Intel Core Ultra 9 285k 'Arrow Lake' Discussion/News ("15th gen") on LGA-1851

Cores: 8 'Lion Cove' Performance cores, 32 'Skymont' Efficient cores (40 core total)
Process: TSMC 3nm & Intel 20A
Socket: LGA 1851
IO: 16x PCI Express 5.0 for dGPU and 4x PCI Express 5.0 for NVMe from CPU

Starting up a dedicated thread for the next generation Intel CPU on desktop. Intel Core Ultra (Arrow Lake) will be replacing 14th gen Raptor Lake refresh and is due to launch in 2024. This will be Intel's first mainstream desktop CPU using chipsets and using TSMC's 3nm node.
Looking back Intel should have called those 'Lion Cove' cores 'Pussy Cat' cores.

why do people care about efficiency? run gpuz and watch how many watts the gpu is pulling with different settings in games.

worrying about 50 watts or whatever.. the battle is literally in your mind.

worrying about efficiency but probably have about 50 watts of RGB lighting, where's the logic?
For me it's less about efficiency and more about how much heat is being generated in the summer months as I'm gaming next to the sun's core

aren't most motherboards dual bios still? so even if you brick it falls to the other chip.

the risk of bricking must be almost 0 anyway, I've never had an issue so far, even when doing the unthinkable and doing it from windows

My Z690 Gigabyte board is single BIOS only.
I'm aware of that, since feeling the need to flash the board due to Intels microcode changes. And going from AL to RL.

In the past, iirc, it was a DFI Lanparty Ultra that failed on a BIOS update. At least that had a socketted BIOS chip as I was able to buy another from a UK supplier, who flashed it for me. That worked and I used it to hot flash the failed update on the original chip, that also worked, so I had a spare.

True I guess, always undervolted my 12700k so it runs nice and cool., I don't think it's ever been over 65c

I don't think I could be bothered with ocing these days so any chips needing that to be "worth it" are a big NO from me. unless its a simple multiplier change and not worrying about volts.

Still passing on this though and waiting for 2026 I guess.

The cpu no one needs or wants, oddly intels stock price didn't fall with these turds so maybe the bottom is in.

low end Z boards are about £200, same as X870. Good connectivity. I can see 2 x4 and a x1 slot on the cheapest board along with the main x16.
No gen 5 m.2 lane sharing with the x16 slot.

Still no AVX512 though.

Stock price actually went up - Intel got out of paying their 2009 fine for dodgy business pratices. money talks?

I guess, didn';t they release some mobile chip recently, that's actually good though? and I guess that's a bigger market than desktop

There's Bulldozer levels of cope going on now
Except, wasn't Bulldozer at least cheap even at launch?
Not really, they're outlier games. If you check the other games in that review nothing changes relative to other reviews. It's like when X3D CPUs crush everything else by >40%, exceptions exist but the norm is still more subdued.
That twitter seems to be up there with UserBenchmark crazy "review" score: almost totally cherry picked!

better not be, otherwise im done with Intel , seems AMD is the way for now , im hopeing for a better cpu next year to slot into these new boards , 1 gen will be the nail in the coffin for Intel
I'm sure these are great for those who like to tinker - sorry "tune" - and that's fair enough (but would be better if the motherboard weren't so pricey), but unless you fall into that category then spending £1k seems excessive.

There might be a refresh on lga1851 just due to OEM demand to have something new but I hope Intel learned some lessons about clocking too high with RPL.

The enthusiast market is not going to move the stock price, we don't matter. Intel will continue to outsell AMD. On my work Dell premier account there is only 1 AMD desktop, a threadripper workstation.

Do you think the gaming inconsistancies are down to the CPU itself or various issues with drivers?

If it's the CPU, then I guess I won't be upgrading this year.
Likely it is the CPU, inherent to new tile design
Some outlier games could probably be improved with updates/APO. But mostly what you see is what you get

What if intel deliberately launch arrow lake at this for that's how they wanted it to make raptor lake look better and sold stock of what remains and then it will come out a fix who will fix arrow lake :)

Have to say these are really not looking good for Intel. Seems like they were rushed out early, perhaps because of the problems with 13th and 14th, and they're just not ready for use. Next generation will problem iron out the problems but I imagine it's going to be a couple of generations until they really start benefiting from the reworked architecture.

why do people care about efficiency? run gpuz and watch how many watts the gpu is pulling with different settings in games.

Why waste power and money for nothing? Why need to have larger, more complicated, noisier, cooling setups when you don't need them?

Lol, no. You'd need to coat the inside of your entire case in LEDs to get close to that.

I doubt they would do that, more bad news/reviews is not going to help them at this point, but arrow lake flying off the shelves might have. They're not bad CPUs really, they fix some of the biggest issues with 14th gen (dated platform and high power use) and app performance is fine. It is just gaming that they're a flop and even then, it is mostly fine.
