GT200 GTX280/260 "official specs"

It's going to be an interesting day on monday, can't wait.

Aye it really is. After the G80's success it really has set a bar of performance for ATI to keep up with as well as for Nvidia to maintain. The public demand! :D.

General D could be right in what he's saying. Maybe Nvidia and AMD have been putting out fake scores and lots of misleading articles to really create excitement about their product. With a dimmer outlook and an amazing turnaround at launch would create big hype for both camps. I don't believe this but it has merit :).

I damn well hope so actually. If the 4870 even comes close the the GTX280, but is nigh half the price, AMD won't even have an incentive to release R700. :(

Tis what I was wondering as well if 4850 is gonna be priced just tad more then the normal 8800GT, looks like its gonna just outpace it usualy the price point gives a quick indicator on performance from low-mid end range cards.

So that perhaps makes the 4870XT if its £200-250 a lot better then the 8800series cards, maybe able to compete or overtake the 280, will only see would be so laughable if Nvidia have to drop there flagship card by half just to compete with ATIs offerings :)

But somehow I doubt that will happen.... never does happen :(

Hm, it could indeed have foundation, for ATi at least. NordicHardware.com actually went as far as to imply that ATi were responsible for the 480 shader, unlocked shader clock rumour... But now we're seeing leaked slides which show 800 shaders, 1.2TFLOPS, etc. and it's all beginning to get very confusing. Especially with the GTX280 that looks like an absolute beast on paper flopping in some early benchmarks (okay, I would say it's a decent performer, not for the price, but it's certainly a bit flaccid at least).

 wtf are you bot to post bot about bots who posting bot gpu bots ?
I think someone learns to speak English or they'll get a slap on the bot bot!!

:)

On a serious note, has it struck anyone else that ATI's rumored prices seem to keep getting higher; ie 4870 prices nearer to Nvidia's 260 price?

I agree. A lot of people have lost faith in ATI due to the hiccup that was R600. I just sold my 2900Pro recently as it was gathering dust and I thought it was a decent card (past XT speeds) but even so, ATI users who had loved the X1900 series and were waiting for R600, started to warm up to the G80 variants for AA use and DX10 however useless it may be. For that fact ATI would really want to confuse all the haters and sparkle some life back into the red camp.

Not that Nvidia have a tendency to produce a lethargically alert approach or anything but avoiding that for now. Nvidia could be doing the same. An expected release of a driver on launch day could make all the difference. I don't think that it's going to be a flop or competing with the X2 3870.

Actually, not really, just the GTX260's price has gotten lower. The 4870 was rumoured for $349 at first, Fudzilla posted a $229 price tag which turned out to be for the 4850, then for a while $329, and now we're back up to $349 again.

Whereas the GTX260 was initially rumoured to be $449, but now appears to be $399. The 4850 seems to still be $229.

Though really, it's surprising how fast this has all turned around.

how can the mag give this card 97%?

total joke, and terrible increase in fps.

I think there just going on how ''good'' it is.

It's like giving a Pinoeer plasma that costs £10k a 10/10. Fair enough but its a bit steep right? I dont think there taking value for money into account with it. The tests are simply to find how it performs, and it's going to be the quickest thing ever, they just cant give it 100% as there always needs to be room for improvement :)

Least that is my theroy on it. The huge £450 RRP sticker derails that 97% mark enough as it is without them having a go at it.

but you have to admit that increase isnt nearly as good as we usually get.

I do, although only to an extent. I think the whole:

''This sucks the 8800GTX was so much better than anything before it''

Is somewhat of a unfair argument. 8800GTX was a step forward in more ways than one, most noteable was the jump of dx9 to dx10. Here we are a mid dx10 so I for one dont expect G80 scale leaps during a generation. It's only between generations you should look for that (imo). Consoles are a good example of this.

Also, I think Nvidia has set the bar low for the industry with it's lackluster 9 (8) series offerings, so if anything this is better than the jump we saw last time. ATi is guilty in this aswell to an extent.

Point is though now we can expect the mid range of 2008 to outpace the insane revolutionary ultra high end of late 2006, I think thats a huge leap tbh, and that is an improvment for more people. The few who can afford these high end cards doesnt really do much for most of the gamers out there.

thats not ture at all. nobody bought the 8800gtx's for their dx10 performance because there was no dx10 content out at the time. we bought them because they were absurdly fast, more than twice the speed of the next best single gpu in dx9. dx10 even right now has proven to be pretty much a non-event.

most noteable was the jump of dx9 to dx10.

'most notable' was the jump to programmable pixel pipelines. DX10 compatibility is of little consequence - just the support of longer shader paths.

Programmable pixel pipes are perhaps the biggest jump forwards (in the structure of the GPU) for 5 years at least.

Weren't the R580 cores already capable of that to an extent? I know they did Folding@home. GPGPU is a great step forward not just in graphics but affordable high-power computing as a whole, but really everyone bought 8 series cards because they were insanely fast.

I brought a 320 because ati was late and the 320 came out at 200

The reason we are now getting crappy graphics card upgrades is because there are NO games, plus the games we do get are buggy, stinky messes with a crap storyline. The graphics are becoming too central to games. Gameplay is where it's at.

It goes both ways though really. Developers have about exhausted what the 8 series can do, a bit of an extra performance incentive may help inspire a few devs. Besides, there's always Duke Nukem: Forever. :D
