GT200 GTX280/260 "official specs"

Nvidia and it partners can only drop the 260/280 so far as the margins must be quite small if they going to compete with the 4870 as it meant to be costing more to make then the ati 4870.
So if nvidia drop their prices to near the 4870 for the 260 i would think ati would/could drop the 4870 again but that only a good thing for us.
unless we all think the 4870 is coming in too cheap and it will be more inline with the 260 if performance is close to 260.

You know someone is all over that though...heh

"I MUST HAVE IT SKEET SKEET SKEET!"

So the GTX seems to be offering roughly the throughput of a 9800GX2, only without the painful SLI issues? Sounds okay to me, and seems broadly in line with previous generations.

I think I will probably hang back and see what the 55nm cards have to offer, though.

I distinctly remember seeing a 7950GX2 or several sell for more than a 8800GTX. And I don't remember seeing any go for £200 at launch. But in the end I decided to get neither so it's not like I was looking around for a long time...

Well your remembering it wrong then, they were not as much as the 8800GTX or even the 8800GTS, 7950GX2 prices crashed when the 8800GTX/GTS were launched and for good reason.

But this shouldn't happen with the 9800GX2, there all Dx10 parts at the end of the day so prices shouldn't drop that quickly.

You'll be able to get like 3 and a half 4850's for that price... No idea what you'd do with half a graphics card, though.
