Intel Haswell Refresh Processors Codenamed Devil’s Canyon – Launching in Mid 2014 With Unlocked Desi

I cant even hear a word they are saying on that video, its all muffled, but im keeping my hopes up, at the end of the day, no one but Intel has a 4790k or the i5 counter-part, so no one, including Asus or Gigabyte engineers etc know......despite what they may say, again of course, they want to promote there new boards.

I just cant believe for one moment that they are replacing the 4770k with the 4790k and not making it availble to Z87 users, that means Z87 users will have no "K" chips available to them, rendering Z87 pretty much useless, like I said before, hell.......you can still buy K series chips for 1155 brand new from OCuk, yet they are going to leave a newer chipset (Z87) without any ?, I dont think so somehow.

Thats like intel saying, sorry guys for making you waste £350 on a new Z87 Gaming and Overclocking motherboard, but our new chips arnt going to work on your board, and the old chips wont be available to buy anymore, may as well throw your old boards away as no one is going to want a board they cant get a decent chip for !!! ther would be uproar.

You need a hearing aid if you can't understand that video.

They clearly say that Devil's Canyon is z97 only. Suck it up, time to upgrade or stop whining.

Time will tell and will not be 1st time a vendor has update a Mobo bios to let it do something Intel didn't want like OC on non OC models etc.

I think the motherboard vendors will not let this stay like that as their reputation will be ruined in the casual buyer's eyes. Devil's Canyon is a Haswell architecture chip on the same socket, there is no reason for limited compatibility with Z87. If block it permanently in some way, it would be their lowest move in the past several years.

Completely disagree, I think the motherboard vendors will see this as an excellent opportunity to increase sales.
Let's face it, if these chips are insanely awesome and do 5ghz oc without a problem you'll find all the people bitching and whining right now will end up buying the cpu and a new motherboard anyway.
Those that are currently saying they won't just on principle are just lying to themselves :D

I don't see why these won't be allowed to be placed in Z87 motherboards. The Z97 motherboards will still sell well and offer some nice new features. When Ivy came out, those CPUs were still able to be dropped in to Z68 motherboards. People still bought the Z77 motherboards though as they were just nicer and offered more.

According to Anandtech (Ian Cutress), even Broadwell (being on LGA1150) should still be able to be dropped straight into a Z87 board. It wouldn't make sense for Intel to demand a Z97 board for 4970Ks, creating a totally separate enthusiast tangent line. That is reserved for X99 as far as I undderstand.

I'm not lying to myself, I will wait for x99, Intel can stick z97 where the sun don't shine if the new chips don't work on z87.

As long as the 4970Ks work in Z87 boards, i'll be getting one, like others have mentioned i can't see why they wouldn't, it wouldn't make sense for intel to limit them to Z97 surely.

I agree, but as said above these new chips will only work on Z97 - apparently.Intel can do whatever they want, so we will end up in like it or lump it probably. I don't however see why with a bios update that these chips won't work in Z87 boards?????

They would work with a bios update, and so would broadwell if it stays 1150, but that's up to Intel.

It will all boil, (no pun intended) down to what type of paste and ihs assembly job theyve done. Quite often ive seen people who have delidded the current chips and used bog standard thermal paste ala mx4 etc, only to find temps the same. Unless Intel are using something like liquid pro/ultra.

Temperatures aren't helped by just how small the die is for the CPU these days, quite a bit of the die for Haswell onwards is for the GPU alone.

Latest bios for my boards mentions support for the news cpus, surely the 4790k is included in that?

If you look at the supported CPU list it says that the new bios brings in support for the 4790, 4790S and 4790T but doesn't mention the 4790K, so either they won't support it until a later BIOS or they won't support it at all.
