HP Microserver+XPEnology

Update from me...

The web page is showing no volume. (after about 24hrs). Constantly connected and still accessible. The other is still function ok, but was turned off as it only comes on for an hour, but I turned it on this morning.
We don't seem to have lost any data, just a problem seeing the disks in the browser. It also effects the backup, so I will downgrade at some point is there is no immediate fix.
Please post if you spot a fix being mentioned.
Thank you.

Can you access the HD from within windows?
I'm asking this as my backup HD has decided to die and my 4TB HD won't be here till Wednesday.

I'm on a mac i'm afraid.

But I can log on to the server and see all my files. It seems that the volume is still there, but not accessible through the web interface.

The only issue I'm having is that the auto backup won't work as it doesn't believe the volume is there. But that is through the web interface again.

It might work if left to it's own devices.

I don't think this is a catastrophe, but has the potential to get worse.

I'm using the disks presently, but I think I will probably downgrade if a solution is not found this afternoon.

I had that error message come up when first opening the web interface (I think it was then) and that is most likely the cause.

Thanks for the info.

Further info and it's not good news.

Rolling back to 5.0 leaves me without AFP, which I need to access files over my network. I'm caught between risking staying on 5.1 and potentially losing my data and rolling back and not being able to access it at all. Well, I can ftp into it and get files that way, but not great.

Do I regret being an early adopter!

If you haven't upgraded, don't!!!!

I hope the clever guys who made this happen can debug it soon.

My new HD has come so I will do a backup later. Then format my 4 nas HDs in windows and install 5.0.
If I could find a Qnap 451 at £300 I would buy it so I wouldn't have any problems like this again.

Did you not migrate then deuse? I thought that flashing the usb, and installing/updating the dsm was the standard way.

To update - mine has taken a serious turn for the worse. Now I can't even access the web page.

Going to try a reinstall, to get things functional again (hopefully).

At this stage, a full reinstall is looking like the only solution. I really don't want to start from scratch if I can possibly help it. It would be great to hear from one of the developers as to whether a fix may be possible. It would have been better to fail straight off, but this is much worse as I've done it to both machines!

They tell you to pick upgrade from the menu. I never did this, I just flashed the img and booted. Migrated using the latest DS.

If I was you I'd just use one spare HD which has been formatted on a PC and test.

Wow! And it retained all your volumes and settings?

That sounds like a sound plan. But not sure how I then get my volumes back.

I have turned it off and will probably sit tight for a while and see if anything surfaces.

If yours remains good, it might be worth downgrading and updating as you have done. A last ditch attempt to drag myself out of the mire!

Thanks for posting :)

I will leave it on see if it goes down. Will report back.

Thanks a million!

I can't even ftp into my server now. Well, I can, but it is blank.

Restarting has made things much worse now. It is pretty much useless now.

I'll give it a little while and try to downgrade. Before it is even too late to do that.

To be honest, it couldn't have gone worse. The delay has put all my data in jeopardy. To say I'm concerned is an understatement!

You did do a full backup? Nearly finished mine :)

All the data is backed up to another. But i updated that too. I was able to roll it back but can't access the data over AFP, but maybe over ftp.

I've taken the disks out of my main one and put another disk in and installed the pukka synology software. But not sure now if I put my disks in it will be any better. I can't roll back now and no data shows over ftp.

I am really feeling alone here

Edit - can access the backup server over ftp. I am not connecting it to the internet, just in case that has any bearing at all. I want to go back to a fully functional 5.0 and as I only have enough drives to have two copies, I'm a bit stuck. I really don't want to do anything risky until I have two copies again. Might have to get some more disks. It could be worse, but at the moment it doesn't feel like it!

Further edit. Put another disk in and reistalled 5.0 This time it did a fresh install. All updated and reinserted my disks and apart from a simple error that they needed attention. NO data was lost and these are a pair of raid 0 (striped arrays). I put the install disk in the top compartment, so I would have only the one disk to worry about in future. If I ever update again that is :)

And breathe!!!!

Isn't that the same update thats been available for a while? I've been looking at xpenology.com but seems to be very little info about the 5.1 updates?

I feel like I have had a lucky escape. Think I'll sit tight now I've been able to go back to 5.0

First rule of anything is 'don't fix it if it ain't broken'. Wise words!
