HP LP2475w, IPS 24" Official Thread! (Now Available from OcUK)

I finally got a chance to have a look at the screen. A friend of mine got one and we were testing it yesterday. We set up two monitors in clone mode, the LP2475w and the LP2465 (the model the 2475 has come to replace, a nice S-PVA based screen). Both monitors were calibrated (he did that before I drop by, but I could see the screens at default settings and with different profiles).

I will focus in the things I didn't like and made me decide to keep waiting for a better monitor. Don't get me wrong, the LP2475w is nice and has a good price. It may be OK or even great for some people. My advice is to try to test it before buying or buy from a place where you can return it if you are not satisfied. Andj yes, I admit we are very picky.

Problems found:

Bad default settings. The difference with and without calibration was like night and day. Also, they should pack sunglases with the monitor or warn you that the default bright setting can make you blind. Maybe it was his unit, I don't know. Anyway, this was easily fixed.

Useless sRGB preset. The OSD preset for sRGB color is useless. I don't know what it does, it changes the image slightly, but it has nothing to do with sRGB.

Bad looking fonts. They looked OK in Gnu/Linux and passable on Windows after tweaking with ClearType Tuner. The fonts on the LP2465 looked way better. It may not bother everyone, but it was a problem for me.

Color accuracy. Another win for the LP2465 with sRGB images, and by a large margin. Oversaturated colors by default and much worse, It was impossible to setup the LP2475w to display images in sRGB with accurate colors (the LP2465 was amazing in this area). No surprises here, an 8 bit wide gamut panel suffers when shrinking its color space, but I didn't think the difference will be that evident. It looks like you can make the LP2475w look good in sRGB, but not accurate. This may not be a problem for many people, but it's there. Also, banding was evident in gradient test images in sRGB. The LP2465 had banding also if the settings of RGB color and contrast were changed from their defaults, but it was less wild. Movies suffered from the same problems as images do.

Dirty white. Well, all LCDs I've seen suffer from it to some extent, but it was a bit more annoying in the LP2475w.

It was better than the LP2465 in other areas: no color shifting (the 2465 is S-PVA and suffers from it, being this the reason I didn't buy it), less ghosting, no noticeable inverted ghosting (it is really bad with some colors in the 2465, movig a browser window of hardforum up and down, for example).

I think I'll wait and see if the Hazro fixes its issues or if something new comes up.

Can this hp screen go down too a really low contrast/brightness ?

I tend too have my TFTs around 20/20 seems easiest on my eyes and just worried this screen might be overal too bright even on the lowest setting ?

At the moment I have contrast at max, it helps wring a little extra detail out of TheWitcher. It can certainly be set much lower, probably lower than you would ever use but that's just my opinion.

Brightness: The reported low brightness was a major selling point for me, I think the first thing I did was to set it to zero, ten minutes later I changed it up to about 5. At the lowest setting this monitor is less bright than my CRT, and this is without resorting to turning all the colours down.

Lowest brightness I've measured, without messing around to much: 60cd/m
Best contrast I've measured : 800:1 . Easy maths, 80cd/m and a black level of 0.1cd/m.

On the whole ecat is a very happy cat

thx good to know it can go nice and low..

Anybody know of a movie(DivX etc)/BlueRay/HVDVD player that uses my ICC/ICM profile like Firefox, Photoshop etc does?

At the moment I use PowerDVD ver7 and although the image is very clean/sharp, the colour is still a bit off.

Anybody using PowerDVD 8 Ultra? Does it support ICC/ICM profiles and is it worth upgrading?

If this issue is resolved I can put my wide gamut woes to rest :). Brilliant monitor otherwise.

Thanx in advance.

If you owne an ATI card it's easily fixed:

Changing saturation in the ATI control panel is not a solution because it affects all colors, including those that are not saturated. So you solve a problem and create a new one.

Yes for people who can't be bothered to invest in hardware calibration kits.
The sample I had looked perfectly natural when choosing Custom color + 20 brightness + 40 contrast + 85 desaturation for desktop + 85 desaturation for video as shown on the above screenshot.

Hey everyone.

I got mine. I've been using it for a few days now and it's a really nice monitor. Except I was just wondering if anyone else had noticed an issue where the very right side of the screen is slightly darker than the rest of it. Also I think that the left side of the screen might be even more slightly brighter. Basically, that the screen is not completely uniform in brightness, though it is most noticeable on the right side with the area being darker. The issue is very slight and is only noticeable on solid background colors, mainly whites and other light colors.

Anyone else have something similar and I should just ignore it? Or is it a defect and I should RMA the monitor...
