If the worst came to the worst and things escalated

I think at this point a nuclear exchange in our life times is inevitable ... sadly.

I'd probably be toast. I'm philosophical about it. But humanity as a whole will be largely unaffected. There will still be over a billion Chinese, over a billion Indians, and over a billion other Asians. South America will go on - that's another several hundred million. Etc. The short term will undoubtedly see many deaths but in the long term it will be a nothing. In the interim the Chinese are laughing their socks off.

No, No and NO.

Mutually Assured Destruction has keep nuclear conflict in check for the last 60+ years.

You think suddenly a major nuclear power is going to willingly destroy itself by launching a nuclear attack?

It doesn't matter 1 bit if there is "still over a billion chinese, over a billion indians or other asians" as the MAD Doctrine dictates all-out nuclear conflict, meaning those "over a billion chinese, indian or asian's" will be living in an irradiated wasteland.

Congratulations! You won .... The end of the world. Not exactly a great prize!.

You are assuming that Putin is rational.

No they won't. Significant radiation will be limited to Russia (mainly west of the Urals too), Europe, and North America. And short term to boot. You have only to look at Japan to see how short-lived the results of Hiroshima and Nagasaki were.

You do understand that the MAD doctrine that once the nukes start to fly, EVERYONE will throw them at EVERYONE ELSE, right?

This is not just a "Russia gets nuked and is radioactive". This is MUTUALLY ASSURED DESTRUCTION. Everyone gets to play and everyone gets to lose and live in a radioactive wasteland of a planet afterwards.

Putin's level of "rationality" is not so broken and warped that he would actually instigate a global nuclear war that would wipe out most complex life (either directly or indirectly due to radiation and food chain collapse after the fact).

Putin want's to "win", he want's to recapture both the territory and the "glory days" of the USSR. He knows full well you cannot achieve that by instigating a global nuclear conflict.

Also... your comments RE: The Atomic bombs used on Japan... They were TINY by comparison to a modern thermonuclear weapon, Attempting to use Japan as an example of how "the world can carry on after a MAD nuclear conflict" just demonstrates further how little you grasp the topic.

MAD was between the Soviet Union and the USA / NATO, with a spice of China. Russia, Europe, and the USA will likely get nuked. The rest of the world will sit it out. There's no need for China or India to fire off their nukes.

True MAD started as something between US / NATO and the USSR, however as more countries (some allied to those previously mentioned) also gained nuclear capabilities the "coverage" (for want of a better word) of MAD expanded to also include basically any and all nuclear capable nations.

If it had remained only between US / NATO and the USSR, what is it that has kept so many nations at bay from using their nuclear arsenal(s) after they developed the capability?

I'm talking nation states like Iran, or North Korea etc... If they perceived MAD as something only between US/Nato and USSR/Russia I can't help but imagine they would have used nuclear weapons already.

*Edit* To be clear :- I'm not saying MAD is the only thing that has prevented more recent nuclear powers from using their arsenal(s), but that it is no doubt a significant contributor and should not be seen as something that was only "between the US/Nato and USSR/Russia" :)

OP posts a load of nonsense and then never contributes. These Russian trolls really want us to believe that Russia will use nukes that we all know are rusty clankers these days

What they haven’t worked out is that a) more people than ever see through the crap they post and b) it deepens our resolve against the Russian regime

One cannot beat a good cold war in my opinion. We know who the enemy is and it motivates our spies and assassins to have a go. Loads of money goes to science and innovative means of mass destruction. We are undoubtedly the good guys.

Russia are probably saying the exact same thing, verbatim. And the Chinese.

Barring scientific miracles we're all going to die, if it's due to nuclear war then so be it.

Just let me know so I can have a farewell fap.
