** HP Compaq Mini 311c-1010SA Intel Atom N270 ION 11.6" Netbook @ £314.99 inc VAT **

If it turns up and is going spare I would happily take it off your hands :D. Have you installed with one aerial or two and how are you finding performance?

Awful!!

Haven't had the time to fully test the card before this, but there are issues :( Dunno if any of these stem from PCI/PCIe BIOS locks/unlocks?

1. Card works and connects OK, but only showing 54mps as connection, although hovering over wireless connection shows 'n' mode?

2. Wireless button is unresponsive when turned off, it will not turn on again once pressed.

3. System locks on shut down, nothing will suffice, except for pressing the power button to turn off.

Annoying and irritating, to say the least :(

Initially, after card install, no drivers were picked up. I then connected 311 to Ethernet and Windows Update picked up drivers and installed OK.

Looks like it's coming back out - DAMN!!

Just got one of these delivered yesterday, got the 1030 model for a shade under £250 which I think was a pretty good deal.

First impressions are good and it seems like a good wee machine. Has anyone tried any games on it? Was thinking of getting a few games to stick on it for when i'm away on business and make use of the current steam sale.

Apparently it is very capable game wise, relative to other netbooks. I have seen videos of Left 4 Dead 2 running with a playable framerate, HL2 etc work although obviously only at the lowest settings.

Overclock it and add a 2GB stick of 1333 RAM and it should be able to play lots of older games comfortably.

couple of days in and im liking the machine, although the spongy keyboard is a bit of a disappointment (saying that typing isnt an issue, just me being picky)

Is the overclocking fairly safe?

any particular type of ram? as i notice that according to crucial there is 1333 and 1066 ram do they both not need to be the same speed? and if so how can i find out as cpuz doesnt tell me?

In general people recommend the 1333 RAM, I assume that the RAM soldered on is DDR3 1333. Apparently it helps the graphics card run better as it uses system memory.

Check myhpmini.com for their overclocking guide in the forums. Lots of people have overclocked to 1.80ish Ghz safely, and you can unlock your Ion LE chip to convert it to a full Ion with DX10.

I am still battling with myself over whether I should get this or spend more on a capable laptop, as my current one is dying a slow, cooked death.

Is anyone having problems running any games on the mini when using windows 7?

I was going to upgrade from XP but unsure whether too now as i've read a few things about gaming problems in Win 7 and want to continue using my games I have via steam which all run great at the moment on XP.

Cheers

Most people report a drop of 5-10 frames under windows 7, you mightn't think that is bad but when you only have 20-25 frames to begin with its massive!

Stick to XP. Windows 7 would be better for everyday stuff as its nicer to use etc, but XP is better for games. There have been various theories on why, whether its windows 7 new kernal using more system resources, or the change in direct sound in windows 7 etc etc bust basically no one knows why. It seems to be more intensive on the CPU and when its an Atom you can't afford any more intensity on it because its that weak anyway. CPU intensive games suffer more, eg Source games

I have just bought the mini 311c-1030sa and am looking to upgrade it to 2GB or maybe 3GB. The 1GB ram module i bought did not work. It was a Ocz ddr3 pc8500 204 pin 1066mhz. The bios recognised the increase but the OS (xp) will not load. From another thread i understand someone else with ocz memory is having problems too. I have mailed hp twice regarding memory upgrades and they seem like they dont know what they are talking about. One of them even said that the two banks have 512mb each! dont think they realise there is 1GB soldered in and a spare slot! Can anyone please confirm which 2GB module will definitely work with this model because I dont want to buy another stick and not have it work again

I have upgraded the memory with Crucial 2GB 204-pin SODIMM DDR3 PC3-8500 (CT25664BC1067) which works great. It is specced to run at 1066 with CL=7 but also has SPD timmings for 1333.

I have also switched the WLAN card for a HP Broadcom BCM94322 which gives wireless-N and OS X compatibility. This is very easy to fit and as it only requires two aerials it is a straight swap. The only disadvantage is that you lose bluetooth.

Dual booting Windows 7 and OS X takes a bit of work to setup but it works great.
