9-12months in hardware is a massive timescale to be thinking about.

The hard drive is the slowest thing in my current machine so I'm just debating if the 64GB Crucial is worth the cash and I'll see a noticeable difference

You will notice the difference on Boot time and loading apps.

1700mbps sustained reads have been seen with 8 * 30GB vertex's and the LSI 9260. If you got two of them and software raided across the two you'd see approx 3000mbps with 12 * 120GB drives!!

Those drives are being stunted by the areca. Have you benched the 4K random numbers?
