IL-2 Sturmovik: Cliffs of Dover Anounnced with 128 player multiplayer

Well as long as it isn't required to be on the internet at all times ala Silent Hunter 5, that's OK in my book. But being UBI............

Nate

As much as I dislike Ubisoft's DRM policy at least they're decent enough to put the internet requirement in big bold letters on the box front.

Only one thing I dislike more than DRM is DRM that's not properly disclosed to the customer when they purchase a game.

Do you need constant internet connection or just to start the game?

Bllody hell, it finally shows up, terrible terrible name though. I hope this isn't the end of Oleg's dream of releasing different sims with the new engine.

Unknown at this point, but that box art suggests to me that an internet connection is required only for Activation, not playing.

Nate

Apparently Ubi are due to release patches to remove the need for a constant connection in current releases like AC2, so I doubt any future titles will need it.

Well hope so anyway.

Looks like some of Ubisoft's new games are now using Tages limited activations - Zeit2 is using them for example. It wouldn't surprise me if this game is too.

Unfortunately Tages is the worst of the limited activation systems - no revoke, and not very good tech support. I've seen people on the Steam forums given the runaround between Steam, the publisher and Tages when their games won't activate or run out of activations.

Ubisoft haven't abandoned their always online system, and their new variant - internet connection required at launch - isn't much better because it still prevents you from playing if your internet is down, or if you're on a laptop away from an internet connection.

Can anyone recommend a good joystick that allows twist for rudder?
Budget? New or second hand, force feedback or not? The microsoft force feedback 2 stick is still great, and you can get it second hand without spending much. Worth looking for one that hasn't had too much use. The saiteks are good value new, but no FFB.

Do you flight sim types ever use trackir? I am thinking about getting it for sims and arma 2 but would like some feedback
Yes, the game is fantastic with trackIR. It needs a bit of time to setup properly, otherwise it'll make you feel sick. Once setup it's amazing.

Urgh. Just found out about Ubisoft being the publisher and online-activation DRM being applied to the sim.

What a damned shame. The game/sim I've most been looking forward to for years and I won't be playing it. I feel sorry for Oleg, his hard work and the effort and attention to detail his team puts in are thoroughly undermined by the DRM.

(By the way, I'm not just one lost sale... I was going to buy multiple copies to reflect the value (to me) of the sim. Yes, I'm that sort of a nutjob. I might have used the spare copies to try to grow the market for flightsims a little bit by handing the copies out to friends)

Seriously? It would appear to be a one time online connection requirement to activate the game much as many many games have currently, what form of DRM would it need to have for you to consider purchasing it or do you really expect UBI to ship it with any form of DRM whatsoever?

It would be good if they copied the DCS:- Warthog model. 8 activations (10 or so deactivations) and if you run out, you still get one activation a month automatically.

I wonder... Oleg mentioned a few weeks back that it would be available on Steam upon release, maybe it'll just use Steamworks?

That'd be the best compromise. The only thing I don't like about Steam is not being able to sell the game on or transfer it to someone else. At least you can install/uninstall as much as you like without having to worry about losing activations.

Supposedly we're getting an official announcement from UBI sometime this week in regards to the sim.

Ok, we have an official release date of March :)

IL-2 Sturmovik: Cliffs of Dover takes place in 1940 during the pivotal aerial battle for the skies over Britain between the British, the German and the Italian air forces.

- A replica of the Pilot’s Notes on the Spitfire I Aeroplane, provided to RAF pilots during The Battle of Britain and reprinted from the RAF Museum original document
- An in-depth 150-page ring binder pilot instructions

Lmao... I'm quite sure cliffs of dover is a joke btw.... COD... get it?
Sadly not a joke.

Either that or Ubisoft have forced it on Oleg, wouldn't be suprised if he says "fo".
I would. I find the new name annoying, but it's no big deal. The game wasn't developed for free, so the publisher gets a say in these things. Who cares, it's out in a couple of months - fan blooming tastic.
