***Intel i7 4790K Owners thread***

I put my clock down from 4.80 to 4.60 and haven't noticed any performance differences, At 4.80 it needed 1.35 but at 4.60 it only needs 1.28, Might see if I can lower the volts a little more and still be stable :)

New to the intel scene, got myself a 4790k and an SOC mobo, played around a little this weekend with the OC.

Got it stable in Prime95 and Aida64 at 4.5 with 1.3v - this morning however I got a "Boot Failure" in the BIOS screen.

Have reset everything, not sure what it could be.

Long shot but any ideas?

I started at 4.7 with 1.28v stable, then thought I would go 4.6 and ran stable at 1.22v, then decided to see what 4.5 would go stable at and currently running at 4.5 with 1.18v, totally stable, including prime for an hour.

I have noticed no difference between the PC performance between 4.7Ghz and 4.5Ghz, and in reality why would I (other than Benching)? Just a quieter experience when gaming at 4.5 etc...

I love OC'ing, but for day to day use for gaming, web etc., makes no real difference on a decent processor.

All I am after is a nice 4.5, like you I only use the PC for gaming and some Video Editing/Photoshop stuff.

Anything more than 4.5 for me is not needed, might have to have another little play after work.

Think the update I did on the Gigabyte "APP Centre" might have changed something. Running the latest F5 BIOS now.

My Alpenföhn Brocken 2 CPU Cooler is keeping my 4790k so cool! On load it's just 40C! I really need to try overclocking it, I bet I can get 4.8Ghz

40c load? What kind of load are we talking about?

Havent used my PC for 3 months the last time i was using it my 4790k it was at like 50c on non intensive games and 60c on the more intensive games, 75-80c on prime at stock and with a h100i. That was during the summer mind you but still, 40c load! thats great.

What did you use to load the cores ? 40'c load doesn't sound right outside of a good WC setup or if you live in a house made of coolers :p

I was doing some testing with my new 4790k yesterday and have subsequently disabled Turbo Boost (it was enabled by default) on my Z97X-UDH-BK. It was making my chip run extremely hot and increasing the volts to 1.3v but I'm only using the standard cooler :o

I'm thinking of getting a 4790K

I read briefly earlier in the thread that it seems to be important to check the batch code number to see if you have a later chip.

To save me reading through the whole thread, what batch number should you be looking out for, i presume its on a sticker on the box, could someone possibly post a quick pic of the batch number etc.

Is it better to get one as a late as poss, i think i read that intel had changed the thermal paste on later cpu's and maybe changed a couple of other things.

A decent list of batch numbers can be found here.

The number can be found on the label on the box, and on the heatspreader of the cpu too. Quite a lot of the first released chips were L3's, (indicating 2013 year of manufacture). Newer ones are L4, ive owned one of each and tbh clocking wise they were pretty similair. The power delivery was improved but theese are still hot chips under certain stress programs. The two DC's ive owned actually run quite a bit warmer than the 4770k i had, basically they use the same paste as before.

They do run hot just like the 4770k . The improvement is that you can run them at higher frequency for the same volts. My DC will do 49core 48 Cache at 1.275v where has my old 4770k would only do 4.6/4.6 @ 1.35v

When you say they run hot, is that hot when being overclocked ? What about under normal loads as i thought Haswell ran cooler than Ivy ?

They only run extremely hot under certain synthetic stress test programs that utilise AVX instruction sets, examples being prime 95, intel burn test. This is at stock as i found with my two DC examples. For gaming my max core temp can range from 60-74c depending on ambient. Running at 4.7ghz on 1.300 vcore. Ivybridge had the same issue due to being pasted as opposed to soldered, but the addition of a vrm strip on hw compounds the heat issue. Therefore they run a bit hotter than ivy.

Setter, how do you rate the 4790K ?

I took the plunge and got the 4790K from OCUK, hopefully should have it in at the weekend, i'm coming from an i5 3570K.

Im pleased enough with it, this second one is a slightly better clocker than the first one i had. As long as you avoid using the type of programs i mentioned above, it will run cool enough. For stress testing i used asus real bench on 5 runs then gaming, (my primary use of the system). It's been rock solid for a few months now.
