Intel to launch 6 core Coffee Lake-S CPUs & Z370 chipset 5 October 2017

Saw that, that Dell is great Wow...cheesy fest lol. I can't see any tech info, releases or prices coming. Did they say this last 15mins only?

Brian still scanning that foggy beach!

So the Z270 chipset is a dead socket within around 9 months of release? What an absolute stab in the back for current Intel users.

Intel could have at least let people who invested in Z270 be able to let them switch to Coffee Lake CPU's, but hey nothing new there.

How did you expect intel to power 6cores off a 4core socket? Would have never have worked. Well it might but would bottleneck the cpu so hard.

All planned in Intels grand scheme of things to kill off the socket and make people buy new chipsets. At least with AMD AM4 it will last for around 4 years.

Even X299 / i7-7800X looks a joke now, how long has that been out? A few months, lol.

Doesn't it have almost the same tdp as the 7700k 91watt vs 95 watt?

They would have sold more if they allowed Z270 compatability but if you lot are willing to pay for it then I'm sure they will happily sell you it.

So 3 months less than normal, wow big deal.
I thought this was a forum for enthusiasts who are clued up!
Intel usually keeps a socket for 2 generations which means 2 chipsets over roughly 2 years.
With the 200 series being the second chipset for the socket it was always only going to last a year at most.
I say at most because KabyLake is the 3rd generation at 14nm so more of a stop gap so it's more akin to Broadwell on the desktop so not a platform to buy if you want 2 years of support.
This is all common information that anyone clued up could deduce but still the outrage of the ignorant continues.

You sound abit grumpy. Just because Intel have been doing this for years, doesn't mean they have to. I think their should be more choice, why should the end user have to keep upgrading chipsets when the motherboards are more than likely capable of powering their CPU's.

Like I said with AMD AM4 it's going to be around for 4 years, even so probally new motherboards will be released if the CPU's are desirable, but at least the end user has a choice.

It doesn't matter to those not buying in the first place it's more of a slap in the face of the people that have brought say a 7700k that would love to take advantage of the extra 2 cores and 4 threads with out having to buy yet another motherboard as well. Does anyone actually know if their is a valid reason for needing a new chipset? It's still using ddr4, it's still using pci gen 3, what does the 370 provide that the 270 didn't?

That being said if your upgrading from say a 2500k then it doesn't matter at all but the lack of an upgrade path is a bit of a bummer.

With little competition until very recently intel followed a similar path to apple, minor incremental increases , premium pricing and frequent planned end of life for products.

As long as their sales and margins remain they have no reason to change.

Some of you need to check the AT forums thread - apparently Intel releasing MOAR cores now,and rushing the X299 launch(and bringing forward the Coffeelake launch) has nothing to do with Ryzen. Apparently its all sheer coincidence, especially when Ryzen was actually meant to be released late last year and the design and core counts would have already been finalised for the basic chip in 2015(IMHO OFC).
Well, after all the big hype on the AT forums about SkyLake++ (ah sorry, KabyLake+ (no, sorry CoffeeLake)) 6C/12T being the second coming making Ryzen irrelevant, it seems the glorious day is actually not now, but rather real soonTM (that is October at the earliest).
Like the thermals and power requirements of Skylake-X I expect it to be sweepered under the carpet though.

So remember these contradictionary truths:
  1. no mainstream user or gamer needs more than 4 cores (the gospel from now until October*)
  2. the i7-8700K with its 6C/12T is the best gaming CPU (the gospel from October* onwards)
*October is a placeholder as Intel actually said 'fall'.

That's the thing though isn't it DarkHorizon472, the margins and sales have already changed significantly over the last few months.
If you remember "Adored's" video he explained why Intel is having to "raid" the server cpu output to make them available for desktop. Add that to the fact that they are loosing market share in the profitable end of "server and enterprise" they are now in a hole that can only get deeper.
At some point, and it could be sooner rather than latter....................the roles could be completely reversed.

You will find in this very discussion, many wrote that the Z270 is dead socket since February when it came out. But anyone wrote so, was vilified and ridiculed as a lunatic Inte-hater heretic by some in here.
But that's what Intel has said since Feb. Nothing new. Also Z370 CPUs ain't going to be compatible with Z390 CPUs later in 2018. (Cannonlake)
So new motherboards will be required in 10 months time, if not less.

Imho anyone who wants Intel platform for the long term, should be looking at the X299.
And the reason SkylakeX doesn't perform better than the Ring topology CPUs (SKylake, Kabylake, KabylakeX, Broadwel-E) is down to ram speeds used on the "benchmarks" by the "review sites".

Is bit less sensitive to it compared to AMD Zen but it is dependant to the ram speed for the Mesh, never the less. If you see benchmarks with Ram speed over 4000mhz (can do 4133) compared to those with 2666 (usually every benchmark out atm), shall see difference.

Similarly to the AMD Zen 2666 vs 3466 ram (around 20% more perf).

So my question is... building a new itx gaming build (not putchased mobo yet) will be sat along side a 1080ti what xou do i get? I dont want to wait until oct/nov thats for sure i want to get it this weekend. I had my hopes up for a 6c i5. Budget of 250ish can go higher but really dont want too.

Do i go intel ? If so what one or do i go ryzen and if so what one?

This has all thrown a spanner in the works.

Why cant they launch them now haha
