In two and a half seasons of racing in F1, he's only finished 5 races behind teammates (where both cars finished) but of those 5 races, 2 have been races where a Williams has actually scored a point or two :p The other way to look at it I suppose is that his team mates have done it when it counted :p

You could also say that Russell has cost himself points on a few occasions: that crash under the safety car for example. His quali record is utterly stunning: only once has a teammate outqualified him, which was when he switched into a new car - that didn't fit him - mid-season and still landed within a 30th of a second of Bottas.

I'm really looking forward to Belgium.. its long been my favourite track.... Unpredictable weather often makes for great races there... 1998 Damon Hill wins for Jordan's first GP victory with Schumacher rear ending Coulthard

Bring it on... championship getting tasty AND testy! :-)

Good track and looking forward to the race but not particularly looking forward to the backlash from the fans towards Mercedes & Lewis. It's going to be pretty bad if how they have been acting online is anything to go by.

It reminds me of, I think it was BAR Honda, who fell foul in a similar fashion as their fuel tank had a small surge tank built in which would always have to be full of fuel. Come testing though the ‘main’ tank didn’t have enough fuel in. From memory they just had to take the penalty and I can’t it changing for AM even if they do dismantle the car and provide the fuel.

The BAR situation was different. Their engine required the surge tank to contain 5ltr of fuel at all times for the fuel system to work. Rather than suffer the ~5kg weight penalty they made the car lighter and used the fuel as ballast. The rules, however, require the car to meet the minimum weight dry and so when it was emptied of all fluids (once the FIA were made aware of what was happening) the car came in underweight.

Seb has been removed from qualifying results in the past when he ran short of fuel, and in 2012 Lewis stopped out on track in the Spanish GP to allow sufficient fuel to remain for the sample but was removed from the qually results as fuel shortage isn't an allowed reason for a failure to return to the pits. This gave Pastor Maldonado pole and then take his only GP win.

More I think about it the more I this year is another merc slam dunk.

The damage to the engine and the penalties coming for this means I just can't see them winning this.

Two races ago it looked like Verstappen was running away with it :) A lot can change in a short time.

Well, this is what I'm thinking a lot can change. The red bull engine situation is on the edge. Mercedes are making ground. If they start getting engine penalties do they have a hope of success?

I think it's looking much more likely its another Hamilton/merc year. Hope I'm wrong

Apparently perez and verstappen are both now on thier final engine.

Conversely with the 2022 changes I would like Hamilton to secure his 8th Championship as I expect he'll retire in the next year or two, and the 2022 shakeup, cost caps and haemorrhaging staff could hurt Merc

Really?
Where is this reported?

If the Perez write-off is confirmed then he will have to move onto his third and final power unit of the season at the Belgian Grand Prix.

And on a weekend where Red Bull had to move Max Verstappen on to his third engine too following a crack being discovered on the unit that had been crashed at the British GP, it means Red Bull faces a double penalty blow later in the campaign.

As much as I have taken a dislike to RBR and MV after their antics post Silverstone, I can't help but feel for the team having to suck up so much damage and cost through one incident which definitely wasn't their own fault and another which was judged by the stewards to be more Lewis's fault than Max's.

If your car or both cars are clearly taken by no fault of your own I think it's unfair for those costs to come out of your budget. I don't know what the answer is, making another team pay seems silly as it's never clear cut but perhaps the repair costs caused by others shouldn't be part of the cost cap.

Not just the costs but then having change gearboxes or engines resulting in penalties. If Bottas rammed into the back on MV in a race, and Bottas was entirely at fault. The resulting damage means the engine is written off. Would be fair that the team is then penalised for replacing the engine?

The flip side is, the team may gain an advantage from 'fresh' engine. Perhaps they should be able to make a new engine out of old 'good' parts.

Max went to a new engine. His first engine was end of life and the data from the telemetry of the 2nd engine flagged that something was amiss so it was replaced. As this 3rd engine is unlikely to last half a season they will probably need a 4th at some point.

Well the one positive for them is that his car is one of the top 4 cars so depending on the race he chooses to take the hit he should at least be able to get back to 3rd/4th at worst.

You might want to check that, if max took a new engine that wasn’t in the rotation he would have served a grid penalty, they were very clear on commentary it was a previous engine
