HRT

Could Ilmor come back as an engine (re)brand (although I cant remember it ever being used as part of a team name)?

Ilmor *as it was* is now named Mercedes Benz High Performance Engines and is fully owned by Merc. They currently make all the Mercedes F1 engines.

But Ilmor does exist again now as an entirely seperate company. Makes all sorts of high performance engines for various uses, racing, military, boats and so on.

And for the last part:

Tyrrell, Leyton House (renamed to March the next year, same engines), Sauber, and Pacific all ran Ilmore engines and were named as such.

*off to the geek corner*

I was going to say the only one I could remember was Pacific :(

#f1 Colleagues in Spain telling me HRT HQ is closing, all staff have redundancy notices. Sounds like that's it for them. 11 teams in 2013?

@Jamesallenonf1 Yes, the factory will close on Monday so HRT fulfil their contractual obligation with FOM.

They could just skip practice, set a time in Q1 which will be slower than the 107% rule and go home.

I don't wish redundancy on anyone, but they really were terrible and made no effort to improve.

Cheers.

Yeah. If they breach it they don't get any of their share of prize money.

Shame that nobody bought them. I still ultimately blame the FIA though.
So even though HRT have scored 0 points and are last in constructors they still get prize money? Is this prize money simply for taking part in F1 or is it linked to TV advertising that Bernie gets?

Remember you are wishing redundancy on a lot of people who had very little chance of improving the team - as they were just following orders.

Fair enough blame the money side of things (lack of investment etc), and blame the main designers etc, but pit crews and 90% of those at the factory are just obeying orders from their boss

It's a shame to see a team go like this but I guess it was inevitable with the way it was going for them.

Hopefully if there is a situation where new teams will be admitted there will be a bit more thought into the teams... ah who am I kidding that's not going to happen :p

F1 teams get a share of the commercial income of the sport as part of the Concorde agreement. Prize money is probably the wrong term. But yes, by taking part in F1 the teams get given money by Bernie. The share they get varies depending on where they finish plus other factors, so the amount HRT will get will be a tiny fraction of someone like Ferrari or Red Bull, but they will still be getting something.

I think at the moment the split is 50/50 of the commercial income between CVC and the teams.

Shame to see a team leave, but did we really expect all the new entries to survive?

Perhaps one of the other interested parties from before might come on to take over the facilties and enter in 2014? I dont think a 2013 entry would be advisable, or possible (USF1 anyone...)

Would be nice to have a new team join, but ideally one that can work out.

USF1 seemed like a bit of a shambles, although if F1 in America does pick up an American team would seem like a good thing.

Some of the other teams that applied at least seemed to have a better chance like Prodrive or Stefan GP. Didn't Alex Wurz front one of the entries too? Always quite liked him, though he's working with Williams now.

Stefan GP was a joke. It was basically 1 guy in an office trying to convince everyone he was a racing team.

The Prodrive entry was a substantial one though. As was the first 'Lotus' branded attempt, which I think was backed by Litespeed racing or something.

Paul Stoddart also lodged an entry.

Edit:

The FIA also had several entry bids from other racing teams including World Series by Renault and Le Mans entrant Epsilon Euskadi,[77] Dave Richards's highly successful Prodrive outfit[78] and Italian touring car team N.Technology[79] as well as re-imaginings of former teams March,[80] Brabham,[80] Lola Cars[81] and Team Lotus (not to be confused with Lotus Racing).[82] Other expressions of interest came from Team Superfund, an Austrian outfit to be fronted by former driver Alex Wurz[83] and myf1dream.com, a team established by fans of the sport and funded by their donations.[84] Experienced sports car and touring car entrant Ray Mallock Limited had intended to submit an entry bid,[85] but decided against it following the mid-season political crisis.

The argument the FIA got into with the existing teams prevented a lot of people continuing to make serious bids, presumably because it was becoming clear that the FIA would be selecting teams based on political allegance rather than an actual ability to compete successfully. It took longer than I expected, but it seems to have finally started to back fire.
