GT200 GTX280/260 "official specs"

Temps are going to be a huge problem...the GT280 is 30% HOTTER than a 2900XT! Overclocking will require some major cooling solutions

To be truthful. My GTX is always hotter than what my 2900Pro ran at. Easily. I don't expect that to be much of a problem. I am a little concerned of the low shader clocks here though as that gives a good boost in some games when I up my shader clocks on my GTX. With the new specs though this is sounding a new beast so I'll hold judgement on anything until they are out.

:)

...but with a little bit of overclocking the GPU will easily draw 250-300w on its own. Dissipating that kind of heat coming from such a small and concentrated source is extremely hard, even with watercooling.

Isn't that more CPU limited though?

:D

Seriously, run sup com on a 79gt and an 88gtx with the same cpu and clocks, it'll still be about the same fps. (untill 1920+ res and aa are involved)

These new cards do look very nice on paper, i have rather thankfully come into a little bit of money recently too (god bless the national lottery!) But i can't see the gtx280 being any less than £450 on release day...

I can see them being well hot on the 65nm, seems strange to still use a process for a much more powerfull card that they are so desperately trying to get away from.

The clocks might not matter much, as they have more TMU's, ROP's, and the streams are supposed to have been redesigned to, so they are at least 50% faster as well supposedly, and theres also the 512bit bus which should help also.

Good point ;). Well, we'll get to find out soon enough :D.

Nvidia can only do same card pairing (GX2 can only be paired with another GX2), only ATi can do the mixing of cards (3870 can be paired with 3850 etc...)
