HP Microserver+XPEnology

Is anyone streaming external subtitles to their tv via the DS video app?
I'm trying to do this to my LG TV but can't find a android app that will do it GRrrrrrrr

I've got a Qnap coming so I will be putting the N54L back in it's box. I do hope they get 5.1 sorted for those who are having problems.

I went for the Qnap TS-451. It's got HDMI 1.4 for 3D and XBMC.
No more trying to get external subs to work on my LG TV :)

Moneybags :D

Does sound like it ticks a lot of boxes. Will you be using xpenology on it? :D:D

Oh, and did you find a good price on it? Guess you can't say where...

I got it about £10 less that's all. But as none of the N54L parts will fit the Qnap it's back in it's box :(

xpenology was fun to try and use and it's still great in my opinion.

Will you be gifting your old server to the first person who replies :p

I'd be interested if you were flogging it though. Not sure how on this forum, but please let me know.

And do keep us informed of your experience with the qnap. I'd be very interested too.

Cheers.

There is a members market here. Read the FAQ about what you need. But I won't be putting in MM.

Will let you know about the Qnap.

Doubt I'll ever see the MM anyway.

Look forward to hearing how you get on with the Qnap though.

I wouldn't discount the N54L as a backup server though unless you have other provision.

do you use plex at all? would love to know how it gets on with transcoding....

this is the main reason I went with a home made nas....not many are upto the job.....

Not sure it is ultra powerful for that either. I host my Plex media manager on my mac mini (i7 which is always on) and that does the transcoding, but the files are on the nas.

The N54L will transcode, but it barely manages it.

The point is you will use power whether it is the nas or the pc. To be honest, I've got a more than powerful enough processor already, so why turn it off and run a powerful nas?

Hope that gives you some food for thought.

What struggles with plex on the N54? I use it all the time and haven't come across anything it cant play on either my lg or Samsung tv

I have read it will do 720 stuff ok, but 1024 maxes it out (and from my own experience transcoding at HD takes it to the very limit).

Of course, if your files don't need transcoding, you are good to go. But that can be a black art. Certainly if you have discovered the 'formula', then you are not going to need much processing power at all.

It does seem that everyone's experience can be different with the multitude of players, tv's and servers.

Guess I'm saying if it doesn't work, you may be better using your regular pc to transcode, rather than buying a more powerful server as they both have to be on all the time anyway.

All my films are in 1080p and I had no problem viewing them on my phone\tablet\TV.
A friend who was 300 miles from me used to watch films in his house from the N54L.

Are they being transcoded though? My Apple TV2 and tv is 720p, so maybe that is why when I put Plex on the actual box, it just about managed a 1080p file. I certainly couldn't play two at once as it maxed out the processor (as seen from the browser control panel).

But it's easy enough to try. If it works, it works. If I was buying a nas, I would probably want to go more powerful, rather than risk a failure. But with three PC's on full time, I have lot's of options!

The HP Gen7 N54L is just below the borderline for what you need for 1080p transcoding. You might get away with a lower bitrate file or certain scenario but in the main it's going to struggle at transcoding 1080p. If you're not transcoding (i.e. m4p to iOS, or using Synology/QNAP apps) then you're not going to be too bothered about this. The QNAP TS-451 is based on the Intel Celeron J1800 @ 2.41Ghz, so it is not going to be able to transcode 1080p video (Plex forums link).

That said I think I get why Deuse has bought a NAS. The lack of maintenance, regular updates, easy to install apps and featured mobile apps (and I guess fixing subtitles) make it a compelling purchase if you don't need the horsepower for something like Plex.

I deliberated with this question for a long time and only recently replaced my old Synology with a HP Gen8 MicroServer running Ubuntu Server simply because I wanted to get away from using a NAS and use Plex heavily. But as mentioned in some scenarios the NAS wins.

That's the reason I went for home made nas, I use a core i5 3470 with 4 gig ram and a mini itx board in a unas 400 case.

I use xpenology with plex as my main server which feeds a couple of roku sticks as well as a few family members.

With the current problems with xpenology sometimes just wish there was a similar spec nas.

I've looked at asustor and qnap systems and I like the fact they have Xbmc and snes emulators....but they lack the spec I already have.

Yes, for similar reasons I had to run a Linux server even with my old NAS. There is the QNAP x70 series that have an (upgradable) i3 CPU and memory, but they are around the £870+ mark and therefore very expensive.

Just started to play with DSM, was using parity raid on a windows server platform. How does SHR work with respect to the parity? Does it span parity across all drives like Raid 5 or more like flexraid/unRAID which uses a dedicated disk (which you can allocate yourself)? I bought a 3TB WD Red to act as my parity disk but I'm not sure how I can allocate this disk as a parity disk in SHR?

Any pointers?

So it looks like the 5.1 DSM problems stem from it phoning home and it then not getting the right response from the server and blocking stuff. XPenology has the details, seem to have got around it by using the hosts file but then none of the synology signed apps will then work or be found.
