Sounds like this race was a bit of a farce?
It wasn't shown in China because the Olympics takes every TV slot, but I had been checking the motorsport.com updates.

Pretty wild how much faster that Mercedes is than everyone else. Standard F1 to be changing good results for drivers after the race. :)

You mean upholding the rules?

lol at the FIA. They just so happen to need that 1 litre sample right then. I assume then that they pumped 1 litre out of every car on the track, since the rule states it has to be available "at any time" and not "at the end of the race". They just happened to pick a car that clearly ran out of fuel at the end of the race by random did they?

Well no, they didn't have too.

Stopping on track after the race is like holding your hand up and shouting "Hey you guys, come check me"

Those are the rules and we have seen teams fall foul of them before and will no doubt see it again in the future.

I agree it sucks but rules are rules.

The rate that Hamilton was catching vettel, without he extra fuel use he could well have caught and overtaken him. Loads of people crying foul play, but it’s a pretty old rule.

Isn’t there some rule that says you have to make it back to parc ferme under your own steam, and cannot just stop to conserve fuel?

Think it was introduced when Hamilton, ironically, pushed his McLaren back in qualy at Canada

That was quali not the race. I would have thought the team told Vettel to stop as they realised the fuel level was marginal. They have stated there was 1.4l in the tank but just couldn't extract the 1.0l necessary according to the rules. I believe this ruling came about when it was found that the BAR team were running an illegal second fuel tank in 2005 allowing the car to run underweight https://wtf1.com/post/the-forgotten-story-of-the-2005-san-marino-gp/
Aston Martin have appealed...

Rule 6.6.2

After a practice session, if a car has not been driven back to the pits under its own power, it will be required to supply the above mentioned sample plus the amount of fuel that would have been consumed to drive back to the pits. The additional amount of fuel will be determined by the FIA.

I mean obviously if you stop on track they are always going to test the fuel amounts anyway. Don't think you can be annoyed at the stewards for this one.

Do they have any recourse? It just looks like they are going through standard procedure at the moment as they have nothing to lose abs a narrow window to appeal in.

Looking back on it now, really pleasing to see Fernando has much fight in him. I was expecting him to have a hard time readjusting to F1 but he's doing well. I hope his enthusiasm and passion continue.

Really happy for Williams too. Just curious as to whether Mr Saturday has ever outscored a team mate in F1 (points wise)?

Can't believe Aston have messed up that much.

Way back when we used to design fuel tank to still hold 1.5 litres even when the fuel pickup was sucking on nothing but air.

Guaranteed to get the 1 litre out still even if car has stopped due to running out of fuel.

Rule has been known about for many years.

And no-one thinks that the stewards' inability to get the litre of fuel out of Seb's car has anything at all to do with his little pre-race protest with the t-shirt?

C'mon...;)

This was a race not a practice session (which, btw, includes Quali in the rules).

I don't see how you can be annoyed at the stewards for applying the rules.

"During the hearing in [the] presence of the FIA technical delegate and the FIA technical director the team principal of Aston Martin stated that there must be 1.44 litres left in the tank, but they are not able to get it out.

"This figure is calculated using the FFM or injector model. Given this situation, car No. 5 is not in compliance with the requirements of Art. 6.6 FIA technical regulations.

"According to Art. 6.6.2 competitors must ensure that a 1.0-litre sample of fuel may be taken from the car at any time.

I mean it's quoted everywhere from multiple sources. Do you know something the FIA don't?

Not sure how anyone can take up issue with the stewards checking the fuel of a car stopped on track. Use some common sense.

I was actually more back to when Aston Martin started making wild claims about the rule/floor change at the beginning of the season, how it had been intentional (and unnecessary) by the FIA just to slow Merc down etc etc...

It sounds like there was a faulty sensor somewhere that led them to believe more was onboard than there was. I don't see how else to interpret their statement regarding ba calculation of 1.44l left.

From what I'm reading the fuel is there, just it can't be pumped out, so presumably they can take the car apart to get to it. From what I read they're going to claim that if/when they do that and get >1 litre remaining (after the 300ml sample), and given that 300ml is enough to test, that they shouldn't get penalised...

It's about as likely as RB's craziness :p
