The messages I've sent are generally along the lines of: saying I read their profile and thought they looked interesting, picking out 2 things in their profile - make a funny statement about one and ask about the other, and then end the message with a signing off.

I might be overly picky, but saying you read their profile and found it interesting is kind of obvious otherwise you would not be sending the message in the first place.

Cheers. I'm not really worried about it though, it's no big deal if I don't. Life is like ice cream, woman are only the sprinkles on top.

Some things I noticed though:-

I'm 5'7". I'm short, no biggy. On match though the vast majority of woman state they're searching for someone taller than me, even those several inches shorter than me. It feels like it's more of a deal breaker online than in person because I didn't think most woman cared that I was shorter than other guys when I was still 3" taller than them.

I selected a few extra pounds. I'm working on that, but its currently true and I wanted to be honest. I look at a woman who selects a few extra pounds and they're typically the aforementioned whales. I look at the "average woman" and they range from decent bodies to what I'd call quite fat (as in probably heavier than me, for a start).

I typed a decent length profile. The majority of woman don't seem to put any effort in and I figure my essay itself might be a turn off. That or I really am just too fugly. Meh, I'll probably give it to the end of the month and delete my profiles, but I figured I'd do the nice thing and let others know they're not alone in getting ignored.

I'm fairly tall but I don't state anything on my profile about finding someone taller even though that's what I'd want. I used to be quite negative and picky on my profile but realised I was scaring guys away so I now keep my profile positive and non-picky

I've put my weight/body type as average as I wouldn't quite class myself as skinny or fit. But it seems a lot of whales also put their body type as average

why the rollyeyes? lets be honest, if you are on a dating site you will reply to people that you think look attractive in pictures(a lot of chicks don't look half as good when you meet them)

Considering you both catch the same train to work I doubt she'd think of you as a creep. What would she expect you to do, get the space shuttle to work instead?! Introduce yourself, break some ice (I know a shop that sells pocket coolers ) and go from there.

BTW "Hi, how are you?" is not putting effort in and does not stand out. Even I don't reply to woman who writes a simple "Hi" or "How are you?", if they are good looking then I will say "I see you just looked at the pictures, as there is plenty to write about in my profile "

Noticed that a lot in their mid 20s+ have at the end of their profiles a line stating not to message them if you're just going to send a few words and not put effort in. Fair enough, nobody wants to talk to someone who can't be arsed to write a first message properly and agreed, it doesn't have to be an essay but something interesting/different.

This online stuff is still new to me but less than 2 weeks in and a few things have happened. This week I've had 3 first messages, a local fogbeast who just wrote "hey there cx" at 2am one morning , a woman who just said I have amazing eyes and currently have an ongoing conversation with a rather down to earth and intelligent girl who appears to be able to hold a conversation well and have a joke at the same time. She's more interested in friendship first to see how things go but she's not really the type I go for so am not giving any false expectations. I just enjoy a good conversation with people who are like minded from time to time.
Another girl who is closer to me replied to a 1st message from me this afternoon, more my type, interested in photography (Woo!) and likes to travel...a lot! I'm so going to talk aperture blades and focal ranges.......I kid

I've also seen the truly hideous and hilarious. What's with girls taking pictures of their cats and/or dogs? Some even dress up as cats in furry costume.... and then wave after wave of duckface. Others have pics that look like they were taken with a potato and I've also seen profile descriptions that simply say "ask me" while others who write out a shopping list of what you should and should not have if you want to message them... The worst offenders seem to be where the description contains stuff like "if you can handle me" and other forms of arrogance.

You can get a feel for who is actually a decent human being and worth the time even if it's just for a good old chat but the ratio of them in every 100 isn't very high at all it seems. I don't know, maybe I see things differently, these days I'm more at home speaking with people I'm interested in face to face over tea and possibly some kind of biscuit goodness.

No wonder people always have negative feels for these sites.

Imagine if it worked out.. you know she might be sitting there thinkimg the same.. worst case senario you would just chat with her as a random stranger on the train, never really had any bad thoughts about anyone who chatted me up on train/bus/street
