HP Microserver+XPEnology

I'm probably being dumb but how do you find out your real mac addresses? Have it running on my spare N36L and it looks like a very slick polished OS and if it had a Sickbeard distro i would consider migrating to it.

So I noticed something weird with my DSM installation today - The CPU is permanently at 99%. When I had a look at the process log I saw 8 processes called https_x86_64, each taking up a chunk of CPU.

SSHing into the box and running top shows a bit more detail:

I then checked out the .cfg shown in top:

It seems my box has been hacked and is being used for *insert nefarious scheme here*. The box was immediately taken offline but it is a major concern that a third party has gained root access. The only port presented to the web was HTTPS, no other ports were forwarded and telnet/ssh were disabled too. I was running DSM 4.2-3211. Its frustrating that I am going to have spend the weekend sorting this out but at least I haven't lost any data...

you've missed loads of updates. Read above on how to do it.

Theres been nearly 5+ updates on 4.3 (literally every month since its release) ALL of which included security updates.

For the time and effort - why not just buy a synology to start with?

PS - DSM 5.0 Beta here now / me hearts my 712+ ;)

I did have a synology but I wanted more drive bays so I went this way. HP N54L £160 synology 6 bay £1600 ;)

I'm probably being dumb but how do you find out your real mac addresses?

Just get Ubuntu or a like installed on a USB stick then you can find out your mac addy.
Just post if you need any help.

EDIT=Forgot to say..get this file from synology server MediaServer-x64-1.1-2403.spk as the new Media serve does NOT do transcoding.

It came down to cost for me. Synology make nice kit, but it's expensive.

I upgraded to DSM 4.3, all my data and shares were preserved. TOok only 20 minutes in the end so I am happy!

Yep, tried re-indexing and no joy - the wrong programme / film info is easy enough to sort but it just isn't picking large numbers of films up in the first place

I've tried un-installing and re-installing DS Video, but get the same issue :S

You could try re-picking the \video folder and see if it gets the metadata and try to leave it a bit longer to index this time.

I did try that and left ot overnight

However, discovered the cause this morning ! All the films that we in the folder I was trying to index had "disappeared" they were deifinately there as I watched some of them :/

I copied them back over from my external HDD this morning and they have started to pick them up :)

On a slight tangent is there a media streamer / way to run DS video on a (non smart) TV in the lounge ?

I have an Asus OPlay! but you cant install the DS Video app on that - cheers !

That's confusing but good news in the end. Does the Oplay have DLNA? if so then your sorted.

What is the version of the media server you have installed? is it MediaServer-x64-1.1-2403.spk

Christ...haven't been in here for a while and suddenly people are getting their boxes hacked! Will have to update to the latest version tonight then.

I am hoping deuse can come to my rescue yet again? ;)

Using this: http://forums.overclockers.co.uk/showpost.php?p=25475385&postcount=97 how can I update my MAC and serial to what it should be?

Also - risks in updating to latest software version and allowing Synology to update at will? I don't want to brick my box obviously, but at the same time, I need the security updates to ensure no naughty people can get in and snoop about!

And while I'm on. Best/Easiest way to allow me to remotely put nzb files from my mobile into a watched folder found on the Synology microserver?

Yeh you got it. Get the app here http://www.raving.at/ to change your mac addy.

Ok, how do I find out what my proper MAC & Serial should be?

What is all this? :o

I would make sure you have a backup mate.

Backup of all data, or just server config etc?

Also - And while I'm on. Best/Easiest way to allow me to remotely put nzb files from my mobile into a watched folder found on the Synology microserver? Does anyone do this? Is it possible?

Sorry, what I mean is the Oplay! works, it just it uses the crappy Asus GUI

I'd love the (ideally) DS Video UI (or similar) on my TV and wondered what is the cheapest simplest way ?

Does the media share connect to the TV?

I would try to look for mods out there(but watch what you're doing). I use a WDTV SMP but my TV has a Lan
so I use that mostly with plex installed on the Nas and on my TV.

Ok,

so I haven't gotton around to either changing my MAC & serial to what they should be, or updating the software (I'm frightened of losing all my data to be honest!).

But something I did do last night was to set up a remote solution for downloading when I'm out and about. This will work for nzb files & torrent files.

You will need to have a dropbox account, and install Synobox: http://synobox.fr.nf/ Effectively, Synobox will check your specified dropbox folder every 5minutes, then sync it to your specified folder on the Synology. As long as your downloading tool (I use SabNZBd) is set to 'watch' that folder on the Synology, you suddenly have a way to download on the go very easily.

The icing on the cake for me was having an RSS reader (RSS Junkie) send me push notifications when, in my case, a new nzb of my requested type, was made available.
