Intel to launch 6 core Coffee Lake-S CPUs & Z370 chipset 5 October 2017

So your GPU is currently bottle-necking your performance, not your CPU.

A wise man would spend the money on a very fast graphics card, and then buy the CPU/Board/RAM combo next year after the next Nvidia release cycle is completed, that will net you a far great number of FPS. Should you then want to upgrade the graphics card, you will have lost very little in monetary terms, selling it on and then also benefit from the newest Intel/AMD technology, and in Intel's case, a socket/chipset that might last longer than 14 seconds.

Obviously, there's no need to take any notice of what I am saying, but £350 + £130, then another £130, only to see 3-5% gains would just seem like a waste to me (personally), not forgetting that your 980Ti still holds good value presently, fetching circa £300 on auction sites, where as by next year it'll become the equivalent of the GTX 1160 (or whatever) and be worth £120 at best.

Either way, I am sure you'll have fun with your upgrade. :)

A good idea but the 980ti is being bottlenecked in BF1, which is the main game I play. It runs at between 60% - 90 usage with some horrendous frame drops if the computer tries to do anything in the background. A more powerful GPU would give little benefit.

If that's the case then, I don't see the Intel option being any better than the AMD Ryzen kit you've ordered already as it will have as good, if not better minimums in BF1. You'll be loving the extra cores for background activity also, so much nice and smoother. :)

I've spent all day looking at benchmarks, probably not the smartest of ideas, and the Intel stuff does have slightly better performance. But I suppose figuratively speaking it is better to be looking forward to see how you gain on them with each new title rather than looking over your shoulder to see if they have caught you yet. :)

looks like I'm going with AMD next month, not waiting until fall...

Well at the very least, that box confirms what we were already more or less certain of anyway - "Requires Intel 300 Series chipset-based motherboard". I won't be in a rush to buy another motherboard, so it's looking like I'll skip this and wait for the next-gen Ryzen to appear. I knew it would be the case anyway but I'm still done with the pointless motherboard change requirements. I'm on a 7700K running happily at 5GHz anyway so it's not like I'm desperate for a change yet :)

£190 1600 would by my choice over the 8700k, nice saving of £170.

Another good reason not to wait, although think I would get some of that difference back through cheaper memory, making it more like £100 more.

I really would like to wait and see but I'm not going to be able to tolerate this 955BE rig much longer :D

but then you take into account you need an aftermarket cooler for the intel chip and a much more expensive motherboard and its going to be £200+ more than a 1600

you could most likely get a 1600 system plus an upgrade to zen+/2 for cheaper than a 8700k system
