HP Microserver+XPEnology

First you have to pick which version you're going to use. gnoBoot is more up to date and you can upgrade\downgrade.

To install gnoBoot http://xpenology.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=2&t=2152 but don't try to install DSM 5.0-4482.
get the one before of the synology ftp site. http://ukdl.synology.com/download/

As for iTunes I don't use it so it's turned off. The last part is a small script you run when DS says you have a update. It's documented here.

Again allways have a backup and DON'T try to install DSM 5.0-4482 just yet.

So one of my boxes has decided to play up, the volume is crashing on start up, so currently trying to get all the data transferred asap. This one is running under ESXi, so i created a new 20GB vDisk, added it to the machine, however it is not showing, any ideas?

Did you try to install the latest DSM update?

It appears it now unmounts the volume on start.

Read this for info - think you can downgrade to get it all back as it was.

Just a heads up but versions 4.1 to 5.0 are open to OpenSSL Heartbeat attacks. Synology has released patches for 4.3 and 5.0 but they've yet (when i checked the other day) made their way to XPenology - traitor has said he'll patch the 4.3 3827 beta release.

It is however possible to patch it manually, either by compiling the OpenSSL source or extracting OpenSSL from the 'critical update' patch - did the latter on a 4.3 3810 test VM and it appears to work, certainly passed Nessus' heartbeat test (tested pre and post).

I tested for hearbleed at this site https://filippo.io/Heartbleed/ and it says all is ok. I do use No_ip ddns.

For 5.0, update '4458' patches OpenSSL to 'g'; 4.3, it's '3827 Update 2' (HERE) - anything below than are you're open to to the attack.
Easiest way to check is to SSH into the box and run
Code:
openssl version

Saying that, i've yet to bother updating my 4.3 3810 install mainly because it isn't internet facing and sits behind a VPN if i need remote access.

(Hopefully) a quick noob question ......

I am clearing my study / man cave out and fitting a new Worktop/desk this weekend and disconnecting all my PC / server etc

When I come to out it all back is there anything in particular I need to do to restart the NAS ?

Cheers

Still no news about a new gnoBoot, but I hope he sorts out the 4482 problem.

It would be a real shame if this proved to be the end of this project. It doesn't seem like it would be unsurmountable, but it is dependant on a single person willing to put the time in. But at least it is all working as it should, so not a huge deal.

I can't see any problems you would have. You've got the usb stick still in ect?

Something is deleting files after a reboot, they know what's getting deleted it's just what script is doing it.
