Growing Vegetables

I watched 'How do that do that' or something on TV this morning and they had a commercial pepper grower showing how they grow things.

They use absolutely no soil - everything is grown on rockwall. They keep it damp and add the minerals in to make them shop perfect.

Interesting I thought :)

There are some fantastic ways of growingthings, one of the best i saw was 100% water, they add all the Nutrients and stuff into the water and it circulates and everythings grown that way in polly tunnels, it was mostly lettuce as by the time it got from one end of the trough to the other they were ready. Amazing i thought

Just did a quick google on Rockwool, intresting links, amazing how the first one i knew would pop up, Growing Plants in Rockwool

Thinking about ordering some gooseberry seeds, i remember i used to love em when my gran had them in her back garden when i was a kid.

Also liked them hard not soft like they are in supermarkets.

U reckon there easy to grow? How long u reckon they would take from planet to harvest?

Where abouts are you? If you're local to me your more than welcome to a cutting. You're probably looking at a good few years before you get a decent sized bush (stop sniggering at the back!).

Have you tried your local garden centre? They usually have reasonably priced fruit bushes which should be of a good size to cropeither this year or next.

Im from Sunderland so i think that would be rather far to go. Thanks for the offer tho its appreciated.

I might try a garden center or B&Q.

About my tomato plant. It's defo doing better since i watered it and stuck it on the window, the leaves are not drooping anymore YEY! :)

I started to build my automatic watering system at the weekend. Ordered the timer / computer for it last night, so once it's finished I won't have to spend ages lugging watering cans around the garden every night. Also means no need to beg the neighbours to water everything whilst on holiday - every morning everything will get a nice drink.

Working out what combination of drippers, sprayers and bits you need is geek heaven :D

Hozelock have a good PDF guide which lists all the parts.

I was considering that for the green house, but my uncle said he would happily go water them for me, as long as he got a few veg, also bought him some beer so he was happy.

Got a new Rhubarb plant today, Guy at work has six so will just need to try and nurture this one and let it grow.

Cool. Keep me updated id love to learn and see a rhubarb plant grow. :)

You can hear them grow if you want to. The best farmed rhubarb is grown in complete darkness to maximise stem growth and minimise the leaf (which you can't eat). As they grow rapidly, searching for sunlight, you can hear the creaking and popping of the stems and leafbuds opening. They even harvest it by candle light.

I 'force' mine under an upturned bin and it'll put on 30-40cm of growth in a couple of weeks.

Well it has one large leaf and 2 smaller ones just now with a large stalk coming off of the largest leaf.

I shal get pictures up later, at work just now so no means of uploading. its only in a smal 2" x 2" pot so isnt to big

That to me my friend looks like a full size tomatoe plant, I may be mistaken but does look rather large.

looks perfect on the left there, hopefully they let you, as far as im aware Councills/ Letting agencys will be ok pending you arent on their books for anything bad and you return the grounds to how they were if you move out.

Also on your tom plant, if there are any small leaves starting to vome inbetween the main stem and a branch, nick them out, just use your nail and pull them out, they sap life from the plant and are pointless

Did that when i got it as read about that. Cheers for the advice tho. And yeah i hope they let me, if no emails back to me by fri i will phone em on mon.

I think me and me mum that was over (her phone cam) saw flowers starting at the very top of the plant tiny little bud things. I really hope it can wait for repotting by next tue as thats when ill be able to afford pots and soil.
