How to overclock a 7850 past 1050MHz?

Great, now at least theres a baseline voltage increase ppl here can go by, thanks for posting. :) assuming they're refering to reference cards where the voltage is supposed to be the same across all brands.

that was in regards to the sapphire OC edition, so i'm not sure if it is the same for other cards, but likely so.

So I'm guessing anything below 1.25v be it Sapphire, MSI or Asus cards will be safe right? ;) Anyway, I believe most people OC only when they're gaming? Since OCing when idle is redundant.

your card downclocks at idle just like your cpu, so you can leave the overclocks active 24/7 or not. either way they will run at the exact same speed and voltage at idle.

just to note, sapphire tech may have suggested 1.25v, but degradation still exists even under safe voltages. my e6750 cpu was OC'd at safe voltages for 2 years, then suddenly would not hold that OC no matter the voltage after those 2 years. so just keep in mind you can run 1.25v nonstop if you want (according to sapphire), but that certainly doesn't mean your card will last indefinitely at those voltages. remember, the GPU core is only one temperature you have to be concerned with. the voltage modules also get hotter the more juice you give them.

Gotta love all the armchair engineers on the net who think they know "stuff." So my friend, how long in the semi conductor business have you been to be able to confirm this nugget of dis-information?

Might be worth reading up on the TDP controls these new boards too...... The VRMS cannot run beyond their specs without hardware modding anymore.

My driver just crashed randomly and recovered when I just on my computer and went into facebook, first time experiencing this after reverting back from 1200/5800 at 1.16v. Using a MSI 7850 OC at stock 900/120 1.075v. Will this affect anything? Had AMD overdrive in CCC disabled and only installed Asus GPU Tweak.

Update from my end.
Got the MSI changed to a Sapphire. Hopefully will be shipping out tomorrow (apparently, these things are selling like hot-cakes and today's stock is already allocated).

Anyone interested in an unboxing/fitting/testing thread?

Not realy! but this might give you an idea of the Temps from your soon to be new card under load, (depending on your case) , top one tends to run 10C warmer than bottom one which is pretty typical in crossfire config. Prefer a quiet PC so have set the fans to max out @ 55% which is inaudible over the other case fans..
Hope you get soon!

Huh? I think in summary all I said was, "run maximum recommended voltage at your own risk." I have done it before with other components, and it did not work for long. It seems completely plausible that it could happen with these cards too, especially considering they haven't been out long and nobody has really had a chance to slowly overvolt one yet. Since you seem to disagree, perhaps you will be the first test subject in that category :)

I put an order in for the ASUS HD7850 DCUII, but I had to cancel after hearing that the type of cooler has problems when placed in a vertical orientation. Does anyone know which version of the card will best suit the vertical orientation of a Silverstone FT02 case?

Cheers

Anyone?

Firstly the graphics card has power draw strictly limited, the second the card draws more than its rated power it throttles. Manufacturers have been doing this for a while now as it protects the gpu and more importantly the vrms.

Secondly default vid is 1138mv, there's no way 1250mv will be enough to cause degradation, they just wouldn't run the silicon that close to its limits at stock.

This is different from cpu's where overzealous mobo manufacturers allow you to set potentially dangerous settings.

Been ages since I've posted here, is it still the same process to overclock the card?

1. Install Asus GPU Tweek first.
2. Install Drivers without Catalyst Suite
3. Reboot
4. Overclock

I don't think it matters what order you do the installs.
I installed 12.4 drivers with CCC and up to date CAPS
GPU Tweak, enabled advanced etc and that was that.

I think the few that experienced difficulties made me a bit weary but was simple as. Have fun and let us know what you get out of it!

This.

Drivers -> CAPS -> ASUS Tweak -> Advanced Mode -> Unlock Range

Jobs a good'un.

Does installing CAPS make a difference?

Things may have changed since last time but installing ccc didn't unlock advanced mode iirc, but if that isn't the case then I'll just install

Drivers with CCC -> CAPS -> ASUS Tweak -> Advanced Mode -> Unlock Range

I've always had CCC installed and never had a problem with unlocking TBH.

I don't touch the Overdrive section and just let ASUS Tweak handle it all.

Then once I have my OC set up I just tell ASUS tweak to remember the settings and thats it.

You don't have to have ASUS Tweak starting on boot or anything like that, once the settings are saved it'll remember and run your OC settings even without ASUS Tweak being loaded.

No the CAPS are just the latest game profiles. They should have no impact on your ability to OC but may improve a particular game you play.

doesn't seem to be the case with me. when my computer boots up and gpu tweak loads it shows stock clocks. i have to manually hit the "1" preset to get my overclocks running. i've checked in gpu-z to make sure that is the case also.

do you think if i turn off gpu tweak loading when i log into windows will change that?

You need to tick the box in the advanced page that says 'remember these settings', can't remember the exact wording. But if you tick that it'll load whatever your settings are when you last closed it.

Ok guys, I'm about to go for a 7850 but I don't know which to go for out of the Sapphire and MSI brands. The thing is, it will be going in a FT02 case, which positions the GFX card in a vertical orientation. Do any of these cards have problems with this type of orientation? And is it worth the extra £15 for the MSI version?

Cheers.
