iOS 5.1 discussion

Hi,

if you upgrade to 5.1 iOS watch out as there is a new setting for Match to use cellular data, it is switched on by default, I managed to use 70MB in 30 mins.

Settings > Music > Use Cellular data, change that to off.

Cheers.

That's been there before 5.1

Well, this iOs update bricked my 4s. I've tried updating it from my desktop and laptop, with new versions of itunes and fresh downloads of the upgrade and phone in recovery mode. Every time it gets to 'verifying firmware' stage before returning an "unknown error (1)". Now the phone is stuck in recovery.

Well, Apple Store replaced the iPhone over the weekend - thankfully not charging me anything. Apparently it was the first one the bloke at the shop had seen broken by the OS update - but he also said that there's always some every time. Not too impressed with the fabled technical support though - 4 day wait for an appointment (during which the 'genius' was trying to fix 4 things at once and keeping everyone waiting over an hour each while he ran about...) and what seemed to be incorrect information passed over the phone from their support.

5.1 has already been jailbroken, but tethered, although tethered jailbreaks are pretty pointless, they are a step in the right direction. Whats the point of releasing 5.1 when the iPad 3 comes with iOS6? or at least it was demo'd with iOS6.

UNLIMITED DATA F.T.W!

AirPlay mirroring between an iPad 2 and ATV2 seems to work far better with iOS 5.1. It's smoother and almost without delay. Still not 100% perfect though but it's good to see such a noticeable improvement.

I will be especially interested in whether or not this fixes the battery issues some people are experiencing :)

Hasn't done for me, with decent usage, from a 100% charge at 7am, it is at 10% or lower by 4 or 5pm...

Thats pants. I'm still on 5.01 as i'm jailbroken but the only way i've found to make my battery last is to turn off 3G and Data. When i do this it lasts MUCH longer, i mean days longer

4S
76%
Usage 2h 9 min
Standby 5h 30 min

But that defeats the point of a smart phone in my book. Never turn BT, Wifi or 3G off at all.

Yeah my thoughts exactly.

Mine is doing average, getting around 4 hours usage with 22 hours stand by.

The battery meter is shocking on this though, and yes i've calibrated it etc.

Drops silly fast when in use but in stand by literally does nothing.

5.1 so far ok-ish for me.

- Battery life is marginally better, but it looks like more than any real changes, they just tweaked the indicator - before the phone was really fast to drop from 100, and last 5% would last for hours. This time the initial drop from 100% takes forever, but the numbers go down quicker below 20%. The final result is the same for me with slight improvement - phone lasts about 2 days when in the same house/area, with moderate use and no gaming.
- Battery wise - the infamous "snitch connection" to push.apple servers still doesn't jump from 2G/3G connection to Wifi, when Wifi is established, which means 3G radio never properly sleeps. It also reverts back for polling to 3G when phone sleeps, you can see it for a second when you wake up your phone, it shows 3G icon, then re-enables wifi. It should be the other way round - turn off 3G and let wifi wake up when phone polls in sleep mode. Wifi eats less battery. And I can't think of a single scenario where switching on wifi shouldn't = automatic switch off mobile data over 2G/3G. This phone could go on for 5-7 days in 2G mode without charging if it wasn't for this stupid thing.
- GPS drops out more often than before. Takes longer to pick up signal after tunnels as well. Let's blame it on sun spots for the time being.
- Jury is out on this one (could be in need of reset), but mast jumping seems to be not working properly. Since upgrade when I move around (cycle, drive) my phone tends to drop connections during active calls approx once every two hours, bars disappear and I get "searching" in task bar just for it to return to 5 bars few seconds later.
- Looks like pin lock is useless now, one can open camera from home screen, and then move to browse gallery/camera roll with all the options without unlocking?

My 4S battery life has just got a lot worse.

I also coincidentally moved to sky broadband and I'm reading that there might be some issues with UPnP on that so I'm going to try and switch it off tonight and see what difference it makes.

I've gone from losing about 5% overnight to losing 30% with wifi on.

Nope, opening the camera from the lock screen with a passcode starts a new "session" every time. So when you do that, there is nothing in the "camera roll" apart from the pictures you take at the same time. You cannot view anything further back without entering the PIN code to unlock the phone. Similarly, if you take a few pictures on the lock screen, then swipe the camera back down to the lock screen, those photo's become part of the true camera roll, and will not be available the next time you reopen the camera from the lock screen.

Mine was pushed to my ip4 this morning, wasnt sure if i should do it via the phone or via itunes so took a chance and did it via the phone. Everything went well, phone rebooted and all is well.

Do like the camera option on the lockscreen, at least i dont have to keep unlocking the phone to use the camera.
