***Intel i7 4790K Owners thread***

My stock 4790k runs extremely hot during the small FFTs test in p95. Power jumps to around 150/160W and temps go over 90 :(

I'm using a noctua u14s cooler with just the one fan and I am pretty sure it is seated correctly. I have taken it off just to check the spread of the themal compound and everything seems fine there.

During standard gaming (dota2/watchdogs) it doesn't go above 65.

Am I missing something obvious here?

Try running Asus Realbench, I don't care what Prime gets too because nothing I do ever stresses my CPU like that so the test results are totally defunct.

I do hope your right. I would jump on X99 straight away if that was the case and use the 5820k while saving for a 5960X.

Going from a 4790k to a 5820k seems like a hell of a waste, these incremental upgrades are frustrating, nothing groundbreaking for a long time now.

Forget about P95 TEMPS, as long as its running ok during everyday use, gaming, etc.

Yes. Read the thread, particularly the overclocking guide/article I linked to near the start. It clearly explains why prime 95 is no longer a useful stability tester for Haswell.

I discovered this last year on AMD FX8 cores, providing you did not use prime for stability, I could achieve a stable 5GHz on 8 cores with AIDA64 albeit at temps slightly above recommended. It is purely temperature related and controlling temperature means higher clocks. Prime just puts too much heat in and 8 workers at 5GHz was too much. 4.9GHz on 4 workers was the highest frequency I could prime at. Or 8 workers at 4.5GHz.

Lads i was trying to sell my 4770k i never used right, But my mobo was Z87 UD4H (damm good mobo) and i was not fussed on swaping both and i cannot find out if it is 100% supported so i can overclock and everything.

I am getting confusing results on google telling me Intel changed it last minute to Z97 and Gigabyte have no mention of Devils Canyon in the bios updates. But cpu support list does list it since F9 so there would be no worries about slotting it in right?

As long as the BIOS is upto date prior to fitting the Devils Canyon it will be fine.

Thanks, Wazza told me this too which is a bit of a bummer. Kills the value of the 4770k a bit and at the price it is going to be £100 to move to 4790K. I am having real second thoughts about £100.

Very little in it and i do need a GFX card soon. What do you reckon lads sod it and go for 4.4 on the 4770k or pay the £100? I have the UD4H and AX860i and H100i for it.

Nope i have not touched my rig since i built it in Jan or so. I have been fed up i only just got myself a 120hz screen a week or so ago and now my eye is on finnishing it up with a GFX card and a nice cpu speed.

Im thinking Broadwell and keeping it now though to be honest. They nearly all do the same clocks it is just the temps you lads see a big difference?

Your board supports Devils Canyon (Haswell Refresh):

With no warranty due to the mod it will be worth less.

I thought so, but someone on here was saying, probably joking he would delid and sell to people who could't / darn't do it.

Do you know the average temp drop of a delided 4790K as I have looked everywhere I can find and not much info at all.

I'm trying to work out if it's worth doing it.

I would have said it depended on the seller, tbh.

If the chip itself works, then it's pretty darn unlikely that it'll stop working unless massively abused in future (i.e. through your own fault), so I'd be looking for the source to be a regular OCUK forum user with lots of posts and some visibility in the CPU section and MM. Such a seller will not want to ruin their rep and chances of future sales by selling a dud, and is therefore a pretty good bet :)

in Oct it will be 3 years since i changed my cpu and ive got the upgrade itch

currently running a 2700k @ 4.8Ghz 1.35v

should i even be reading this thread..
