So going by the limited reviews we got so far everyone seems to be getting 4.7ghz. Im ok with that, personally I would have liked a 5ghz chip at a safe voltage. But looks unlikely, but then again 4.7ghz aint nothing to sniff at:)
 
See I wouldn't be satisfied at that, I want 5Ghz or bust.

As for my dead 4670K, I wouldn't have done it if I didn't have a back up.
 
I don't know if there would be any noticeable performance difference between games from having the cpu at 4.7 to 5.0. Its more of e-peen or sounds nice to have that magic 5Ghz. Ill give it a try as long as it doesn't exceed safe voltages.

I get that at stock settings on a Haswell 4770K, on air, no de-lidding. If you get a halfway decent overclock on Haswell, then DC's improvement is going to be small to none.

Certainly if you're going through an upgrade cycle now, then DC and Z97 is the one to go for, but it's nothing worth an upgrade from last year's product.

Yeah that's my initial attitude to it really. Given the marketing that's been spewed around. I want 5ghz achievable for me to upgrade, if not the 4670k till broadwell. :D

I'm intrigued by your backup plan stulid, rip that 4670k though was a gooden. :(
 
this looks to be the safest way to delid (note one edge on the pcb,other edge on the ihs)

This is what scares me about delidding. Would love to try it and mount the 4770K bare die, using a Naked Ivy kit or similar, but the thought of my hand slipping a few mm's and breaking a £250 cpu scare me! :eek:

Sorry to hear 'bout your attempt.

I am in 2 minds. 3 really.

1) Keep my 4700K and attempt to see what I can get out of her manually, or just be happy at 4.4Ghz auto.

2) Delid and aim for a pretty good 4.7+ clock.

3) Keep my 4790K preorder and sell this chip.

What if I end up with a worse chip though!!! Aaaaaargh!!! :D

If you have already pre ordered dude then stick with the 4970k. :p you will make up a fair bit selling off your 4770k I'm sure.

Only reason I'm thinking of staying with current haswell is I have a decent 4670k I think. I did a major upgrade from i7 2600 sandy system no oc, and this kills it stone cold. It's will easily last me till broadwell. Just gotta put some cream on my itchy fingers. :D
 
Trouble is if you delid you still can't shove tons of extra volts through as you'll simply degrade the chip?

If temps were the deciding factor then i'd happily delid now (i've got everything I need, even a naked Ivy mounting kit on its way) BUT after all that effort and risk, i'm already at 1.38v for 4.5GHz, any higher and I risk degrading the chip anyway. Temps aren't holding me back, the quality of my chip is.

I think you make a good point here mate. For others oohing and arrring whether to upgrade, the point of decision must lie with what is holding you back. If it is the chip, as in your case then upgrading might be a good step and the outlay seemingly justified.

I don't think I fall in that category ,though show me some decent 5ghz clocks and I might get hungry. :D

tbh if I had the spare cash i'd buy a 4790k at the hope of getting a better chip anyway because my 4770k is naff.

I'd then sell the 4770k and with it the thought of delidding, so hopefully not make too much of a loss.

Knowing my luck thought i'd get an even worse clocking 4790k :p

However I don't have the spare cash so although I was toying with the idea of delidding, I'm not so sure now purely because of how naff this chip is
