HP Microserver+XPEnology

I did a quick test with a movie and after a slight pause, it started to play and transcode ok. But it maxed out the cpu at points. So, yes it can, but don't expect to use it for anything else during that time. If it is in the right movie format, you are fine, it's just transcoding where the issues begin. I went back to hosting the media manager on my i7 mac mini as it was on all the time anyway. I'd rather just not be concerned with file formats as that what plex is good at.
It's a pretty simple job to try though.

1080p ok over wireless to my tablet and phone. But I have a smart TV that's on the network so I use the DS Video app\DS video station :)

edit=I think the new DS video app has chrome cast built in, so try that.

Bit of a noob

Hi

Just wondering if anyone has found out if the hard drives used in xpenology are viewable within windows when taken out of the n54l. As relying on software raid until I save up for a hardware raid controller. If anyone using EXSI and has found a raid card that is suitable to VMWare, if you could let me no which ones work that would be great.

Also again bit of a noob question, what are the commands I need to enter to edit the grub file to enable wake on lan, Ive looked at the http://xpenology.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=2&t=910#p4226 forumn but stuck on how to edit the file required.

Many thanks

You mean the file to get the real mac addy and serial number?
gnoBoot picks up your real addy at boot and you only have to edit a file on the usb for serial. It's all here mate.

Oh and I don't use EXSI.

Does anyone have a N54L running xpenology with the plex app transcoding 1080p and streaming over a neywork? Does it manage ok? Googling seems to give mixed responses.

Thinking of using the above setup to stream media to my receiver/tv via my Chromecast.

I'm doing this - it works. Don't try using the NAS for anything else while watching a 1080p file though ;)

Only slight niggle is that I have a red number 1 on my control panels icon. It's as if something needs action, but I can't understand what.

UPDATE!

As per deuse's security suggestion, I created a new admin account.

But as a bonus, it cleared the red number one. Very satisfying :D

Might save someone reconfiguring their server just to clear that.

Great news and a great top tip :D

Have you done the new update? update 2

Yup. Went fine. Maybe I'm just foolhardy, but I just update these days. To be honest I don't really use them much. One just for a backup and the other to play with. They spend most of their time in standby :D

Well how pleased am i that i found this thread :)

I got a N54 last year to supplement an ageing Synology NAS box in an attempt to speed up my home network which consists pretty much exclusively apple kit.

I have limped along with the trial versions of Win 2012 server, which while apparently very powerful, was alway a bit too much of a compromise in all areas for my needs and never really sat well my apple household

Anyway after getting notification that my server 2012 trial was coming to an end soon i took the plunge and installed the XPEnology at the weekend, as a result my network is much much more stable - no more shares disappearing after waking my iMac's from sleep, no more missing appleTV media playback issues, i have Time Machine backup on all my macs across the network, and file transfer speeds a well up @ ~100meg/sec

Very happy with this solution - need to explore a bit more to make use of the extra power and speed that the N54 provides.

Welcome :D

There is another update via synology but hold off for a day or two.
The update they posted got replaced soon after so I'm holding off.

Just spent the last hour reading through the thread and it is very informative and an excellent amount of info to help get started.

I have just picked up an N40L and installed Nas4Free (Couldn't get freenas to share CIFS) on UFS. Whilst I like it and it is up and running, this looks more up my street.

My main use will be to use it to distribute multimedia files across my LAN but I will also want to be able to FTP files via WAN and also stream when away from home.
Upon looking at the available apps from Synology, the below interest me:

iTunes Server
Photo Station
Plex
Download Station

So now my questions:

To install - I will have a USB stick to boot from, do I still need a spare drive in slot 1 or can I leave them blank until I have this set up and then add the 2 * 2tb HDDS ready to be formatted?
I presume I still follow the guide on the 1st page (post 4 or 11) and use the links is post 1?

Apps:

How is the iTunes server, any known issues? At the moment we have 5 PCS all running Windows (7&8) and all the music is stored on the NAS and that's where each iTunes is pointing too. Is there any reason I should use this instead of how it is currently set?

One last question based on the last post by deuse

Update.

It seams we can't install the newest DS. We will have to wait for a work around or another version of gnoBoot.

Even using
"sed 's/flashupdateDeb/flashupdateDeb1/' /[email protected]> /[email protected]
mv /[email protected] /[email protected]"

It was a no :(

What does this mean in real world terms going forward? What are the repercussions of not being able to install the latest DS?
