HUNGARORING - BUDAPEST - HUNGARY Grand Prix 2009 - Race 10/17

Most likely? Massa will recover within four weeks. If he doesn't recover it's more likely to be Badoer or Gené. Schumacher is the wild card, an unlikely but awesome choice.

i would be very very surprised if massa is allowed anywhere near a f1 car this year, i know a bike rider who cracked his skull (no brain damage) who was told by his surgeon to give up riding and anything that induces sudden G-forces, rollercoasters etc for life.

For surgery on damage to his skull?
You have to be careful of wording... for all we know, the 'surgery' is actually just cosmetic and he has been sedated and not coma induced. Damage to skull could just be bad english and actually be cuts (damage) to head (skull). I'm not saying this is the case, but the media wording can mean any number of things ranging from extremely serious to minor.

Getting Schumacher in would be amazing. I'd love to see him racing in modern F1 against Hamilton / Alonso and the flying Redbulls/Brawns :D
would love to see that, and i'm not even a Schui fan. Cant see it happening though. Have finally managed to get the channel I need working in my room (had to go elsewhere for qualy) early start for me here tomorrow. 7am race start on Mexico time. . . Eeeek! (sorry I cant put paragraphs in, am on my phone)

9AM in Brazil as always :(

i think eddy J should be fired for his "hit on the chin" comments that are obviously ********.

Well, EJ got pretty close to what actually happened.

At the time no one knew, but EJ came up with the theory (somehow) that something had hit Massa on the head/chin. Obviously, we now know it was closer to the eye than the chin, but EJ got very close to the truth, when nobody else could.

The car hasn't looked particularly quick all weekend though.

Button was 3 or 4 tenths off pole in quali one and two - ok not brilliant but not as bad as a full second off the pace

Surely there's an argument to say that their car shouldn't have a defect that's dangerous to the other competitors? I'm not saying I think they should be punished, it was a freak accident, but it happened nontheless, and what the stewards think and what we do may be very different!

racing damage - nothing else

The fault isnt engineered into the car (which would be impossible to prove anyway and in a currently championship winning car almost pointless to try and persue)

The damage / injury looks nasty but its still very surprising the severity of the injuryies given the helmet should have protected majority of the force. He must be lucky to be alive at all by the sounds of the operation needed considering that it could have hit him absolutely anywhere - Im not a fan but I really hope he gets back in an F1 car soon

Personally think either Hamilton or Alonso will hold up majority of the top 10 until their first stops and then the race starts - I cant see one of those two NOT leading after the first lap (Alonso because he is very light on fuel, and Hamilton because of KERS)

While I think it was unfortunate that Button has 4 - 5 laps more fuel than anyone else in the top 10 that may not be such a bad thing with KERS cars all around likely to hold him up severely anyway. As long as the RB's dont escape (and I hope they dont) into the distance it could make for an interesting race after about lap 15 - 20

A quick back of the envelope calculation shows that the spring hit Massa with three times the energy of a bullet from a .44 Magnum  Not directly comparable because of the contact areas, but I think it shows how serious this was, and how impressive those helmets are.

sorry thats complete bs - there is no way of knowing what actually caused the spring to jump into the air in the first place as the Brawn had long gone (shown during quali) - therefore any energy "stored" is a complete guess not even thinking about any other immeasurables

Presumiably he's actually calculating it using the speed of the car - not the spring....

We know the weight of the spring (approx 1kg) and his speed (roughly 175mph) so we can calculate the kinetic energy of the collision using the normal formula. It's not going to be accurate, because we don't have exact figures and we don't know what speed the spring was travelling at. But it should be ballpark.
