Halal Food - WTF?

How do Jews feel about eating Halal meat? How do Muslims feel about eating Kosher meat?

As long as it is labelled everyone is free to choose to eat it or not. I would be perfectly happy with 90% of meat being Halal as long as it said so on the label.

Dont know about Jews eating halal meat but ive eaten kosher meat in the past without any real issues. I will still eat it if its available ie theres no halal but kosher products. Theres absolutely nothing wrong with muslims eating kosher meat, absolutely nothing wrong with it other than the idiots that preach we shouldnt eat 'jewish' meat. But then im not one to pay any attention to them as it is because their interpretation of islam is a bit too extreme for my liking.

Obviously this is my own opinion and i dont claim to speak for all muslims.

You were seemingly struggling to understand why people would want animals to be killed humanely? As much as some people might have trouble with understanding the concept - not all people who eat meat want animals to suffer or to be kept inhumanely... there are plenty of people out there (myself included) who are not comfortable with battery farming for example.

The fact that an animal is going to die regardless doesn't mean that concerns over the way it should die are any less relevant than concerns over the way it is kept and treated during its life.

No, there is nothing 'humane' about the killing of an animal for what is a frivolous purpose (we are omnivores, we do not need to eat meat), no matter what the method of slaughter. Humane would be not to kill the animal at all. I'm not being pedantic either, what difference does it make if the animal is killed with a bolt to the head, or has its throat cut, or stunned first? It doesn't make any amends.

Am I lacking compassion? What compassion is there to be had in killing an animal in order to eat it? Can't you see the hollowness in concern over how an animal will be killed?

Battery farming is not the same issue at all. I would say it is more relevant, as methods of farming and treatment during an animals life affects the quality of the produce.

I hunt wild deer. Legally you are only allowed to hunt them with a rifle, 5.56 calibre or over. That means a small wound, and the deer have to be tracked by the blood trail, sometimes for a mile or more, before they collapse and they get their throat cut.
I hunt them either with a powerful crossbow (close up) which is illegal, but results in a pretty instant death - a good broadhead tip on a good crossbow leaves a big hole.
Or, I use a 12ga. shotgun loaded with slugs. Again, illegal. But it goes in the deer and out the other side, leaving a big hole - they might jump once, then fall down stone dead. I cut their throats anyway as part of getting them ready for butchering, but they are very dead by then.
Which is better?

Do take your rolleyes and kindly shove it where the sun dont shine;).

As for my opinion that halal slaughter is more humane, i believe it is...whether or not you dont think it is, well again that is your opinion.

You made the claim that its not humane...please show me unrefutable evidence that is the case. Show me proof that the animal suffers from horrendous pain with scientific facts and numbers please. Until then you are talking complete and utter BS.

That is the problem really - your view is simply based on belief, its irrelevant and a bit ignorant. You could try reading the thread instead of asking for things that have already been posted:

http://www.newscientist.com/article/dn17972-animals-feel-the-pain-of-religious-slaughter.html

The researchers then showed that the pain originates from cutting throat nerves, not from the loss of blood, suggesting the severed nerves send pain signals until the time of death. Finally, they stunned animals 5 seconds after incision and showed that this makes the pain signal disappear instantly.

I'd go back to my hypothetical situation - you're about to die - would you like the brutal method of death or the less brutal method?

I don't see why you're still struggling to understand that some people eat meat and still care about animals.

Ok... obviously I would like the less brutal method... I don't know what you're getting at? There is no context to your situation- what am I being killed for?

I do understand that some people eat meat and care about animals. But when it comes to the slaughterhouse, I don't understand why. It's illogical and irrational. These people happily eat meat and have no qualms just because the animal was killed 'humanely'? It's a false sympathy.

I think even the "idiots" that you refer to should have the choice in what they eat.

I don't see it as any different to sneaking in meat products into veggie meals. I personally think being a veggie is bonkers. However I can imagine how hacked off a veggie would be if they discovered the veggie burger they had just eaten was made with pig fat for binding it (or anything along those lines)

It doesn't matter... its purely hypothetical. The point is that if we're accepting that an animal is going to be killed one way or another - making sure the animal is going to be killed in the way that causes the least pain and suffering to the animal does tend to matter to someone who is concerned about that sort of thing.

If you're able to accept that people can care about animals and eat meat then you should be able to see that they will care about the way in which animals are treated - both their general living conditions and the way they are slaughtered. Tbh.. this is potentially side tracking as I'm pretty sure lots of non meat eaters are opposed to halal (without stunning the animals) - RSPCA is along with other organisations... its a general animal welfare issue rather than meat eaters being fussy.

I get that it's a human sentiment to feel compassion etc. What I'm saying is that when you're already committing the ultimate act of cruelty to an animal, i.e. killing it for meat, then it's a false kind of sympathy/compassion. It doesn't make it any better.

Do meat eaters feel guilty for eating meat? No. I know I don't anyway. So why do some feel guilty or have objections about how the animal was killed?

I know and accept that people do care. I just don't see why a meat eater should care.

I'm not saying they should care I'm stating that some people do care.

I care for the same reasons I care about battery farming etc... I don't see an issue with wanting animals we eat to have a decent existence and swift end involving minimal suffering.

I always thought the blood letting on deers was something to do with toxins in their blood? the ways you mention may be illegal but surely the animal suffers less.

Hey, I heard Chinese people like eating in Chinese restaurants, they eat all sorts of **** like chickens feet, dirty *******. What do you reckon?

When the vast majority of Chinese are peasants, is it surprising they eat virtually every part of the animals they kill? I reckon you are over privileged and clueless.

Um, or I was being sarcastic and trying to explore the depths of that guy's ignorance.

I would like to make a few points:

1) People who think places like KFC are selling halal because of pressure, political correctness etc are being naive!! It's business pure and simple.

2) Halal and Haraam, basically mean lawful and unlawful. Dhabiah is the method of slaughter which makes the meat lawful for consumption. If an animal is stunned then slaughtered the vast majority of Muslims would consider this halal.

3) Christians and Jews are considered by the Quran to be "People of the book", therefore in principal if a Muslim was given meat by Jew or a Christian it would be Halal to them.

4) Whilst some of you are horrified by the process of slaughtering meat in a halal way, have any of you looked at a video where an animal is slaughtered in a regular way?? It's still horrific!!

5) Islam is a religion not a country, so for all of the people saying send them back home, the UK is home! A Muslim can be any colour and any nationality, if a Muslim breaks the law in this country then they should be dealt with by the law!!

Does it have any effect on the quality of the meat?

Halal chicken thighs are almost half the price in Costco compared to regular chicken thighs, from looking the only noticeable difference is halal is skin-off, bone-in where as the other is skin-on, de-boned.

I've bought it because of the price and convenience and as long as the slaughter process doesn't have any impact on the quality of the product it doesn't really bother me how it dies.

Of course it is great that there is choice and one can decide what chicken to buy based on their own preference.

Cheaper production methods bear lower costs meaning you pay less sure.

The meat could have been imported from say Ireland where there us no necessity to stun halal meat making it a, much more cruel, b, cheaper.
