Growing Vegetables

I've got Broad Beans, Basil, Strawberrys, Potato's and Tomato's on the go at the moment.

Also have Chilli's, Onions and Peppers which will be arriving shortly (my Mums partner took them off to get them from seed to plant-ish state) :)

Thinking about ordering some gooseberry seeds, i remember i used to love em when my gran had them in her back garden when i was a kid.

Also liked them hard not soft like they are in supermarkets.

U reckon there easy to grow? How long u reckon they would take from planet to harvest?

Gooseberry bushes are generaly quite hardy. i have 3 cuttings i took the other week and just plonked them in compost and kept watering them, they still appear to be growing so havent killed them.

Not sure on seeds tho. id recomed trying to get a plant tho.

Picked up a cherry tomato plant at the garden fair today, 30p and its about a ft tall. It is in a small pot, just gave it a good drink and poped it on my window. Need to read up now on how to care for this i.e when to water it and stuff.

all my salad leaves are pretty much ready - various cut and come again lettuce, rocket and spinich... some radishes are ready too... just dont feel like salad much :(

runners are just starting to sprout up too and the blueberry bush is in full flower so should give quite a bit of fruit this year :)

Im concerned about my tomatoes, peppers and chillis... they are only about 4 inches tall and looking very weak... hows everyone elses?

Our peppers and tomatoes are in the polytunnel. The peppers haven't really grown much since they first sprouted and most of that additional had been very recent. I think they'll need a bit more heat to thrive. The tomatoes were a bit pot bound but since getting them planted last week they're doing well about 5 inches tall but growing quick.

The potatoes however are off to a flyer, I've never seen ours start so well.

Here's to a bumper crop. :D

My Matatoes are growing like theresno stoping, previosly been told there well advanced for this time of year.

Peas are going well and lettuce is going strong.

Potatoes in the last 3 days have gone wild and my pepers seam to be slowly getting bigger.

Got a plant at work i need to take home and repot as the pots far to small, so got that to do at 9pm tonight

Should i be worried about the tomatoe plant, as the leaves seem to be drooping a bit.

Can you get Photos of it?

Drooping could be a number of things, How much sun does it get, how big is it, how moist is the ground its in? are there any pesticides on it, or any bugs.

Photos would be great

If its in a pot id get it out and somewhere like a grow bag and give it a good watering, more than likely the problem.

Just remember when re-planting plants always give them a good watering, the plant im re-potting tonite is willting as its in a pot way to small for it, Poor thing has been in my Operations/ Account managers office for ages in a pot about 4" diamiter and the plants about 2.5 - 3 foot its just crazy.

I Paid £1.50 from Homebase, there 33litres, obviously because i cant see your windowsill im not sure they would fit LOL

But to be honest you could buy one and put the compost into a decent sized pot/ bin and grow it from that even a trough type planter, many people do that, just Key note is Warm and Moist :D just how i like it lol.

The pot its in now is one that is like a cup size so id say 3" high 2" wide. I am guessing its a foot ish size which is about 10-14" aprox high. My window is the kitchen one for now (north face) but i might pop it on south (main bay windows which are massive ones) tho thats my living room and well not many ppl would stick plants on their windowsill there lol.

Edit:

Checked the pot more, its 2" high and about 2.5" wide. Looked under the pot i see dirt but no roots so im not sure if it needs a bigger pot just yet i duno.

I would say yes deffinetley a bigger pot, after all a bigger pot will certianly not do it any harm. my chillis were at a bit of a growth stop and took them out the pots i put them in 2 weeks previous and the roots were everywhere, but not out the bottom, since swapping them they have taken off again.

Also some plants roots dont necissarily go down, (Trees usualy do) but most plants of this nature go out the way aswell as down

To be honnest, the grow bags i got were hombases own cheapest and mines are cracking with just water and sun light,.

I would generaly go for something about 9" - 12" diamiter and about the same depth, you dont have to go crazy even an old indoor bin would do. If you want to give them Tomarite its up to you i havent used it so far but have it there incase.

I have heard old banana skins are good for toms to, but i dont fancy mouldy skins lying about esp if its in your house

Try Indoor Vegetables

Or Tomatoes Indoors

Can only try it, if you do decide to put them out doors i would suggest weathering them, simply pop out for the day and back in at night do this for a week and then you can get them outside all the time.

But remember you will need some form of cane to support it, Im using bamboo Canes that i got at Morrisons a pack of 20 were £1.49 and 1.2m long you also get packs of ten at 1.5m for £1.99 just now to tie them to the anes im using the food bag twist things like plastic coated wire and then just gradualy adjusting them.

It has a small cane when i bought it.

Btw i asked if it was determinate or not, the bloke hadn't a clue i think. I hope its determinate so its nice and manageably small.

Hmm, im not sure how to detect other than when it stops grownign and starts to flower, Possibly is but may just have the cane as standard, i would deffinetley rehome it in a bigger pot just make sure theres either a tray under it if ythe pot has holes or get ones that dont and just watch when you watter them

I watched 'How do that do that' or something on TV this morning and they had a commercial pepper grower showing how they grow things.

They use absolutely no soil - everything is grown on rockwall. They keep it damp and add the minerals in to make them shop perfect.

Interesting I thought :)
