularly as well.
Strong black bags with handles is what they really are, but the spuds seem to like it!

We have had a grape vine for a few years as well - first year we had bucketloads of graps (we are lucky and have a nice sheltered garden that gets nice and warm). Year two we moved it so didn't get much but this year its growing like no ones business so fingers crossed we will get a load of grapes again.

So be prepared for the wine making tips if it happens!

I actually bought a book on whats best to grow when and its quite handy.

Good luck with all your patches!

M.

Apparently so, just googled it and a few things say it should be possible.

My girls dad is growing some stuff in our garden and the slugs have gone BANZAI with it other than the spring oniojns and leeks, ours arent effected as they are in a green house way along the coast at my uncles and the veg plot is full of spuds and the brusell plants are covered so they cant get to them.

Going to take a drive to rip off DIY aka 'B&Q' tomorrow, apparently they have a sale on at the moment so maybe things will be 'normal' priced!

That patch has VERY good soil as it is, it's lovely at soft at the moment after all the rain we've had recently. My composter has been working all year and is now ready so I'll spread some on once I've tidied it up. Been working on the borders today, we're doing the latest fad of log border with bark in an attempt to keep the weeds at bay and to, eventually, appeal to potential buyers ;)

I had a really bad slug/snail problem last year, they were gorging themselves on everything and nothing I tried worked. This year I bought a large tub of pellets from B&Q for a couple of quid - I would normally avoid these as I have a dog and a daughter so I don't want to risk them playing with/eating the pellets. But they're so small you can barely see them once you've sprinkled them everywhere. I've not seen a single snail/slug this year :D

They're B&Q brand called "Blue slug pellets", big picture of a slug on the front ;)

:( I want to feel manly and have a Veg garden. I guess I need to wait until I have a house, then it'll be lawn and Veg tending all the way, with hopefully time to potter in a shed :D

I want to know which are the beansprout seeds to buy to grow beansprouts like u buy in a stirfry. Is it mung beans or somit?

Also hows best to grow em?

What could I grow outside in a small box about 4' x 1' ?

There's not a great deal of sunshine in the area it could go and would be exposed to the elements

Stuff like garlic, onions, chives, chillis herbs would be handy

Just bought some spring onion seeds off the bay. Hope its easy to grow, i wonder how much space i need for a nice crop that will last awhile.

Hope i can grow em cos i always love em but there just so expensive these days.

Edit: Btw, is it worth getting an allotment. I do fancy growing a lot of stuff all at once so i have variety of what to eat later from what i grow. I am a total novice and its probs stupid to think i will be any good at gardening but i would like to give it ago. I do have some soil out the back of my flat but its a communal place with bushes and the soil doesnt look too nice and its full of rubbish but maybe its usable i duno, an allotment might be more easier to get running up. I wonder how much they are if i got one. I know they are waiting lists too for them but still.

Man this thread has really got me wanting to grow my own stuff now. :) Stir frys a coming later this year if i can get a lot of stir fry stuff made.

6ft x 2 ft x 1ft

going to plant out my carrots tomorrow after i get some more compost.

Hi peeps,

I am in a flat at the moment and wondered if there is a decent solution to having a window box. I have no balcony and thought maybe there is some sort of box that could accomodate just fitting off the main window somehow ?

Unless Iam missing something you said it yourself, a window box.
They used to be a common site.
