** HP Compaq Mini 311c-1010SA Intel Atom N270 ION 11.6" Netbook @ £314.99 inc VAT **

Whats the best way to look after the battery on this thing? I've not had a laptop in years! Is it best to take the battery out when it's plugged in or does this not affect them anymore? Any tips for making the battery life last longer too?

Leave it in all the time, trickle charging is the best way to keep it in shape but when out and about do use it to its fullest, don't just get down to 50% then charge, let it get to 10% then charge to full, keeps the cells in optimal shape.

Lithium Ion 101 !

My fan is also always on. There is an option in the bios called "fan always on" which is on by default, but I didn't like to change it. If you experement let us know how you get on!

The touchpad is the weakpoint of the laptop really, but you do get used to it and once you have it setup to your liking it works quite well, just takes a bit more getting used to than some other touchpads.

Thanks for the feed back,
Didn't know that about the fan!
i will play around with the track pad settings....

I have just installed win7 and the ion graphics chipset isn't being detected!?
i downloaded & installed both the chipset and vga driver from HP's website. (correct os selected)
the device manager doesn't show any issues but when i check the advance options in the resolution tab (desktop) is says generic graphics 14MB. the rating is 1.0 aswell?

cheers

That is the one yes, over in the states they also get the HP branded version, we get the Compaq branded version as denoted by the "c".

Very nice it looks.

Can't wait to get mine :)

No reason why you should not be able to :) You could with Vista and all other OEM OS versions :)

There's also a video of the same guy playing COD4 on it although in low, still looks good and runs smooth by the looks of it.

I won't be FPS gaming on it but will be most likely playing alternative STEAM games I have like Brade and so on which should be perfect for this kind of system :)

Is the Atom N270 64bit compatible? I want to put 2GB stick ram in there and a copy of 64bit Win7 premium :)

Well I sold a laptop last week for £265 and the money should be sent to me next week sometime so if that all clears through on time I'll have my 311c by end of the week. I'll probably order a 2GB stick of DDR3 memory sometime before then though so all gets installed and ready on the same day.

Don't know if you get various colours though, a Q for the others :p

I have a copy of Win7 Retail home premium which is on ebay at the moment, if it does not sell then I'll just keep it and put it on the netbook else I'll use an upgrade edition that is due to come in the post soon from MS - the retail only cost me £45 though so I'm kind of hoping it doesn't sell so I can indeed keep it for the 311c instead but the money it sells for would easily go toward the extra ram and the few £tens extra from the £265 the old laptop sold for :p

Got mine for £45 when they where first put on pre-order (arrived on the 19th as well) thanks Competitor!

BTW does anyone have any idea about the graphics driver issue?
cheers

£45 was the pre-order price a while ago. That is what I paid for mine also.

Though the netbooks dont have dvdrom drives you can use usb external drives to install from.

I have to say that the matte screen on this Samsung N510 is so much better than the glossy screen on the Compaq. The Compaq is a fair bit cheaper though I guess.

Very interested to know how well Football Manager runs on this, swithering between a full blown laptop or a netbook for now and desktop build next year.
Currently living out of a hotel for business 4 days a week so would love something portable for movies, music and internet but also with some basic game playing capability, only recent thing I want to play is Football Manager, anything else is fairly old like Red Alert 2 or Half Life 1
