Intel Core Ultra 9 285k 'Arrow Lake' Discussion/News ("15th gen") on LGA-1851

i can't that's why i don't buy high end. well not true. i could buy them but id rather keep the money.
i could buy two teslas.
same thing.

elon musk buys a gazillion h200's...

if i was laundering debt expansion thru assets vehicles, i might have a different m.o. been there done that. many ways of gaining satisfaction from shiny new things.

value is also perceived value.

Why wouldn't they? People expect longer life from their platforms, so they'll be selling less.
I don't like it, but it's hardly surprising. Not as if chipset costs have gone down either.

Depends how long 1851 will last, we're not talking AMD here with AM4 and now AM5 is lasting ages. LGA1700 lasted awhile so we'll see how long 1851 lasts before they decide to make it dead.

Be interesting to see how long LGA1700 lasts, though lacking PCI-e 5.0 support and other new tech goes against it. There are still rumours of new CPUs coming to the socket, including a quite potent one for gaming if it ever materialises.

If Intel came out with how long they'll support the socket would make the price of some of the boards more palatable.
All indications are that it's a one generation only chipset, since Meteor Lake was cancelled for desktop.

Maybe they'll make a +200mhz "refresh" but it won't be a new generation or new architecture.

It's lacking details at the moment though it doesnt help that Intel are being quiet about it though I replied to him earlier in this thread if its just a 14th/zen 5 refresh they may as well not bother.

Over the years esp with Intel the high end last CPU generation holds its value and makes it sometimes financially unviable to upgrade too anyway. Two example's was I ditched my 6600 setup as the 7700K was so expensive that a second hand 8700K was close to it in price and I ditched my 8700K setup spent an extra £30 and got a second hand 12600K and a z690 as the price for a 9900K was around £250-£270 second hand.

The Intel roadmap doesn't tend to suggest it will be a long term platform, their next CPU focus likely will require a new socket again, though they might do refresh(es).

8700k was a good chip at the time, released same year as first Zen and beat Zen + and Zen 2 when overclocked, at least in games anyway.

Not good enough. If Intel were releasing a chip maybe 20+% faster than AMD has then sure it probably would be worth it, but not given recent leaks of Arrow Lake.

Are you referring to Bartlett S? Cos i also have my eyes peeled for that one! 12 P cores sounds like a dream especially if they get power under control.

Hence why AMD plays on this and justifies the boards cost over X amount of years. Although in some cases their B series boards are just as good as their X series stuff at ridiculously lower prices.

Referring to those rumours but not sure it is actually Bartlett S - if the rumoured details on the 12P part is true it would be very good for CPU heavy games and is more "Meteor Lake+" architecture wise.

Exciting if true, is there any confirmation whether it would be 1700 or 1851 socket yet?

It would be LGA1700, but a bit of an odd move given it would likely overshadow the newer platform which makes me doubt Intel would do that but given their current financial situation they might look for wins where they can get them.

Maybe this would be the direct competitor to the 9800x3D, it would be something to at least match it.
