IL-2 Sturmovik: Cliffs of Dover Anounnced with 128 player multiplayer

The patch that hopefully should be out this week is a beta patch, so has to be downloaded and installed manually, not through steam.

I've started playing the old Il2:1946 again to get the feel back and prepare for this week's IL2:CLOD patch. I have not touched Il2 for about 6 months - been playing RoF. But now decided to try the 4.11 patch and the new AI - its really good fun, changed the game completely! Why cant Maddox Games reuse AI algorithms and put them into CLOD as well- 4.11's AI is superb:)

Just tried this for the first time. Mapping controls to my joystick was painless but otherwise Im at a loss where to start  The flight training seems utterly useless, since you're in autopilot most of the time and instructions about start up, engine management procedures etc are just barked at you too quickly in a hard to hear voice and hard to read text

I have a basic understanding of prop pitch, mixture, cooling etc but when I went into quick mission the engine bursts into flames almost immediately, even if I turn rev etc down wow this game is hardore.

Try these instead: http://forum.1cpublishing.eu/showthread.php?t=31202

The training stuff that shipped with it is utter garbage and not worth bothering with, plenty of youtube videos that will tell you how to get flying it though. I'd advise just picking one aircraft and learning (apologies if I'm teaching you how to suck eggs) how to take off and land, then learn how to use the CEM for it too.

Many thanks for the link. I'm pretty much a complete noob to these sorts of games but definitely see the appeal, just have to do some research, practice and try to get through the massively steep learning curve.

I'l stick with the Spitfire for now. Am I right in assuming not all aircraft have trim tabs for all flight surfaces, cant seem to trim ailerons on the Spitfire.

Absolutely correct, aileron trim was manually set on the ground.

I'd advise making sure you have turned off SSAO (you'd be lucky to see the difference), Anti-Epilepsy filter (funky colours otherwise) and in game AA (doesn't work, FXAA works using the latest beta Nvidia drivers) in the graphics settings too.

Beta patch is also imminent :D

Yeah I read about the epilepsy filter crippling performance before so turned it off from the start, I do have 2xAA though so will turn that off. It feels a tad jerky at times but runs fine overall. The patch does sound good, wholesale improvements it seems, I'l wait for it through Steam.

Is it normal with this game for the desktop to appear suddenly when switching to the menu from in flight? I'm getting that annoying Windows Aero popup too saying its running slowly even though it's not.

I could but I'm a closet cheap skate :)

It was fooling around in Birds Of Prey the other night that gave me the bug for IL2-COD again. I'm well aware they're miles apart in how they play, handle, etc... though.

I enjoyed IL2 so I might get it at the end of the month, unless it pops up on offer somewhere first.

I would also suggest to turn off the Complex Engine Management and Engine Overheat to begin with. Leave full damage modeling and flight physics on though. The things you need to practice the most is flying without stalling (easy really - do not do turns that are too sharp) and deflection shooting. Well and learning general tactics of how to dogfight.

Il2:CLOD is far from a full on procedure simulator - just to compare you can install FSX and AccuSim Spitfire addon to see just how little of Spit's systems are modeled in Il2:Cliffs.

Il2 is all about superb dogfights- in this regard its simulation is unparalleled and is HUUUGE fun. So concentrate on the important part of the game and leave all the CEM and even learning how to trim for later. Learn to shoot down and survive - this is where all the fun is;) Learning to win through managing engine etc will just be a cherry on top that will come later.

Yes pretty much, if you locate the launcher.exe in the main folder and right click on it you can disable visual themes which will turn aero off while it is running and avoid the popups. Hopefully this is something else that will be fixed with the updated graphics engine.
