** HP Compaq Mini 311c-1010SA Intel Atom N270 ION 11.6" Netbook @ £314.99 inc VAT **

I'm using a 2GB Corsair CM3X2GSD1066 PC3-8500 SO-DIMM and it works great for a total of 3GB ram, 2.75GB usable. The ram always runs at 1:2 so if you are not going to overclock then getting 1333MHz is a waste of time.

Saying that mine is running at 165 MHz FSB (330/1320 MHz RAM, 1975 MHz CPU) with no issues under Windows 7.

Also upgraded to a 320GB WD Blue, not for speed as it's about the same as the Seagate stock drive, but simply because I had it spare and thought I could use the extra space! It's a lot noisier than the stock drive though!

New benchmarks @ 165 MHz FSB:

Read: 5115 MB/s
Write: 3507 MB/s
Copy: 3051 MB/s
Latency: 72.1 ns

Stock speeds with 3GB - http://forums.overclockers.co.uk/showpost.php?p=15302270&postcount=640

Read: 4110 MB/s
Write: 2840 MB/s
Copy: 2485 MB/s
Latency: 83.2ns

Performance in applications and games also scales accordingly. The CPU is defiantly holding everything else back and every extra MHz it can get helps, but that extra memory bandwidth speeds things up too.

This things a little beast! Very happy :)

What is the Fan noise like? have seen some reviews and some make an issue of it.

It is noticeably louder than my NC10. I've got it set to always on in the bios and you can change that, but it really doesn't bother me when working on it. When in a silent room where you're sleeping it can be a bit annoying though. For day to day stuff unless you're really anal about noise I don't find it an issue - definitely quieter than a normal full size laptop fan.

Overclock the 311, guide HERE

Working and tested by many members, so far I am stable at 1900mhz :D

Great link, I managed to get mine to 1.9Ghz stable too!

How are people getting on with Windows 7 on this? Lots of people are complaining but I find it great!

Works a treat although I'm having problems getting my Microsoft Bluetooth mouse working on it. I can't figure it out and it's driving me nuts! Works just fine in XP on it. Anyone got any suggestions?

Also, I'm thinking about whacking an SSD in mine shortly, I started a thread here before finding this one. Has anyone tried this? If so what's the difference like? Would love to hear some first hand experience before I splash out for one.

I got one of these yesterday, the 1030sa, loving it so far.

Does anyone know whether its worth temporarily installing W7 on it with the standard 1GB ram, while I save up for the 3 GB upgrade.

Also has anyone run BBC iPlayer HD content on it smoothly?

1. Yes. I had it running W7 Pro x86 for a while, while I saved for a 2GB RAM upgrade. It ran well but obviously, runs better with 3GB installed.
2. I can't really comment here, as my connection isn't good enough for streaming of BBC HD. However, it handles YouTube HD well, with Flash 10.1 Beta.

Can anyone please confirm for me that this netbook is upgradable to 2 or 3gb of memory?

I would like to buy one tomorrow, but only if the memory is upgradable.

Also, can anyone confirm which design is on the lid? the HP logo with the swirls, or the Compaq logo?

Cheers.
Andy.

You can upgrade to 2GB by buying a 1GB stick, or 3GB by buying a 2GB stick. Not sure what design is on the one from Overclockers. 1GB can be found for about £15 or less and 2GB for about £40.

is that certain though? I was reading a few pages back that people were emailing HP and being told that 1gb was the max that the UK version could take. Has this changed in the UK now?

ok after looking around, i've figured out that the 311c-1000 series does not allow you to upgrade the memory, so you're stuck with 1gb. the 311c-1100 series does allow you to upgrade the memory to a maximum of 3gb.
Is the 311c-1100 series the one that ocUK are selling?

Hmm...just checked and mines the Compaq Mini 311c-1030SA Notebook PC (VJ581EA) which definitely takes 2GB, although the overclockers one is the Mini 311c-1010SA (VJ555EA#ABU)

I didn't realise there was a difference, I'm sure I read a few posts earlier in the thread from people who put 2GB into the one from Overclockers.

it would be nice if someone could confirm for me that the one ocUK are selling, will take an extra 2gb.

OcUK is stocking the 1010sa - this has the the Compaq 'Q' on it, with a faint pattern.
It is therefore the 1000 series, and it CAN be upgraded to 3gb.

You've figured wrong, not sure where you found your info.
I may be wrong, as I have the 1030sa, the only difference being the 3G adapter afaik.

I had a look on the HP forums and I'm pretty sure it's just a limitation provided by intel to the manufacturers as a maximum RAM limit to include with the standard netbook. You can still add extra RAM up to 2GB.

Linky

ah i see what you're saying. It's not really a limitation in the hardware of the netbook, its just a fake limitation, specified by HP, because they are not allowed to sell netbooks with XP with anymore than 1gb of memory.

well, i'll probably take the plunge tomorrow, if my money is in the bank, and get one of these, along with a 2gb stick and maybe a samsung external dvd-rw

You wont regret it mate, its a great bit of kit :)

i hope not, I just sold my Acer Aspire 6935G to get an ion netbook. I was in desperate need of something a lot lighter.

My original plan was to get a Samsung N510, but its well overpriced, at nearly £400, compared to the HP Mini 311, considering the 311 is a better all round performer.
