how do you guys start your first messages off?

i go with a standard:
"Hey :) how are you? (make a comment on their profile to show ive read it and tell them i liked their profile) x"

i cant be bothered with writing essays, i know i get maybe 1/20 messages returned so theres no point wasting time on it! if i reallllyyyy like a girls profile, ill put in a bit more effort into my message.

The standard is supposed to be:

> Show you've read profile.
> Show you're funny.
> Ask a question.

Girls are apparently daft, so if you don't give them something specifically to say back to you, they don't respond.

yeah, if for example the say what their intentions are, ill comment on it and say if i have similar intentions, or if they talk about their music etc...

girls are daft.....would have never thought that! :p

"hey <inset cheesy joke>, ask a question about something interesting in their profile, maybe ask another sightly entertaining/inane question>"

No x, no generic how are you stuff, resist at all costs to ask a) why they are online dating or b) how online dating is going.

About 1/10 replies and the majority of those reply tend to make it past 2-3 messages. It's easy to put a basic amount of effort into the first message to get the charm through the door, its sustaining the interestingness till you can get a date organised is the real challenge :p (also targeting girls that aren't moronic helps a bit with reply rates)

Remember by default on pof the inbox is emptied after 28 days of the message chat being inactive so if the opening message doesn't work/get across the charm the first time, come back in 5-6 weeks with a better opener to see if you can get a better grab of attention!

Going by this thread, 10% is far better than most on here seem to get :D

think im going to try putting my effort into my messages, ive been doing the shot gun tactic last week and was fun, but didn't get me very far, might take longer to do the messages, but i normally send messages while i watch tv so doesn't matter how long they take to type really.
 
You know what really sucks? When you randomly add your ex on Facebook and she's totally hot and it was your fault you split. FML.
 
I know but I was just browsing though people I used to know and saw quite a rack in her profile picture so wanted to go deeper.

Indeed but I think the numbers are pretty immaterial. You want a date with one normal person who likes you as you are, not 10 with those who'll respond to an act. Unless you're just after sex, then act it is.
 
Well I must have done something right when I met someone on Friday as she asked if I want to meet up again tomorrow evening! :D
 
i got another message back yday, her message back was bit short though, felt as though she only replied to be polite....
anyway, ill still try to sell myself haha, although her pictures dont really show off her face (hair covering, hats etc....)
 
Things are picking up now, I've got 6 girls that are very interested and keen on the go, I'm going to try and arrange to see them all over the next 10 days.

EDIT: 2 dates confirmed so far.

Don't take it to heart, happens a lot as you have no idea what she's doing on the relationship front.

You get some right fruit cakes, ones who message a long and interesting message then don't respond after one message back..

Careful how many you juggle, it becomes hard work remembering what you asked them....I found it easier labelling them by number hah
