Intel to launch 6 core Coffee Lake-S CPUs & Z370 chipset 5 October 2017

^ Is that £250 for CPU, board and DDR4? If so, you'd be extremely hard pressed to beat your current setup. The only genuine upgrades currently available are Ryzen 7, X299 and arguably Ryzen 5 depending on workload.

So my question is... building a new itx gaming build (not putchased mobo yet) will be sat along side a 1080ti what xou do i get? I dont want to wait until oct/nov thats for sure i want to get it this weekend. I had my hopes up for a 6c i5. Budget of 250ish can go higher but really dont want too.

Do i go intel ? If so what one or do i go ryzen and if so what one?

This has all thrown a spanner in the works.

Why cant they launch them now haha

To be frank, if it's ITX you are knackered in both directions.

Just because Intel have been doing this for years, doesn't mean they have to. Why should the end user have to keep upgrading chipsets when the motherboards are more than likely capable of powering their CPU's.

A small minority of systems get upgraded, probably less than 10%, so it’s correct in my view that manufacturers optimize a new platform for the 90% that don’t not the 10% that do. Why compromise a new platform in some way to serve the <10% of older systems that will upgrade? That’s illogical.
Intel have 2 main design teams and they aren’t handicapped by having to worry too much about compatibility with the other team’s design. That’s why you will get VRMs on die with one design and then removed later etc which impacts board compatibility.
As well as that, a lot of the focus is on mobile so the power delivery characteristics for example of the desktop chips might be affected by what’s best for mobile where there’s no concern for socket compatibility.
Add all that together and even though it’s annoying at times I think it’s the right call when you consider everyone and not just selfishly think of one’s own needs.

With AMD AM4 it's going to be around for 4 years, even so probally new motherboards will be released if the CPU's are desirable, but at least the end user has a choice.

I read that the official line is that AM4 will support the Zen refresh and then the first generation at <10nm which is 3 generations in total. Whether that takes 3 or 4 years is not the point. But they may support beyond that knowing AMD but it’s a guess at this stage.
In other words you get one extra platform but we have no way of knowing at this stage whether 3 AMD platforms will offer a bigger jump than Intel’s 2.
Over the last decade hardly anyone cared about AMD’s longer socket support because the platforms were rubbish and the gaps between them long.
Hopefully that is in the past but it’s still a punt.

With PCIe 4.0 due in the 4 year period you referred to that kills the current AM4 motherboards if you want to take advantage of that for example.
In other words, it’s not just about the CPU but also about platform features.

Maybe start looking for used 6 core Haswell-E/Broadwel-E?
Those the I5-8600K going to be around £250 (£206 + VAT according to the leaked prices). SO you will have to add another £200 for mobo.

How so?

£250 is for cpu alone

Hmm, consider that R7 1700 goes for 270 these days. You either buy the 8700K or Ryzen.
Anything bellow 8700K ain't worth.

You sound abit grumpy. Just because Intel have been doing this for years, doesn't mean they have to. I think their should be more choice, why should the end user have to keep upgrading chipsets when the motherboards are more than likely capable of powering their CPU's.

Buy AMD then, I'm more than happy to keep the same CPU/Mobo for 5 years, seems like you are too with a 2500k, no idea why it bothers you!

I
Because ITX for AM4 are an arm and a leg and not much choice. Intel are much the same if it's for gaming.................after all you did say it was a gaming rig. What's your total budget then ?
i dont mind dishing out a couple of hundred on a mobo too. Size really is key on this build. The biggest case i could use was the node 202 so i have to work with that.

Im just so confused what route to take

Well, if the route was to be AM4 you could do a lot worse than the Asrock AB350M HDV Micro ATX @ about £64. Tag that with a 1600 or 1700 and you is good to go.

I dont know why but somthing is still telling me to go 7600k as its going to perform better in games

Plus boards and memory are cheaper. I have yet to see any games perform better with ryzen

Max/avg are lower or equal depending on GPU but minimums and frametimes are better in newer engines. I imagine it will be the same with the 8700k. Dont get a 4 core CPU now.

you have WQHD 2560 x 1440 monitor. Pointless to get 7600K.

Ignore what everyone else is telling you and buy a 7600K, and a Z270 board, honestly you've earned it, and deserve it! ;)

Pff quad core. The 7600k just got wasted by the R5 1600 in a recent digital foundry review. Unless you are eye balling fraps 24/7 you ain't gonna see the difference between zen and any Intel. Bigger things in life to worry about than a few fps lol.

Yeah.

At 2560x1440 or higher, even a GTX1080ti makes all CPUs equal within 2-3 frames.

Fair enough will go ryzen then. The "X" models i assume are just pre overclocked? Or do they hit that clock on stock non x voltages? Heat is my enemy in this build so if the "x" boosts to 4ghz on the same bolta a non x does its a winner for me. I assume im better of with a ryzen 5 over 7 due to higher clock speeds and still having 6c/12t?

The X = XFR. A 2 core boost. But if you overclock them, they lost it.
What you need to make sure you buy good compatible ram running 3200C14 or 3466C14. The fps improvement over slower ram is huge. (40% between 2133 and 3466)

Intersting cheers for the tip. So the question is x or no x? Realistically im going to be using a low profile cooler with a trp of 95w the c7 cryorig is about the best i can fit in the case so is overclocking even going to be on the cards
