** HP Compaq Mini 311c-1010SA Intel Atom N270 ION 11.6" Netbook @ £314.99 inc VAT **

I decided against the HP in the end.

Went for the Toshiba T130-11J

Dual Core Pentium CULV 1.3ghz
Intel GMA 4xxxx series gprahics chip (not as good as the 9400m)
4gb of ram
250gb hdd
Wireless n
64bit Windows 7 Home Premium
13" screen 1360x780
8.5 hours on the battery so far with couch surfing and some work and youtube vids.

While not exactly a netbook, the spec and size/weight of it is excellent. Suited my needs more than the hp would have.
Costs a fair bit more than the HP 311c though

Your not the only one, see HERE

I never use hibernate, prefer to use SLEEP.

Just disable hibernate and do the same: In an elevated command prompt, type powercfg -h off and press Enter.

Glad I am not the only one, I searched the HP and Compaq forums to no avail last night looking for a proper solution. Personally I use sleep on my home PC's as it is negligible power use, on a laptop though it is a choice between draining or not draining the battery whilst not in use. My previous Dell Mini 9 seemed to have a fairly heavy use on Sleep mode and would regularly finish the battery off by the time you got home if put to sleep on low power earlier in the day.

Very different product. Mini 311 is really suited to people who want a very portable machine, capable of the odd game and HD Movies for same price as a budget laptop. What you have got is clearly going to beat it in any area that doesn't come down to graphics chipset, and costs more accordingly.

Personally I went from a 12" Core2Duo laptop with similar specs to yours too a Dell Mini 9. I found that a 9" screen size and the 8GB SSD was too restrictive though so have now moved onto this Mini 311. For me this cheaper system is better than the Core2Duo system was as I had no real need for the processor power whilst more portable and better graphics are used on a daily basis.

That's interesting, I use a 12" Dell D410 at the moment which is wonderful in all aspects APART FROM screen res (1024*768). It is my main machine though, I have no other.

The only thing I'd really miss I think is the pointing-stick/trackpoint/nipple/nub/wotsit.

I'm pretty sure that you can configure most hardware to 'turn off' in SLEEP mode under the power 'Advanced Settings', this should save quite a bit of battery power. Best to just create a new 'custom power plan' with your settings and see what power is draining when SLEEP is activated for a period of time, say overnight, as a test.

What errors do you get?

Hibernate works perfectly for me. As does sleep!

I've been using AVAST 5 BETA though and I think it's been taxing the CPU more as I randomly see battery usage drop 6% in a a few seconds for example.

Either that or it's the modified ION drivers which allowed DX10.

Have installed MSE instead of AVAST now so will monitor from here on.

I'm now getting random disconnects from WiFi and reconnecting when it feels like it?

Hopefully my 'N' card will be here soon, but it's rather irritating. I take it that the Bluetooth must be coupled with the WiFi on same card? Hope so, as I don't need Bluetooth, and this may be the cause of this problem, hopefully lol....

Bluetooth is not the same card as wifi though is it, wifi card is individual.

I updated the BIOS and get no disconnects, perhaps it's worth trying a different wireless channel on your router or use WPA2 with AES instead - or connect to another wifi network and see if it disconnects then too.

There are rules??!

The battery issue was due to avast 5 - I was watching videos in the bath earlier and the battery remained at +90% from 100% so all is well!

Troubelshooters in here please...

From my earlier post re. my problems installing XP Pro...the BSOD message is

"A problem has been detected and windoews has been shut down to prevent damage to your computer"

If this is the first time....

Check for viruses on our computer. Remove an newly installed hdds or hdd controllers. Run CHKDSK /F to check for hdd corruption and then restart your computer.

This happens when booting from USB stick and USB DVD-RW.
Any ideas?

At best they're £15 dearer but I chose OCUK because of the fast next day delivery (and free too). Something not as set in stone with other shops...

Found a Sidebar Gadget that is on the Windows Gadget Gallery called Computer Status that suits the 311c (or any netbook) nicely :D

SystemStatusGadget.png

Clicking the symbols for ram etc loads task manager/resource monitor among other cool things. The play button has a option to play radio 1 or many other stations.
