HUNGARORING - BUDAPEST - HUNGARY Grand Prix 2009 - Race 10/17

Oh dear. Browsing through the pictures the mrs took of my son this weekend I come across this photo. I think I might not be his father after all.

Ferrari? Is there an age limit of beatings? ;) Is 8 weeks too young?

Been looking at the spring on the 3rd damper that's on our car this morning. It's proper scary to think that hit some one in the face at 160mph! I hope he recovers well.

I'd love to know how it came loose from the brawn in the first place. I reckon the damper piston must have snapped completely to allow the spring to leave it's seats. I can only assume that whatever they replaced it with on both cars has killed their rear grip. I've no doubt they'll be able to sort that out for Valencia.

Nelson would be lucky to have a pit crew job with Renault after the last race lol.

On the Massa front, as someone who works in ITU and has worked in neuro-ITU before, I agree that we probably won't see Massa in a Ferrari again this season :-( The sedation (anaesthesia essentially) is done to keep the brain (pressures - Intra Cranial Pressure) as close to physiologically normal as possible, i.e if your awake you are liable to have a higher BP (which affects your ICP), you might sneeze/cough - all of which push your ICP through the roof. A high ICP is bad news with a traumatised brain, as it leads to 2ndry injury. Similarly another head injury within 6 months spells bad news for the brain, so as doctors we prefer people not to be put in a situation where they are at risk of a repeat in a short space of time.

Its anyone's guess as to how long Massa will remain in ITU, but just like Hammond it is possible for an essentially fit person to make a complete recovery, which is I am sure what we are all hoping for.

A guy I used to work with got hit at 70mph on the helmet by a bird of prey. It took half his helmet away and smashed his face up. Let alone being hit by a piece of metal at 160. Massa was lucky to live really.

Not a chance. 7 races to go and he's been in an induced coma with a head injury. I think you have more chance of driving the ferrari this season.

The doctors won't allow it and I doubt the team will either.

It's the perfect time to put kimi's replacement in the car. They could end up needing two new drivers.
I doubt we will see Massa back in the car this season either. Doctors and medical staff are always worried about head injuries more. They just wouldn't allow it, nor would the team.

Agreed he won't be back this season, there's just no point risking it particularly as the team aren't involved in a title fight. It's just made it even more likely that Ferrari will write off the rest of this season and concentrate on next years car.

I'm sure I've not seen a car park up before because the wheel is loose, in the past they've usually just trundled round and made it back to the pits?
Weren't any screams of EVIL IRRESPONSIBLE MURDERERS back then?

What about Vettel being sent back out? He could have killed someone if he crashed into them. Same with anyone in the rain, how dare they keep driving. If they crashed, someone might die.
Broken front wing? Yep, murderer! Stop that car immediately!

Obviously tyres are a far more dangerous thing to have come off, but Alonso was not hurtling round at 150mph, he was trundling back to the pits.
Where do you draw the line? I'm sure there are a whole raft of unlikely circumstances that could result in someones death, where fast cars and smashy accidents happen.

We might as well ban the sport completely, it's just not safe enough.

For some reason you seem to be completely missing the point that the team released a car back into the race with a KNOWN problem.

Much the same as when Honda wasn't it? Kept the car running despite the engine failing.

You have to be sensible, which I don't think your post was. Tyres are extremely dangerous and even though he was only going slow, you could see how far / high the tyre rolled and bounced. It wouldn't have been the first time a tyre has gone into the crowd and killed people. A broken wing wouldn't. As soon as he felt the tyre going, especially after it went to an angle, he should have pulled over.

My worry for Massa is the eye damage... if he is blind / partially blind in the one eye I think thats a professional race career over.

Renault should have told Alonso straight away the tyre wasn't mounted properly, he could have stopped at the end of the pitlane where it might have been fixed.

Damn about Massa, if his vision is impaired that could well mean the end of his career :(

What did they know? Cars have competed in F1 with lose wheel wotsits before, did they know it was not screwed on and likely to come off? Or did they just think an optional aerodynamic component was loose.
