I was a bit bored yesterday and I measured with a tape measure the two HDMI cables I have. I previously thought that both cables were 2m each, but one is indeed 2m and the other is 1.5m. I'm quite surprised that a 0.5m difference in length makes so much difference. Maybe the shorter cable has better shielding or something on top of it being shorter. Anyway this prompted me to order the shortest HDMI cable I think I can get away with (0.75m). I begrudgingly paid about £15 extra for a supposedly higher quality cable than the standard one in case it's not just the length of the cable that matters. Fingers crossed when it arrives it will do 1080p perfectly and at the very least 720p perfectly (most games seems to run at 720p max anyway).
That saying 720p with the current cable I have isn't that bad. I can only really see bits of green snow when pure black appears on the screen, so it is bearable but not ideal. I also went out and bought an official PS3 component cable yesterday to see how that compared. There's no green snow at all at 1080p which is great, but for some reason the monitor seems to cut quite a bit of the picture off. It seems to cut the sides of the picture off from pictures over component. Now you would think that the sides of the 16:9 picture are being cropped and the resulting picture stretched vertically to fit the 16:10 display. But that doesn't seem to be the case as the cropped picture still seems to be 16:9. I didn't really look at it too much but I guess the bottom and/or top of the picture is being cropped as well (resulting in a zoom like effect being displayed on the monitor). Why it does this is beyond me and I couldn't find any options to change this either. Good job I agreed with the person in the shop that I could return the cable if it didn't work...
I might try getting a HDMI to DVI cable at some point and try that if the HDMI cable I have on order does not work. However my PC uses the DVI socket at the moment so this would also involve some sort of DVI switch as well. But seeing as I can't seem to find one that looks half decent for a price I'm willing to pay and no guarantee that the switch won't cause no problems either, I am in no rush to try this...
