i just got dead space 2 but i'm so disappointed

Getting a gift off ocuk is nice and all but i wonder what message that puts out. Bare with me tho as i think its cool and all that but what will the media think. They "may" think you did all this to get freebies which is obviously wrong as we all know but do you see how it could be seen?

Btw what are your plans after deadspace 2 is patched. Will you keep campaigning for all games with cappa or just play deadspace 2 and that will be the end of the thread?

As im just wondering, if this can happen what do you think if you went after all developers to get custom mapping including remapping mouse controls. You might start a whole new gaming standard if you press at it.

Means ocuk values gareth as a person and his passion for gaming!

Simples!

Truly inspirational thread, I hope this gives games developers the kick up the arse that they need to ensure those that are less able can play games just as easily as everyone else :)

On a more general note this issue highlights a concept I've been thinking about for some time.

Back in the 1990s Microsoft introduced DirectX as (amongst other things) a way of providing a common interface between games and hardware to make things easier for Developers. We've subsequently seen things like the Games for Windows program too.

Why is this relevant? Well, an idea I've had for a while, is that Microsoft should create their own game control mapping centre, right into Windows. How this would work is as follows:

Within Windows, for each game genre, you would have a set of control profiles listing common actions. For example, in a FPS game, this would include:

Forward
Back
Left
Right
Jump
Crouch
Prone
Lean left
Lean right
Reload
Primary fire
Secondary fire
Weapon 1....10
Melee
Use/Interact
etc

You then map these commands to whatever keys/buttons you want within a Windows interface.

Then game developers, in addition to providing their own customisation options, could latch onto this by defaulting (or having the option to populate) their game controls based on your 'master' game controls as you have defined in Windows. So, in gareth170's case, he would have walk forward mapped to the mouse button in Windows. He would only need to set this up once. When he buys a new game, providing it supports this new windows feature (making it a Games For Windows requirement would be nice), the control is already setup for him to use out of the box.

Of course, every game is different. Some games will have random commands like x-ray vision or whatever. So we still need the ability to remap controls within the game. But wouldn't it be a nice head start if say the 20 most commonly used commands could be 'permanently' mapped to whatever key/button you want, without having to set them up for every single new game you play (or worse, you find out that you can't even define the mapping you want)?

Such a feature would have wide-ranging benefits. Not just for cases like this, but for every single PC gamer who is fed up with having to individually setup every game - especially for those who say, don't want to use WASD for movement.

Obviously, such an idea would need fleshing out a lot, but I think it would make people's (gaming) lives easier.

It's not as though Gareth has asked for anything from us.

OcUK are 100% behind the campaign for people who need customisable controls. I believe as a disabled person then life can potentially be quite unhappy, but Gareth clearly trys (pretty damn well) to ensure that his disability doesn't hinder what could be one of his favourite hobbies.

Gareth is an inspiration to many people.

i don't think they'll see it that way tbh. it's ocuk way of saying thank u for the publishly.. it's like ea sending me something has it's they way of being sorry...

i will keep campaigning for all games

Much respect to you, Gareth. You won't be short of support, I'm sure. I can't speak for anyone else but I will back your efforts as much as I can. :)

HangTime, you could be on to something...

Well said, and some, respect!

Bro we just went 29k.... i can't even clip cool storys bro fast enough.

Out of interest gareth you said you use an on screen keyboard but do you have to type each letter individually or do you have a predictive mode of some sort? Wondering because some of your posts might take a while one letter at a time ^^

Keep it up by the way, all the best to both you and chuck!

edit: oh and you're damn good at NFS

These are some of the best videos i've ever seen from a gamer, you really do have a lot of heart in you Gareth and i hope these gaming companies do listen to you.(i also agree with the above, with the amount of money they get they should send you a lot of free stuff including games.)

Signed the petition right away, i really do like the idea mentioned before where someone said we should have a collection for Gareth to get some good gaming equipment for his needs and i straight away would hand a wad of cash in for it.:)

All the best with the interview too!

I keep reading this thread and all the post's simply because its an amazing cause an Gareth is an Inspiration. This is a story that everyone should follow through to the end. Like a good book you can't put down.

Every time I read the new posts and the external articles I choke up. Seriously.

This is such a heart warming story. To see a whole community behind the case, most of whom are unaffected by custom key mappings or the lack of. It's an unbelievable thing to see. I thought people like this didn't exist any more and you've proved that 30,000 people do.

Gareth170, I bow in the presence of a superior man.

Anybody that can do what you do. Have the patience, the determination and inspiration to touch so many people the way you have is a better man than me.

Good luck with the interview.

P.S I signed the petition a day or two ago and will also be buying the PC Gamer Mag.

Good post unKn0wn, I agree with everything you said.

I get very emotional reading this thread and I don't mind admitting it ;)

Yep, no problem in admitting that I cried when I first read the thread, makes me feel very humble. :)

Good luck with the interview. :)

I would love to know just why they don't always make fully customisable games, they should do this for every game. If there was a rare exception to the rule then it should state on the back where the rest of the system spec info is.

Why did you cry, I dont see Gareth170 crying over not having customizable controls he just gets on with it, has a rant, moves on then thread goes global.

Man up son.
