GTX 1060

Doesn't matter about the pricing, as they will still fly off the shelves, and drop AMDs 480 sales like a stone.

I really hope AMD have raked in a good amount of sales in the couple of weeks they've had.

Slight problem with that analysis..

They have to be in-stock before they can fly anywhere :D
AMD have the price advantage and possible DX12 advantage so too early to hedge anything on the 1060 having a clear win ahead.

Its going to become fascinating waiting on the AIB reviews.

You seem to be ecstatic at the prospect. AMD must have done something to you dude.

£199 is really the sweet spot they should be at...
But that most likely that not going to happen with how crazy GPU prices are now....:(

Are these new GTX 1060 being aimed for replacing the GTX 960 ? (As the 4GB 960 cost around £160 to £180 )

Replacing the 960? Nope. In fact... the 380 wasn't even replaced by the 480. The evidence is clear as day: 380s are still being sold at the same prices they;ve always been listed for. Usually the older cards go on clearance as retailers get rid of them to make room for the new ones.

No... the 1060 is more likely a replacement for the 970 (pricing-wise). And considering one can get 980tis for under £400 and 980s (ápparently same performance as 1060) under £300... no wonder Nvidia changed it to 3GB and 6GB. 3GB for a 'cheaper 980' and 6GB for a '980 with 2 more GB VRAM'.

Of course... when it comes to names... well that's easy. But names are only just that... they can be misleading and confusing. I know a lot of folks have had arguments over whether the current 1000 series cards are mid-range or high-end. Price and performance are the only things we can be sure of and those are the 2 things we don't have accurate stats on for the 1060.

Remember that we enthusiasts are a minority of the Pc gaming scene, their are loads that play games that don't even know that you can put a graphics card in a PC to improve games.

Those people you mention, that are certainly not happy, are clearly not the same ones that, as I say are happy using a APU.

The original statement by foxeye, is just wrong, a GPU is a luxury item and it is most definitely not essential (absolutely necessary)

No hard feelings, gunna have to disagree once again bru...

Depends how you define a "PC gamer".

I would define that as someone who plays the kind of games you would find on a current-gen console, but instead plays them on a PC.

I'm specifically excluding people who only play browser or phone games. Yup, those people don't need a GPU.

When I say "PC gamer", however, I'm thinking about people who play Doom, Crysis, CoD, etc, etc, etc. Stuff that needs some manner of 3D acceleration.

Let's not kid ourselves, an APU has never cut it for those kinds of games.

And one of the folks I mentioned is on an APU, they can even just about run GTA5 (on lowest settings of course). They did have a dedicated GPU, but one of those terrible pointless GT730s.

When I was a teenager growing up, my PC didn't have dedicated graphics. Instead I mostly played older games (like Worms 2) on the odd occasion and had to make do with a handheld console instead. My PC gaming only really took off when I got a dedicated GPU (HD 6770 - the golden days of many decent GPUs sub-£200). But I admit that's just one person and many years ago.

I'd love to know how many people actually play regular PC games without dedicated GPUs. I know far too many people who don't, simply because their specs aren't up to scratch (GPU-wise).

If bru meant games like Minesweeper and Minecraft (without fancy shader mods)... then fair enough, he's probably right. In fact... I'm genuinely curious as to what the facts are. I may just make a strawpoll somewhere to try and gauge how many PC gamers actually don't have a GPU.

Do you realise what your disagreeing with me about?

I am saying that a Graphics card is not essential for playing PC games. Foxeye originally said that a graphics card was not a luxury it was essential.

Definition of essential

adjective
1.
absolutely necessary; extremely important.

noun
1.
a thing that is absolutely necessary.

I'm not saying that it isn't nice to have one, or anything I'm just saying that it is not essential, as we all know you can play lots of PC games without a discrete GPU, as many people on APU's do everyday.

Lol at people complaing about price. 2+ just from this page alone.

You don't complain at Audi selling the same specced car as Skoda or VW for 1.5 times the price for the same product (they are just wrapped up slightly differently).

It's your choice - just don't buy it.

These companies owe you nothing - and likewise you owe them nothing.

If you don't like it don't buy it - no one is forcing you. Buy secondhand if you haven't got the money. It's not rocket science.

Sadly common sense is lacking for many around here. They also have an anti-Nvidia agenda that's as clear as daylight.

Heh. How many PC gamers do you know that only play 2D games like Terraria?

I guess you have the odd browser game addict, or someone who only plays games from the 90s in an emulator.

But this is the GPU forum. The kind of "PC gamers" that we have here want to play Doom, CoD, Battlefield, the list goes on.

A GPU is absolutely essential for people who truly are PC gamers. You can play Terraria on a phone/tablet. Same goes for all the browser games. I wouldn't call those people PC gamers - it just doesn't feel right.

But really I'm not here to argue about the importance of a GPU. It's such a bizarro conversation to be having.

We got into this because I said "super expensive GPUs will push people out of PC gaming onto consoles." You said "well, actually you don't even need a GPU to be a PC gamer."

Frankly, everybody knew what I meant. The idea that people who want to play Doom will start playing Minecraft instead, if they can't afford a PC GPU, is such a contrived argument. PC gamers who can't afford the cost of modern PC hardware will move to a console, in all likelihood.

What's interesting is that it seems its the same bunch who go everywhere shouting how everyone has an agenda against AMD and then they're everywhere in the Nvidia discussions, complaining about prices, products, speed, memory, insulting everyone and generally kicking up a fuss about everything.

it does make one wonder what kinda of agenda these people have and if they seriously don't have anything better to do with their lives like for example go and play some games with their preferred cards.

No they don't, they can be on pre-order as well to drop AMDs sales like a stone.

Prior to responding I think you enjoy a good ole windup eh. ;)
So lets get this right based on your last few posts.

Your opinion takes the assumption the 1060 is not only going to be much better than the RX480 in general but also that it is worth waiting longer for and paying more for the additional expected performance it has. You can also determine this before a single review and are confident AMD sales will not just be reduced but actually hammered and drop like a stone.

Based on your insight Gibbo must be really concerned now that his claim of 2000 pre ordered Sapphire Nitro cards (world exclusive) are now not going to sell. Over 700 people with pre-orders for it according to your mindset will see many wanting to cancel. They will want to now pre-order the 1060 instead. They wont mind paying more as to you the price difference also doesn't factor or matter in what is the most price conscious sector of the market.

I think the reality is plenty of people see the RX480 as a good enough card for 1080p gaming with all the new features. Some may even want an AMD card for a change or see AMD have decent success with it. The Nitro and other AIB could be great GPUs for £250. So surely the 1060 needs to be a good deal better to have much impact on their sales, never mind kill off the RX480 as you amusingly presume.

Many people are viewing DX12 performance as a major factor. Much attention will be on this I suspect by reviewers doing comparisons. It really could be a close call to determine the best all-round card. Potentially the other side of your views is that Nvidia could have a more expensive product one that isn't that much better overall in various games. The lead it may have is limited and could also fare worse in DX12. By these factors, Nvidia potentially could have a card that might find it difficult to outsell the RX480 never mind bury it.

Look forward with interest as a future buyer but for me it is too early to say which I will buy but I cant ignore the issue of DX12 performance.

Interesting 3DMark score for a 1060 a with and OC vs a 480 with an OC

http://www.3dmark.com/compare/fs/9202637/fs/9188962#

Better hope that's not an indication of what's to come..... especially at the rumoured price

Videocardz said the boost clock for the GTX1060 is 1.709GHZ and that link has it running at over 1.9GHZ - the aftermarket RX480 cards are meant to be run at 1.325GHZ or 1.35GHZ,so that means according to that link an aftermarket RX480 is still faster??

Yes the 1060 is overclocked to over 1900mhz and the 480 is OCd to 1350mhz and the 480 is roughly 8.2% faster..
