Thats because its a direct copy of DoTA - a very popular warcraft 3 mod.
For my money League of Legends is a more enjoyable game but I never played DoTA so what do I know
This game really is great, and it's true there is a steep learning curve and it's inevitable some team mates won't take kindly to newcomers, but it's worth the persaverence, well polished game.
It's also generally more fun if you play with a group of people!

There is currently a major item dupe exploit in hon, they are fixing it soon apparently.
