IL-2 Sturmovik: Cliffs of Dover Anounnced with 128 player multiplayer

So where is this game right now?

I bought it on release and hardly ever played it, it was awful, i've been a massive IL-2 fan too. To be fair my old rig wasn't going to see it at its best, but my new one - 7850, 2500k, 8 gig ram should smash it right?

Just wondered if they's improved to any great extent what was the worst release I have ever seen

Your rig will be fine, with the same cpu and ram but a 6870 it runs quite well for me ignoring the occasional stutter. A patch is imminent which should fix a lot of issues, an alpha patch can be downloaded if you wish but I stayed clear of it.

Wrong choice imo, as installing the patch is a simple copy-paste job and removing it is as simple as making Steam check integrity of the game. Alpha patch + fix all but solved "Launcher.exe" CTDs, improved FMs, nearly doubled FPS, improved sounds. Plus many servers run it as well, so its great for online too.

New beta patch was put out last week and its the best one so far- stuttering is all but solved, much higher fps. Crucially for single player game, AI is now behaving in a realistic manner - no more red bull air race crazy rolls from bombers. Flight modelling has been improved as well.

All in all, the game works really well now.

From what I understand- yes, it is. I personally have not had a single "launcher.exe" CTD since installing the new beta patch. THe yellow forums are also (for once) near unanimous with praise. Official steam patch is not too far away, but why wait when beta installing/rolling back is easy and most servers already run it?

Decided to give the latest beta patch a go and there is a definite performance improvement. At low altitude with trees enabled I still get some stuttering but thats probably due to my 6870 lacking grunt.

When I was a lad, a game which made your rig "creak" was something to be loved.

Nowadays, if your rig cannot run it, the game is obviously bugged :(

But it is obviously bugged, just look at the fps degradation when you get dust kicked up from takeoff, it's ridiculous to even consider that it isn't bugged or very badly optimised.

Just found this picture of Spitfire Damage Model in IL2:CloD. Boy, it's a complex game! :)

Release Candidate beta, not steam. But its a simple install - unrar into main game directory. To uninstall patch, use Steam to verify game contents. Very easy:)
